How to stop being gluttonous

How to Overcome Gluttony

Is Gluttony a Sin?
In the turn of the century, early 1900’s you hardly heard of heart attacks, cancer, and other types of diseases like today.  The bible does talk about drunkenness and gluttony.  Did you know drunkenness and gluttony is a spirit?  Do you feel good about yourself?  It is an unloving spirit working on you to overeat. Is Gluttony a sin!

Sin of gluttony in America is a problem. In the turn of the century we eating 4 pounds of sugar a year.  Today, we are consuming 130 pounds per person per year. Not only that most of your prepared food and even spices have sugars added to them.  In the early 1900’s diabetes were very few and now over 10 million.

On saturated fats is much higher in our foods.  Also in the turn of the century, heart attacks were unheard of.  The death rate annually from hardening of arteries and degenerative heart disease in the United States is the highest in the world compared to everywhere else.  Life Insurance Companies has shown that a man 45 years of age, who increases his weight by 25 pounds over standard weight, reduces his life expectancy 25%.

The reason is the types of fat we eat.  People are misled by the polyunsaturates in margarines and oils.   They don’t look for hydrogenated on the labels.  The hydrogenated in your oil or butter is plastic.

How to Overcome Gluttony?

We are overweight and eating all the wrong things.  So, what does a person need to eat?  I say the caveman diet.  What is the caveman diet – eliminating processed foods.  You want to lose weight?  Then Eat as natural as you can such as:

  • Fruits ad vegetables, including leafy greens
  • Eat meat 3 times a week
  • Eat less and more often.
  • Don’t eat junk food
  • Eat less sweets
  • Stay away from boxed dinners
  • Less  carbohydrates and starches from bread

Include exercise such as a rebound trampoline in your house to jump while watching TV to overcome overeating.  If you cannot control your food intake and overeat for comfort, you may have a spirit of gluttony.  You may need deliverance from sin of Gluttony then you are able to overcome gluttony.

Other reasons of a spirit of gluttony is because of how we handle our emotions.  When you feel rejected do you eat for comfort?  Need for love?  Do you, when you feel lonely reach for cookies?  When you feel stressed, need to drink some type of alcohol to deal with your stress or some type of food?  That is a false pathway to peace called comfort food or drink.  That is when you use something else besides God to take care of your need.

Deliverance From Gluttony

Read this prayer of deliverance from a Spirit of Gluttony out loud to overcome gluttony

Father God I forgive those who rejected me and hurt me.  I let go of any bitterness I have towards anyone.  Amen.  Father God, forgive me for eating food as a false pathway to peace.  Instead of going to you because I feel lonely or rejected or stressed, forgive me for not going to you.

Forgive me father for drunkenness and gluttony and any other addictions such as to sugar, coffee, etc. or to any drugs or medicines.  Father God, I come against these spirits of gluttony, addictions, false pathways to peace, loneliness, rejection, etc.  I repent, renounce and I cast these spirits out of me and send them to dry places now in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Father God, I know addictions to food comes from not loving myself and when I feel depressed, I go to food for comfort.  I repent and renounce for not loving myself and having a spirit of self hatred.  I also forgive myself for all my past sins and regrets.  I let myself go free and choose to see me as a child of the most high God who is the king of the universe.  I also see me as God’s perfect handiwork.  Amen.

I also address these other spirits by repenting and renouncing these spirits related to gluttony:

  • Nervousness
  • Alcohol
  • Unforgiveness
  • Compulsive Eating
  • Resentment
  • Retaliation
  • Anger

  • Craving for Alcohol
  • Craving for Particular Foods

I read a sobering article a few weeks ago that stated gluttony, or excessive eating, is the most accepted sin in the Christian community.  And it is one of the focus areas of a Christian weight loss approach.

If excessive eating is a challenge for you, I’ve got a picture that can change your life.

I think of gluttony as getting drunk from food. Think about it…how do you feel after stuffing yourself from Thanksgiving dinner? Don’t you feel lethargic…sleepy?

The bible itself lumps drunkenness and gluttony together in Proverbs 23:21:

“For drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags.”

Both alcohol and food have a profound effect on your mental state. Alcohol has a depressive effect and lowers your inhibitions. Certain foods have a chemical makeup that can either make you feel calm or more mentally alert, depending on the food.

Do you want to start growing Spiritually, healing emotionally, and losing the weight? Download my FREE report now: Bible Secrets to Overcome Emotional Eating

While God created food for you to enjoy and allows you to drink alcohol, moderation is key. The problem comes when both are done to excess and you are unable to control yourself. My issues seemed to get worse at night.

I learned recently that the root word of gluttony means “to gulp.” How fitting! When I used to overeat, I was less concerned about what I was eating and more about getting it down as fast as I could to get to the mental effects the food would bring me. I was using food to self medicate.

Is that true of you?

And then after the excessive eating, when my stomach was stretched and aching, I would be overwhelmed with shame and guilt…and regret. I was frustrated and depressed, wondering why I seemed able to control every other area of my life but this one.

It also impacted my spiritual life. As I made excuses for my behavior in this area, it became easier to make excuses for other behavior in my life that wasn’t pleasing to God.

Do you have peace about your eating habits? Gluttony can be a destructive habit at any size. I’ve seen people who are slim, but are secretly bulimic. They eat excessively then purge themselves afterwards.

While my faith helped me to renew my mind regarding eating healthy, it took longer to overcome my tendency to overeat. To this day, there are times when my mind still wants to keep going even after my body says “Enough.” Especially if the food is good!

But with God’s help, I have gained the self control to say “No” to the temptation.

So what picture was I referring to earlier? A couple of weeks ago, I was fasting and praying, and a picture popped into my head of a man with horizontal lines going through his body. Before the image left me, I took a piece of paper and drew it out. I called the image “Temptation Anatomy”.

Once I looked at the picture, it became clear to me as to why gluttony became a habit for me. I believe this picture can be the key to overcoming every other negative habit that you might be struggling with.

Take a moment to look at the picture below:

how to stop being gluttonous

The reason people fall victim to temptations is failure to make the cut between your thoughts and imagination when it comes to destructive thinking habits. Just having a thought about a temptation is not a sin. However, when you start indulging your imagination about that thought, involving your heart and emotions by picturing yourself engaged in that act, that’s when it gives birth to sin.

In the bible, Jesus said that if any man looks on a woman with lust in his heart he has already committed adultery with her (see Matthew 5:28). This is true because the act of imagination breeds desire, desire a decision to do it, and finally, the decision to act.

If it is a habit you’ve practiced a long time, you may not even be aware that you go through these steps…because you’ve done them so many times that you move to Action with lightning speed.

I realized with my gluttony habit in the past, I would often think about going to buy a Pepperidge Farm coconut cake. Then I would generate mental pictures and movies in my head about how good it would taste, which would make me desire to have it. Then, I would decide to go get it. Finally, I would take action and drive to the store. I would end up eating the cake with abandon, even on occasion eating the whole thing.

So you see, a diet will NEVER fix the tendency to gluttony. It is an external solution to an internal problem. Sure, you can restrict your food intake, but unless you learn to exercise self control at the Imagination level, you will go back to your old habits as soon as the diet is over.

Makes sense?

Here is the mistake most people make: They have the thought, start imagine doing it, desire to do it…then try to exercise self control at the Decision level by talking themselves out of it.

That is way too late! Once you start imagining, it is very hard to stop yourself from moving to action.

So the easiest thing to do is to stop it right at the Thought level…imagine cutting the temptation off at the head as in the picture. Then, patiently replace the thought with something else because the mind cannot hold onto two thoughts at the same time.

What is the best thing to replace your thoughts with? The word of God. That is why it is so important that you study the bible so that your mind is renewed and you can be transformed. My favorite scriptures related to this habit are Romans 14:17 – “For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.”

And Galatians 5:22-23 is another good one: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”

Print the “Temptation Anatomy” picture and post it on your refrigerator or any other place where you need the reminder of how temptations work.

Pray that God grant you wisdom in your eating habits and trust that he will answer your prayer. SLOW DOWN and really taste your food. Enjoy it. You must eat slowly in order to hear when your body says “Enough.” And when it speaks, listen and stop eating. Put the fork, spoon, bag or box down. What the enemy means for harm, you can allow God to work the situation out for your good.

Your mind will protest as you start this new habit, but smile and simply tell yourself, “No.” Speak it aloud if you have to. What the mouth speaks, the ears hear, and the soul absorbs.

You will be amazed at how powerful this little word will make you feel. And each time you say it, it will get easier.

Finally, learn about other ways you can relax and calm down. I’ve have found that most people overeat in response to stress. There are far more effective ways to manage stress than to eat. One simple, but overlooked technique is to practice deep breathing regularly when you feel tension in your body. Another is simple stretching exercises. Praise music is also a great relaxation tool. Find some alternatives that work well for you.

The bottom line is that your body is not your own. Remember, because you are a disciple of Christ, your body houses God’s spirit – an honored guest! Keep this in mind as you welcome that guest by allowing him to cultivate those fruits of the Spirit within you, including the fruit of self control.

Then by your faith and positive action, you will be truly asking God to “Take Back Your Temple.”

Be blessed in health, healing, and wholeness,

Food is not the Problem

Many of us come to this course desperately seeking help to lose weight—but now trying to do it “God’s way.” We have tried practically every diet under the sun—resulting in utter failure.

Why do you think other diets failed you? Weren’t these other diets created by highly regarded health and nutrition experts? Didn’t you learn much about calories, carbohydrates, proteins, and fat grams? Yes, this is good information, but they all possess one fatal error—they assume food is the problem.

The diet industry is correct in observing the facts that too many calories in and too little calories burned cause weight gain. Their hypothesis: If we are overweight, then food is the problem. Their solution is to change the types of food we eat to bring about weight loss.

But God’s solution is contrary to their solution:

Colossians 2:20-23 20 Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations– 21 Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” 22 which all concern things which perish with the using – according to the commandments and doctrines of men? 23 These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. The principles of the world are man-made system of rules—which focus only on the external body. It does not deal with the issues of the heart—which is where real change takes place. Haven’t you noticed that when you are told to deny your body something that it craves, you only want it more? That’s because your heart attitude did not change with the behavior. That is the problem. Food is not the problem. So, when we understand that our condition is a result of indulging the flesh, we realize it is foolish to change the types of foods with which we indulge the flesh. If I forsake eating of all breads and only indulge with meat, what have I profited? My heart and lifestyle have not changed and even though I might lose weight for a time, it will surely come back on until I learn the problem is I have a habit of indulging my flesh, rather than the type of food I eat. Full In Christ

Paul warns the Colossians to beware of those who will try to control and manipulate you into living under the burden of man’s rules and restrictions instead of the freedom found only in Christ.

Colossians 2:8-10 says, 8 Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. 9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

This Christian life is not about outward behavior. Restricting certain foods or denying ourselves certain types of foods by following a set of man-made rules is not what following Christ is about. God looks at the inward part of us—the heart. He wants our hearts to be filled up with Him and then our outward behavior will conform to what’s inside our hearts.

Nothing Is To Be Refused

In 1 Timothy 4:1-5, Paul points out that commands to abstain from foods which God created is in the list of the characteristics of those who depart from the faith!

“1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, 2 speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, 3 forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; 5 for it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.” 1 Tim 4:1-5 Note: I would like to make a distinction between foods God created verses the “anti-food” man has created which is passed off as food, such as Twinkies and other chemically processed “foods.” I’m not saying eating the anti-food is a sin, but we must answer to God if these anti-foods are causing physical harm and weakness. So, what are Christians to do if we want to lose weight?

We are to receive all types of “real” food with thanksgiving to God who created it. We are to eat the God-created foods in a disciplined and self-controlled manner. This is a life-style approach rather than the temporary diet method.

For the Christian, this way of life requires a constant feeding on the Word of God, praying without ceasing and being filled with the Holy Spirit as we live in this self-indulgent fallen world.

how to stop being gluttonous

This guy was a pain in the butt. But using what people above have said, I equipped a Shock sniper rifle in one slot and a Fire one in another. I engaged him, and tried to find that ladder people spoke of. I was getting owned on my way there, and tried to hide around this corner by the gate leading into the area to regenerate my shield. He followed me, and if I was crammed far into the corner, he couldn’t get at me.

I’d quickly poke my head out then back into the corner to make him pop up from the ground, wait for him to strike while I’m in the corner, after he does then pop out and fire a shot or two from my Shock sniper rifle to drain his shield, switch to my Fire sniper rifle and unload on him in the eyes like someone said above. Once I found this out, it was pretty easy — I could shoot him, and he couldn’t hit me. As you can see though it took a lot of rounds to do the job, I went in full and only had 5 rounds left, lol.

It would probably be just as effective with a gun with more rounds though, but those were the only shock/fire guns I had on me.

Hope this helps!

Cheers

Edit: Just want to clarify that he could actually get at me occasionally even crammed in the corner, but my health was at 72 the whole time around the corner. The time between his hits still gave my shield enough time to regenerate, and it’s a really slow one to regenerate too.
