Verses to pray over your daughter

verses to pray over your daughter

Daughters are precious gifts from God and we want to do all that we can to protect her heart and spirit.

Have you ever prayed Bible verses over your daughter?  Praying Scripture is a practice near and dear to my heart.  I never have to wonder if I am praying for God’s will because I am praying His own words.  Beautiful!

When it comes to praying for our daughters, we need all the direction we can get!  Navigating the path from childhood to adulthood is treacherous; finding their way in this ever-changing world is scary.  We MUST pray for them daily.  It is the best parenting move you can make.

Praying Scripture means letting go of our own desires and leaning only on what God says in His Word.  You don’t have to guess at what He wants to give your girls, but you do have to release your ideas, which isn’t easy.  Sometimes it means praying scary things, like perseverance or what seems like a loss.  It takes practice and dedication, but it’s SUCH a great thing to do.

There are many verses in the Bible we can pray for, but these 5 are some that our daughters need most.

  1. Pray that they will love the Lord with all their heart and mind.  (Matthew 22:37-38)Young people have a tendency to love themselves above all else.  They lose sight of God when they face the trials of school, friendships, chores, etc.  You are right to ask God that they would love Him with all of their heart.  He clearly wants that over their self-focused desires.
  2. Ask that their thoughts would be pure.  (Philippians 4:8)Man, this is tough for all of us!  But when you’re dealing with hormones and boys and feelings you’ve never felt before, it can seem impossible.  But God says it is possible!  He tells us what to focus on and we need to pray that our girls find the strength to put their focus there.  Be sure you’re setting the example for them….let them know it’s hard for you too!
  3. Pray that Jesus will call them and no one will hinder them from coming to Him.  (Matthew 19:13)Like the disciples tried to stop the little children from approaching Jesus, people today try to stop our children from responding to Him.  This could be anyone, so be a prayer warrior for your girl!  She needs the support from heaven.
  4. Pray that they will respond to His call.  (2 Peter 3:9)Young ladies can think their life is rolling along so slowly.  I know I felt that way!  But God says He is not slow to fulfill His promises even though it seems like it.  Ask Him to help your daughter be patient and ready for repentance when He calls.
  5. Ask for them to be stirred to give to the Lord generously.  (Exodus 35:29)Kids like their stuff and their own agenda.  God wants them to let go of what He has given them and be willing to give to His purposes.  He makes it clear that we are to bring a freewill offering.  This takes sacrifice and we need to pray for our daughters to embrace this as a blessing and not a loss.

This is just a sampling of Bible verses to pray over your daughter.  You can pray all of God’s Word with joy and confidence, knowing that He will provide for all of these things.

verses to pray over your daughter

I have always wanted to be a prayer warrior.

I remember hearing stories of the power of prayer from missionaries that would come to our church growing up, or testimonies of women who prayed for their husbands and children incessantly until they came to know Jesus. I love those stories, and I wanted that – I wanted to make a difference through prayer too.

I wanted to be a praying mother, but after I had my first baby, I struggled with figuring out what to pray for.

Sometimes we feel like we aren’t “good” at prayer just because we don’t know where to start.

Thankfully, I read several good books and articles around that time with really helpful lists that gave me some direction during my prayer time. I read a whole book on praying for my sons, but I was unable to find a good equivalent book for girls. (Somebody, please write that book!) So many prayers for our children can be prayed for both boys and girls, and a few of these can as well, but I wanted focus here on some things that I especially hope and pray for my girls as they grow.

Her Salvation

Eternal salvation is still the most important thing I pray for all my kids! I want them to recognize what Jesus did in dying on the cross to pay for their sins and rising again. I want them to turn to Him to save them and always remember His love for them.

If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. — Romans 10:9-10

To Find Her Identity in Christ

As a woman in today’s culture, where we are expected to be able to “do it all”, I have struggled with my identity and purpose and have had to remind myself that I am first a child of God, saved by His grace. I pray that my daughters will always find their identity in Christ and remember that their purpose is to glorify Him.

But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. — 1 Peter 2:9

To Walk in A Manner Worthy of Her Calling (and to Have a Spirit of Repentance When She Fails)

Along the same lines, I pray my girls keep their ultimate purpose in mind as they live their daily lives, which is to glorify God and point others to Christ. And, when they inevitably stray from what they know is right, I pray that they recognize it and turn back to Jesus in repentance.

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,  with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,  endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. — Ephesians 4:1-3

Therefore, having these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. — 2 Corinthians 7:1

To Have a Love for God and His Word

The Bible is God’s written Word to us, and I pray that my girls will have a love for God and His Word, and will turn to the Bible first for their answers.

With my lips I have declared

All the judgments of Your mouth.I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,As much as in all riches.I will meditate on Your precepts,And contemplate Your ways.I will delight myself in Your statutes;I will not forget Your word. — Psalm 119:13-16

Use and Cultivate Their Spiritual Gifts for God’s Glory

I pray that my daughters will recognize their spiritual gifts and talents that the Lord has given them, and use those gifts to bring glory to God.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. — 1 Peter 4:10

To Have a Desire for Wisdom

Proverbs is clear that godly wisdom is to be prized. I want my girls to seek to be biblically wise in all their decisions and interactions.

Wisdom is the principal thing;

Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.Exalt her, and she will promote you;She will bring you honor, when you embrace her.She will place on your head an ornament of grace;A crown of glory she will deliver to you. — Proverbs 4:7-8

Healthy and Godly Relationships with Family and Friends

Healthy relationships play such an important role in every person’s life, and much pain comes when relationships sometimes go bad. I pray for my girls to have and offer the support that comes from God-Honoring friendships and family relationships.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. — Ephesians 4:2-3 (NIV)

Her Future Husband and Marriage

While many women honor God through lives of singleness, and my daughters’ may as well, in all likelihood, my girls will someday get married. I want to pray now for their future husbands, and for them as I hope to prepare them for a good marriage.

Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. — Proverbs 31:10

Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. — Ephesians 5:33

To Value Her Role in the Home and Family

The Bible calls women to be “keepers” of their homes, and I think this can apply whether my daughters are working in the home, out of the home, married or single. I want my daughters to learn how to manage their home well no matter their situation in life, and to realize how valuable and honorable that role is.

And so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. — Titus 2:4-5 (ESV)

To Train Their Own Children to Love The Lord

Mothers play a major role in nurturing and raising their children, and they are often the first to teach their children about God. I pray for my daughters as they will hopefully take on that important role someday in their own families.

And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. — Deuteronomy 6:6-7

I’ve also just started to realize that keeping prayer in the back of my mind helps me to pray for more for my children. Something that no one tells you is that praying for our kids doesn’t have to happen during a designated prayer time – if I am thinking about something specific for my kids, why not pray about it right now? As I encountered certain verses in my devotion time, or certain life situations that remind me of these things that I want to pray for my kids, I am learning to take a moment right then to pray for my children and cover them in prayer all through our days together.

Your Turn

What do you pray for your daughters? Here are just a few resources to help moms strengthen a life of prayer and faith themselves…and for their daughters (or sons)!

www.faithgateway.com

The busy days of a mom, often have us reverting to recited or mumbled payers at mealtimes and bedtimes.

Throughout the day we lift short prayers of desperation like these,

“Lord, I need patience in about half a second!”

“Father, give me grace.”

“Jesus, protect them.”

“Jesus, heal my child.”

Many times as I collapse into bed, I’ve uttered the prayer, “Lord, please just make them turn out all right!”

I feel like I barely cover the bases.

However, I know we can be a much mightier force when we fight for our children’s souls by purposely placing ourselves in the gap, interceding on their behalf.

Consider Ezekiel 22:30-31. When applied to parenting it has a very eye opening aspect to it. I have added my own words in the brackets .

This is the Lord speaking,

“I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before Me in the gap on behalf of the land  so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none. So, I will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with my fiery anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done, declares the Sovereign Lord.”

Sobering. Very, very sobering.

May you and I bravely stand in the gap, using the power of prayer to build a wall around our children.

Have you ever considered the weighty responsibilities our husbands (or future husbands) face as men of God? Not only are they called to be a witness to the world, but they are given the divine challenge to model Christ in their daily living with their wives and children.

Model Christ.

The humble servant who did not cling to His divinity, but sacrificed all to redeem the sins of the world.

And our husbands are directed to model that kind of love to their families.

Ladies, that is no small task. They can do this only through perseverance, submission to Christ, and the working of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

And it is our glorious responsibility and high honor to intercede on behalf of our husbands! Let us bow our knees and approach the throne of grace with boldness and humility, beseeching the Almighty on behalf of our husbands.

“My word that comes from My mouth will not return to Me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do.” (Isaiah 55:11)

Ten Scripture Verses to Pray Over Your Husband

verses to pray over your daughter

Psalm 119:14- 16

I rejoice in the way revealed by Your decrees as much as in all riches. I will meditate on Your precepts and think about Your ways. I will delight in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.

Heavenly Father I pray that my husband will rejoice and delight in Your word and law. Please bring to his mind today Your words that he has memorized, and use those words to protect his heart and mind. I ask that his heart and mind will be focused on You.

II Corinthians 9:7

The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. Each person should do as he has decided in his heart—not reluctantly or out of necessity, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Heavenly Father I ask that you will give my husband a generous and giving spirit. Please give us wisdom as we manage our finances so that we will be able to bless others out of the bounty you have provided for us. Thank you that you supply every need in perfect time.

I Peter 2:2

So rid yourselves of all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all slander. Like newborn infants, desire the pure spiritual milk, so that you may grow by it for your salvation, since you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Heavenly Father, I ask that my husband will be holy before you, cleansing himself of malice, deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander. May your Spirit draw him to you so that he desires, craves your Word. Lord, as he studies your Word I pray that he will grow closer to you and become more like Christ.

Ephesians 5:25-29

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her to make her holy, cleansing her with the washing of water by the word…husbands are to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hates his own flesh but provides and cares for it, just as Christ does for the church, since we are members of His body.

Heavenly Father, I pray that you will empower my husband to lead and love me in the same way Christ loves His church. Please give him the heart of a servant-leader, submitting himself to Christ so that he can lead our family in holiness and humility. Thank you for the sweet relationship of marriage, I ask that you will use our marriage as a testimony of your love for your church.

James 3:13-17

Who is wise and has understanding among you? He should show his works by good conduct with wisdom’s gentleness. But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don’t brag and deny the truth…For where envy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every kind of evil. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peace-loving, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without favoritism and hypocrisy.

Heavenly Father, I pray that you will grant my husband wisdom that is pure, gentle, and mercy-filled. Please give him wisdom as he leads our family, that he may demonstrate peace. Please give him wisdom as he performs his job, may he find favor with those whom he works as well as you. Please give him wisdom as he serves our community, so that he will not show favoritism or hypocrisy. I thank you that your word says that you will give wisdom to those who ask.

Proverbs 20:7

The one who lives with integrity is righteous; his children who come after him will be happy.

Heavenly Father I pray that my husband will walk with integrity. Make him a man of honor and courage who models Christ-like love for his family and others.

Luke 10:27

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.

Heavenly Father I pray that my husband will love you with all of his heart, all of his soul, and all of his strength. Please show your resplendent love to him, and let him see it. Help us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

Colossians 3:12-13

Therefore, God’s chosen ones, holy and loved, put on heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, accepting one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a complaint against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you must also forgive.

Heavenly Father I pray that my husband will be filled with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Please give him a forgiving heart that seeks to reconcile broken relationships. Thank you for the forgiveness that is available to us through the work of Christ.

Ephesians 6:13

This is why you must take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand.

Heavenly Father I pray that my husband will put on your armor. Please equip him to be able to resist temptation. I pray that he will flee from evil desires and set his eyes on you so that he will be able to stand strong and courageous against the evil one.

Psalm 91:14-16

Because he is lovingly devoted to Me, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he knows My name. When he calls out to Me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble. I will rescue him and give him honor. I will satisfy him with a long life and show him My salvation.

Heavenly Father I pray that my husband will be devoted to you. Please answer him when he calls to you, and rescue him when he faces trials. I ask you that you will protect and preserve his life with your mighty hand, and satisfy him with a long life.
