To be loved is to love with all my heart

to be loved is to love with all my heart

I love God.

Easy to say. Hard to understand.

What does loving God look like when we can’t see Him or touch Him? When we question His voice and doubt our circumstances? How do imperfect people love a perfect God?

Jesus said the greatest commandment is:

‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.” Mark 12:29–30

What does that mean? ALL your heart, soul, mind, and strength. How are you and I supposed to live out all-consuming love for God?

Loving God with All My:

Heart – Loving God with all my heart means making Him my greatest treasure. Valuing my relationship with Him, with Jesus, more than anything else in my life.

Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matthew 6:21

Soul – Your soul is who you are. My soul is who I am. It’s the part of us that lives forever. Loving God with all my soul means loving Him with all I am.

Your soul is what integrates, what connects, what binds together your will, then your mind (those thoughts, feelings, and desires going on all the time), and then your body (with all of its appetites, habits, and behavior). ~John Ortberg, Soul Keeping

to be loved is to love with all my heart

Mind – Loving God with reason and intellect. Having faith does not mean giving up knowledge and understanding. Loving God with all my mind includes study and thought that will grow my faith and bless my relationship with Him.

Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart. Colossians 4:2

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Isaiah 26:3

Since you have heard about Jesus and have learned the truth that comes from Him . . . let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Ephesians 4:21 & 23

Strength – Strength is love in action. Loving God by what you and I do and say. It is honoring Him with our abilities, our resources, and our actions.

And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Philemon 1:6

That’s what it looks like, but wow . . . I don’t know about you but I’m humbled by how far I fall short of the “all” part.

I need a list of things to do intentionally to put life in my love.
