They will become festivals of joy and celebration for the people of Judah. So love truth and peace. “This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: People from nations and cities around the world will travel to Jerusalem. The people of one city will say to the people of another, ‘Come with us to Jerusalem to ask the Lord to bless us. Let’s worship the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. I’m determined to go. Bestow gifts to bless others every day. | Source What is a Blessing?
The Random House Webster’s College Dictionary’s definition of blessing includes:
- the act or words of a person who blesses.
- a special favor, mercy, or benefit
- a favor or gift bestowed by God, thereby bringing happiness.
- the invoking of God’s favor upon a person.
- approval or good wishes.
We gladly welcome these kinds of blessings and favor in our lives. God freely gives us all things and as his children we have his divine favor. We are blessed to bless others. So from our words and actions should flow blessings that encourage, build up, and value others.
In this hub, we focus on seven areas of blessing and how we can pass on these blessings to others to ignite sparks love and goodness. The world needs this kind of light to shine in the darkness.
Give the Greatest Gift of Love
Loving others is the greatest of all blessings that we can ever give them. Out of our hearts of love will then flow specific practical blessings. We must understand that this love flows from the love that God extends to us and is poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5).
This kind of love is more than natural love, it is love that comes from God. Only the God kind of love can enable us to bear, believe, hope, and endure all things (1 Corinthians 13:7). Even if we do great things for others, if the things we do are not anchored in love, we gain nothing (1 Corinthians 13:3, NIV).
Discovering the blessings can go far beyond our homes and families and can be a framework to extend unconditional love and acceptance in our wider circles of influence. Whatever your vocation, as you bless others in words and actions, relationships are enriched and people’s lives are changed.
Focus Verses: [Love) does not rejoice at wrong doing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things (1 Corinthians 13: 6-7, ESV).
Prayer: “Heavenly Father, today, I stir up the gift of your love that is in me. As your love flows in my heart, I choose to bless others in practical ways through my words and deeds. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”
Gary Smalley & Dr. John Trent Giving the Gift of Unconditional Love and AceptanceThe Blessing: Giving the Gift of Unconditional Love and Acceptance
Gary Smalley and John Trent, PhD, explore the biblical concept of the blessing in terms of unconditional love and acceptance. In this book, they explain, “this blessing has been an important part of providing a sense of acceptance for generations of children.”
After reading this book some years ago, I got a deeper sense of the need for parental acceptance and unconditional love. As the authors point out, understanding the family blessing can serve as protection for our children when they find love and acceptance at home, instead of searching for it in unlikely places
Abound in Every Good Work
God generously blesses us so that we can bless others. As we sow seeds in other people’s lives we are further blessed. In Acts 20:35, we are told that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
There is a divine law of sowing and reaping that is at work, and we need to ensure that we don’t lose out because we fall prey to a stingy spirit. We don’t have to wait to have abundance before we can share with others.
Since everything we have, we receive from our loving heavenly Father, let us cultivate an abundance mindset; freely we receive and freely we give. We need to start right where we are to develop a generous hearts. This includes, but not limited to, seeking to help others take care of their materials needs. As we do, God generously supplies all we need from his rich resources.
Focus Verse: “And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others” (2 Corinthians 9:8, NLT).
Prayer: “Heavenly Father, I thank you that you generously supply my needs so that I can bless others. Give me a generous heart, Father, and a trust in you that my needs are well taken care of. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”

Look After the Others’ Interests
We all have hopes and aspirations for our lives, and we set goals to achieve them. But as we strive to reach these goals that we set ourselves, we must not forget the needs of others, especially those in the body of Christ.
We are a part of one body and what affects one affects all of us. This means that our interests should not solely focus on the things that concern us. But we must expand our horizons and embrace others.
Our concerns are not as “busy bodies,” but genuine interests that flow out of a heart of love that aims to help people in our family, church and workplace. We ask ourselves, “What can we do to make positive differences in the lives of others?” How can can we help them to achieve their God-given purpose?
Focus Verse: “Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too” (Philippians 2:4, NLT).
Prayer: “Heavenly Father, help me to honor those who you place in my life, to look out for their interests and commit to make a difference in their lives. I can do all these things because Christ strengthens me. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”
The Blessing WorkbookThe Blessing Workbook: Your 5-Step, Interactive Plan for Finding and Sharing Genuine Acceptance
Dr John Trent and Gary Smalley in The Blessing Workbook, which is a companion to The Blessing: Giving the Gift of Unconditional Love and Acceptance, describe this form of blessing as an active commitment to others.
They authors include exercises in their workbook to help readers commit to learning how to bless others. Each chapter includes specific activities with step by step instructions on how to thoughtfully and prayerfully complete exercises that teach how to give positive affirmations to those in our spheres of influence.
Blessing Others PollWhat is your main way of blessing others? Through …
Some of us grew up being encouraged to obey the Golden Rule, that is, to do others as we would like them to do to us. But have we ever stopped to think of the difference it would make in our lives if we lived by these instructions? Not only would our lives be changed, but the lives of those to whom we interact would be positively impacted.
While the obeying the instructions of the verse could be very difficult in some situations, as Christians, we are blessed with the precious Holy Spirit who is our Helper. Let us stop trying to do well to others based on self-effort, instead let us depend on the Holy Spirit daily, to give us the strength to bless others through being good to them.
What are the good things that you want others to show you? Respect, love, kindness and patience are just a few of the things that we would like others to extend to us. We need to start by making a conscious decision to practice them as we relate to others. The next step is to ask God help us to do them as we interact with others.
Focus Verse: “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31, NIV).
Prayer: “Thank you that you give me the strength to face every situation. So as I purpose in my heart to do good to others, I thank you for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to make this a reality in my daily life. In Jesus’ Name, I pray. Amen.”
Gary Smalley Speaks on Giving and Receiving
Take Time to Pray for Others
Prayer is communication with God and is a way of developing our relationship with as we fellowship with him. But an important part of prayer is our asking and receiving from God. When we pray, we must consider others.
We need to pray for our brothers and sisters and the people in our spheres of influence. Our prayer should flow out of a heart of love and compassion, and not just out of a sense of duty. We must pray in faith, with the same conviction as when we pray for our own needs, believing that God hears and answers prayer. We can intercede on behalf of others for many areas of their lives. We could pray that they:
- will accept Christ as their personal Savior
- might grow as Christians
- will receive healing for specific medical conditions
- have strong marriages and families
- might gain employment
- will receive supply for all their needs
These are just a few of the things that we could pray for other people. What a blessing when the people we pray for receive answered prayers for the needs and problems they face?
Focus Verse: “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16, NIV).
Prayer: “Heavenly Father, thank you for the awesome opportunity to pray for others, and see their lives changed as they receive your answer. Give us the strong commitment to pray for others. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”

Forgive Those Who Hurt You
It is so easy to repay evil with evil and to act in kind when people deeply hurt us. But have we considered the wonderful opportunity these situation presents to bless others and to be a blessing?
Like the focus verse, another passage (Luke 6: 27-45) outlines how we should forgive. As I read the passage, I got a wonderful sense of what it means to be truly generous. Consider these concepts of generosity found in the passage:
- love your enemies
- do good to those who hate you
- bless those who mistreat
- give everyone who asks you
- lend to your enemies without expecting to get anything in return
- be merciful as you Father is merciful
- do not judge
- do not condemn
- forgive
Oh, let us thank God for these are wonderful ways to bless others! But make no mistake, we can only respond with such generosity, especially in painful situations, through the power of God. Because he instructs to do it, he knows that we are well able to do just what he says through his power.
Focus Verse: “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing” (1 Peter 3:9, NIV).
Prayer: “Heavenly Father, thank you that I can forgive others, through the power of the Cross of Jesus. So I bless and not curse. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”
Allow God to Work Through You
Blessing others doesn’t come easily to us naturally. After all, the world is filled with revenge and cursing and putting down people. We live in the world, and if we are not careful unless we renew our minds, then we will think and behave just as the world does.
As Christians we are not ordinary people, we are “God’s masterpiece.” This means recognizing who we are in Christ. This knowledge will transform how we think about ourselves. This renewed thinking will show in how we act, and we will find it easier to bless others.
After all, blessing others is simply an extension of who we are in Christ Jesus. Then we are allowing God to work through us to “do the good things he planned for us long ago.”
Focus Verse: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10, NLT).
Prayer: “Heavenly Father, thank you that as your masterpiece, you have created me to bless others and be a blessing. Today, I make a fresh commitment to allow you to work through me. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.”
Commitment to Blessing OthersWhat is your heart/attitude to blessing as others as you move forward? Move Forward and Bless Others
As you read the seven areas of blessings, take some time to reflect on the things that were shared. Then prayerfully ask God to show you how to proceed with blessing others.
Allow the Holy Spirit to guide and empower you in a new season of blessing others, and enjoy a blessed life. Watch God’s blessings flow through you and cause transformation in your sphere of influence. You could find some useful ideas from the article 100 Little Ways to Bless Others.
May God richly bless you!
