You undoubtedly came to check out this post about prayer for weight loss because you are currently on a weight loss journey or you have been combatting weight issues for some time. I welcome you and hope you find some peace, encouragement, hope, and love in the prayer for weight loss I’ve written for you.

Dieting is often a rollercoaster because there are so many factors that go into losing weight especially emotions – and oh boy do I know that. I am currently on my own weight loss journey, and I have learned a lot in my endeavor of dieting and seeking a healthy lifestyle.

One of my biggest lessons in all of this has been that I have surrendered to weight loss being a journey and a journey is just that, a journey. Sometimes we will have good days and others we will not. Dieting is hard because we have to eat. We can’t just quit eating! So we have to eat. What’s important are the foods we choose. I pray you choose well today. I pray that temptation does not win. Keep staying on the road, it is worth it!

It really is worth it, seeking after your goals and being able to stay on the course is the ultimate goal. I hope that prayer for weight loss brings a lot of encouragement for you on your own journey!

Gracious God, I have a goal and a desire to be more healthy. I know only true health comes from you. While it may be tough, I know if I stay the course I will succeed. However, some moments and even days are tough for my mind wants what will cause me to fail. Help me fight off those temptations. Help me to stay the course. I need your strength, and I need you to provide my determination. Help me to find clever ways to stay focused and on the path, for you are the Creator of all and You know what I need. Thank you always. Amen.

weight loss prayer

God, I do not know how to feed myself properly. I gravitate to foods that are not nutritional. I do not know how to crave an apple or a salad. I really know how to crave fast food. I need you to switch my desires. I need you to come and help me. Amen.

God, the scale hasn’t moved in days, and I am getting frustrated. I am doing everything right, but this “lack of progress” makes me want to give up. Please help me overcome this small hurdle so that I can stay on the path toward my goal of health. Amen.

weight loss prayer

God, I confess I overeat. I find myself eating and eating and eating some more until I am really full. This comforts me, and I do not know why! Reveal my brokenness in this bad habit. I need Your wisdom. Amen.

Utilizing a prayer diet is a great way to lose weight.
Like many things in life that are difficult, praying to god can make
it easier to make positive changes in your life.

The most important aspect of a Prayer Diet, is consistency. You must pray on a daily basis, every morning, in order to keep your goals front of mind.
By starting this dialogue with god every morning, with his help, youll get the energy
to make the daily changes needed to become healthy by eating better and exercising.

Here is a great prayer example for you to say each morning to help focus the mind on your goals.

A Prayer to Lose Weight

Guide me lord, as I strive to lose weight
You are my light and my anchor, and with
you I know all things are possible.

Help me this day to make healthy choices and
give me the strength to fight against destructive
cravings that negatively effect my health.

You said, The LORD upholdeth all that fall,
and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.
As I bow before you today, raise me up
help me towards my goals.

I have been taught that anything that replaces
God is an idol. Help me to reject any unhealthy
habit in which I seek false comfort. For you
are my one true comfort and salvation.

In your name I pray, Amen.

A Prayer for Strength to Succeed

Lord, I come to You today to ask for affirmation. I have done all things and stayed away from all the food I am not supposed to have. Bless me, Father, for more strength to keep it this way.

Give me the grace to be stronger and encourage me to keep pushing on. With you, my God, nothing is impossible. I believe that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Thank you, Father for listening to my plea. I pray this with all Your angels. Amen.

A Prayer to Resist the Cravings

Today I pray to You to grant me the strength to stay away from anything that is unhealthy – alcohol, junk food, carbohydrates and mycotoxins.

I pray that this will help me lose the weight I have gained. Help me stay focused on being healthy and fit, dear God. I believe that I can do all things through Christ, your Son, who truly strengthens me.

May this enable me to steer away from all the unhealthy choices that I face each day. I pray that this strength will keep me focused on disciplining my body and do my workouts religiously. I pray that anything I do, eat or drink only be for Your greater glory.

I pray for a support group to push me towards the finish line. I ask for all these in this prayer, O Lord. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Use these prayers, or write your own, and make sure to say it
every day before your first meal. Keep focused. The prayer diet is a great way to…

What does the Bible say about dieting and weight loss?  I’m sure you’ve probably thought about this before.  And in this post we are going to talk about nutrition, diet, and weight loss from a biblical stand point.

According to the USA Center for Disease Control in 2010, 35.9 %  of adults age 20 years are obese and  69.2% of adults age 20 years are overweight.  That is a staggering number.  If you’re a Christian I’m sure you’ve noticed this while attending church.  What’s worse is that we are now passing this on to our children  18.4% of adolescents age 12-19 years are obese, 18%  of children age 6-11 years are obese, 12.1% of children age 2-5 years are obese.

How do you think God sees this?  What the bible says about food, eating, weight loss, dieting & nutrition is exactly what God thinks about it.   Here are some scriptures to consider:
3 John 1:2 “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.”

So we see that God wants us to be in good health.  If you think about it, you won’t be able to fulfill the plans that He has for your life unless you are in good health and you are taking care of your body, which is His temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

Also consider this scripture

Proverbs 23:20-21 “Be not among drunkards or among gluttonous eaters of meat, for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty, and slumber will clothe them with rags.”The bible has many scriptures that pair gluttony and drunkenness together and we see that the correlation between the two is that these are things that are bad when done in excess.  Excessive drinking and eating is what leads to the sin. When God created the garden of Eden it was a perfect place and he created plant life to be man’s sustenance.  Adam and Eve were vegan. Yes, contrary to popular belief we actually do not need to eat meat or any kind of animal flesh to be in good health.  If we did, God would have given it to Adam and Eve in the garden.

Genesis 1:29 “And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.”This was the the world in perfection.  It wasn’t until after sin and the fall of man and the flood with Noah that man was then given the go ahead to eat meat.  You must remember that all these wild animals were in the ark with Noah and they certainly weren’t eating each other!  After the flood here’s what the Lord said…

Genesis 9:1-29 “And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. The fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth and upon every bird of the heavens, upon everything that creeps on the ground and all the fish of the sea. Into your hand they are delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. But you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.”This was the first time man was told to eat meat. This scripture is referring to the ungoldly…

Philippians 3:19 “Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.”And, here is a scripture that talks about church leaders
1 Timothy 3:8 “Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain.”

So what should you be eating?  What’s on the Bible Weight Management Program?

Genesis 1:30 “And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.”

Deuteronomy 8:8 “A land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and honey”

Deuteronomy 14:1-29 ““You are the sons of the Lord your God. You shall not cut yourselves or make any baldness on your foreheads for the dead. For you are a people holy to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. “You shall not eat any abomination. These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep. …”

Genesis 43:11 “Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry a present down to the man, a little balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds.”

Leviticus 3:17 “It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, in all your dwelling places, that you eat neither fat nor blood.”

Proverbs 23:1-3 “When you sit down to eat with a ruler, observe carefully what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite. Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.”

Leviticus 11:1-47 “And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, These are the living things that you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. Whatever parts the hoof and is cloven-footed and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat. Nevertheless, among those that chew the cud or part the hoof, you shall not eat these: The camel, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you. And the rock badger, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you.”

Ephesians 5:18 “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit”

Please notice that the bible never says that we shouldn’t drink wine.  What it says is that we shouldn’t get drunk on wine.  Abstinence from alcohol and other grape products was a vow for a special group of people in the bible known as Nazarites. So this is a personal choice and a decision that is left up to you and what the Lord has reveal to you as His will for your own life.

As you sit to eat consider this scripture

1 Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

This is an awesome scripture that we should all meditate on before we eat our meals so that we can truly ask ourselves “Is this meal glorifying the Lord?”  “Will the Lord be pleased with what I am about to eat or drink?”  I think if we meditate on that we would make better choices and we would focus more on portion control.

When we are Praying over our meals before we eat it is also a good time to reflect on what we are eating and how much we eat and ask God for guidance in managing our weight.

Do you know the story of Daniel who was brought to King Nebuchadnezzar’s Palace and was given the king’s food and wine daily?  Daniel asked for the chief eunuch, who was in charge of Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abendego, to feed them only vegetables.

Here’s the story in Daniel 1…

11 Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, 12 “Test your servants for ten days; let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. 13 Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king’s food be observed by you, and deal with your servants according to what you see.” 14 So he listened to them in this matter, and tested them for ten days. 15 At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king’s food. 16 So the steward took away their food and the wine they were to drink, and gave them vegetables.

Many Christians use this scripture to go on what is known as a Daniel Fast of only eating vegetables.  The truth is that Daniel and his friends were not on a fast, this is the way they ate all the time!  This was Daniel’s lifestyle this was not a diet or a fast for him.  This would be a biblical weight loss diet. He asked the chief eunuch to test it out for 10 days but this was only so that he could prove the results of his chosen lifestyle.  The fact is that Daniel continued to eat this way after the 10 days. Some of us need to seriously consider a lifestyle change and not just a diet. This would truly be a way to have divine health today.

The following is a prayer for all who may be struggling with weight management.  God does not want you to live in an unhealthy lifestyle.  He wants you to be healthy and strong so that you can carry out His purpose for you.

Prayer for Weight Loss

Father God we thank you for making us in Your image and for creating us beautiful.  We repent for the abuse that we have put upon this temple that you’ve entrusted to us.  Forgive us for drinking too much, for abusing drugs & alcohol, for our eating disorders, for our lack of exercise, for not practicing portion control, for eating because of our emotions and not because of hunger, forgive us for eating all the wrong things that we know offer no nutritional value to our bodies. We ask that you would take your Word and renew our mind.  Renew our desires by your Holy Spirit.  When we look at food cause us to see it the way you see it as sustenance and nothing else.  For you are the One who offers us true comfort and not food.  Educate us on what is good and wholesome for our bodies.  May we be satisfied with just what we need to live.  Take away the desires and cravings that we have for things that are not good for our bodies.  Cleanse us and detoxify our minds.  Allow us to start afresh today by praying over our meals and asking for your grace to keep on track with proper eating and exercise.  We know that You have begun this good work in us today and will carrying it through to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.  We hand our temple over to you Holy Spirit and ask that you impart upon us the fruit of the Spirit of Self Control.  We ask that you would create a new heart in us and make us new creations in Christ Jesus that want to do nothing more than glorify You with our bodies.  Give us the mind of Christ to see food, drinking and exercise as you see it.  Create a lifestyle change in our minds and hearts.  We praise you for the results, in Jesus Name, Amen!

An expert explains:

“Spending even a few minutes a day in prayer or meditation helps women deepen their faith, and this spiritual growth anchors them against temptation and doubt so they’re less likely to cheat or give up on their healthy habits out of frustration.

That’s why so many women who reach their goal weight end up referring to their weight-loss journey as a faith journey, as well.”
~Gregory Jantz, Ph.D., author of The Body God Designed

Prayer Strategies that Women Use for Weight Loss:

Here are some approaches that women have used in their weight-loss journey. You can start implementing the strategies that speak to your heart.

A. Prayer Journal

Dr. Jantz says:

“Prayer is often thought of as something we do verbally or in the quiet of our minds, but journaling thoughts and desires can be a powerful way to seek guidance.

You want to spend some time with your thoughts and jot down whatever comes to mind.

More often than not, God will show you the answers and give you strength in the words you are writing.”

He suggests starting with a prayer like:

“Please show me what I need to know.

What emotions am I feeling? Is it my hungry heart?”

Lysa TerKeurst’s Prayer and Weight-Loss Journey

When Lysa began faithfully journaling about her weight-loss struggles, in her book she says:

“As I wrote, God showed me that He made us people who would crave, so we would always desire more of Him, but I was misplacing those desires.

When I felt down, I’d eat french fries or a brownie. That would temporarily make me feel good, but food would never feed my soul.”
~Lysa TerKeurst, author of Made to Crave

Once Lysa recognized this pattern, she started to pause when she would get cravings for junk food and pray. This is her prayer for weight loss:

“God, please give me perspective.

Am I physically hungry or am I spiritually hungry? If I’m spiritually hungry, I just need You to be with me right now. And if I’m physically hungry, I need Your strength to get something healthy instead of french fries.”

Lysa recalls:

“Each time I craved something that wasn’t part of my plan, I used that craving as a prompt to pray.

I craved a lot, so I found myself praying a lot, but I stopped filling emotional voids with food and started growing closer to God.”

B. Expressions of Gratitude

Take time to express thanks for the blessings in your life.

“Looking at the positive things you have going for you — say, a loving husband or a flourishing scrapbooking business — shifts your mind-set toward what gives your life purpose.

When you’re focused on these gifts rather than the numbers on the scale, you’re going to have more incentive to be healthy and to stick with an eating plan that makes you more vibrant.
~Charles D’Angelo, author or Think and Grow Thin

Michele Geldt – Weight-Loss and Faith Journey

Michele, who lost 67 pounds, says:

“Each night before bed I thank God for everything that brought me joy. It helps me sleep more soundly and I wake in the morning knowing there is so much to celebrate in life, and that motivates me.”

C. Spiritual Movement

Dr. Jantz suggests:

“If you find that you struggle to quiet your mind or can’t find words or focus to talk to God, try taking a 20-minute walk or even just dancing free-form around your house.”

The physical activity helps eliminate distractions and allows you to tune into a faithful mind-set.

Many women also find that combining prayer with movement helps them enjoy exercise.

Tricia Greaves – Spiritual Journey for Weight-Loss

Tricia, who lost 50 pounds, shares her experience:

“I look forward to putting on my sneakers and going for my walk-pray everyday.

I lay out my concerns, problems and fears. I ask God for help and strength. And I tell Him about all the things I love about my life.

By the end of my walk, I feel energized, unburdened and peaceful. It’s a very self-caring way to exercise.”

D. Prayers of Petition

Dr. Jantz encourages:

“It’s not uncommon to feel like you’re alone on your journey when the scale won’t budge, but that’s when you need to cry out to God for help.

God says in Luke 11:9: ‘Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.’

All you have to do is admit, This is bigger than I am and I can’t do this on my own. God will relieve you of your anger, doubts and frustrations and show you the way.”

Carol Allen – Prayerful Journey

Carol’s request for help enabled her to break free from years of yo-yo dieting. She shares:

“I told Him I felt like one of those women in the Bible who had seen all the doctors but had not been healed.

I prayed,

‘If you want me to try something to lose weight, please lead me to it.’

Not long after, my hairdresser told me about a diet and I knew it was a sign. I went for it, and now I’m 139 pound lighter.”

E. Daily Devotions

Spending 10 minutes a day studying the Bible can provide an insight and encouragement that helps you grow spiritually.

Emily James’ Weight-Loss Journey with Morning Devotional

Emily, who lost 46 pounds, shares her experience:

“I start my mornings with a chapter from Heather Harpham Kopp’s The Dieter’s Prayer Book.

It gaves me a Bible verse or prayer to turn to when I’m struggling with temptations — it keeps me on track.”
