Restoration of the Gospel

See also Apostasy; Dispensation; Gospel; Smith, Joseph, Jr.

God’s reestablishment of the truths and ordinances of His gospel among men on earth. The gospel of Jesus Christ was lost from the earth through the apostasy that took place following the earthly ministry of Christ’s Apostles. That apostasy made necessary the Restoration of the gospel. Through visions, the ministering of angels, and revelations to men on the earth, God restored the gospel. The Restoration started with the Prophet Joseph Smith (JS—H 1; D&C 128:20–21) and has continued to the present through the work of the Lord’s living prophets.

  • The Lord’s house shall be established in the top of the mountains, Isa. 2:2 (Micah 4:2; 2 Ne. 12:2).

  • God will do a marvellous work and a wonder, Isa. 29:14 (2 Ne. 25:17–18; D&C 4:1).

  • God shall set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed, Dan. 2:44.

  • Elias will come, and restore all things, Matt. 17:11 (Mark 9:12; D&C 77:14).

  • There will come times of restitution of all things, Acts 3:21 (D&C 27:6).

  • In the dispensation of the fulness of times, God will gather together in one all things, Eph. 1:10.

  • I saw another angel, having the everlasting gospel to preach, Rev. 14:6.

  • The fulness of the gospel will come unto the Gentiles, 1 Ne. 15:13–18.

  • The Jews shall be restored to the true church, 2 Ne. 9:2.

  • In the latter day shall the truth come, 3 Ne. 16:7.

  • Upon you I confer the Priesthood of Aaron, D&C 13 (JS—H 1:69).

  • I have committed the keys of the kingdom for the last times, D&C 27:6, 13–14 (D&C 128:19–21).

  • Gather together the tribes of Israel and restore all things, D&C 77:9.

  • The keys of this dispensation are committed, D&C 110:16 (D&C 65:2).

  • The priesthood is given in the dispensation of the fulness of times, D&C 112:30.

  • I saw two Personages, JS—H 1:17.

  • I will reveal unto you the priesthood, by the hand of Elijah, JS—H 1:38 (Mal. 4:5–6).

scriptures on family restoration

Whether you’re part of a blended, single-parent, foster, adoptive, or traditional two-parent family, your family is important to God. You can ask him for anything in regard to your family as long as it’s in line with his heart, his desires . . . and essentially, His will. (See scripture prayers at the bottom of this post.)

Just so you know, family unity is definitely “according to his will.”

“Families are the basic, foundational social units in all human communities around the world, and healthy individuals within healthy families are at the core of a healthy society.”  University of Nebraska – NebGuide by UNL Extension Family Life specialists and educators. (John DeFrain, Gail Brand, Jeanette Friesen, Dianne Swanson)

Healthy families are good for all of us, because the state of the family directly impacts the state of our society.

Strong families produce children who have the tools to grow up to become healthy, mature, well-adjusted adults.

The family unit is:

  • God’s idea
  • God’s design
  • An expression of God’s nature and essence (The Truth Project, Del Tackett)

How God designed the family:

When God formed the earth, flinging stars in the sky, and creating life, he said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”

When he says “us”, he’s referring to the active participation of every member of the godhead in creation. Father. Son. Holy Spirit.

There’s community and relationship within God between:

God the Father . . . God the Son . . . God the Holy Spirit.

(John 10:30, 2 Corinthians 13:14, John 4:34, Matthew 26:39)

Within family, we’re meant to experience the same intimacy, oneness, community, and fellowship God experiences in the godhead. That’s his plan for our families.

Family members are meant to take care of one another, and sacrifice for “us.” But we’re each imperfect and we live with imperfect people. Rather than fighting with our families, it’s important to fight for our families.

Praying hard. Praying often.

Here are some powerful prayers you can use to pray for strength, unity, forgiving hearts, harmony, and steadfast love within your family. These prayers are powerful because they’re based on the things God has had inspired men write down for our benefit.

Scripture prayers for your home and family:

  • “Father God . . . I ask you to help each member of our family (name them) to be completely humble and gentle in our interactions with each other; and to be patient, bearing with one another’s faults in love – even when we’re tired, frustrated, angry, or hurt. Help us Father, to make every effort to remain united in the Spirit in this home. Please bind us together in peace.” Ephesians 4:2-3
  • “Gracious God . . . help us (name your family members) to love each other fervently. Grow our love so deep that it is able and willing to overcome and forgive a multitude of sins. Inspire a spirit of hospitality in (family member names) and enable us to cheerfully share our home with those who need a meal or a place to stay. God I acknowledge that you have given each one in this family spiritual gifts. Help us to put our own needs aside and use those gifts to serve one another well. We will rely on the strength and energy you alone supply. I pray that everything we do within this family unit will bring you glory through the One who lives in us – your Son, Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 4:8-11
  • “God – you are the One who gives us perseverance and encouragement. In you, we have hope. Help our family (name family members) live in complete harmony with each other, as is fitting for followers of Jesus Christ.” Romans 15:5
  • “Loyal and trustworthy God, help my spouse (insert name here) and I to honor our marriage and clearly see how valuable and precious it really is. As we honor our marriage to one another, and our covenant with you, help us keep our marriage bed pure.” Hebrews 13:4

Bible Verses About Family

Are You a Prayer Worrier or a Prayer Warrior?

Strong, united families are not only good for our children, they’re a refreshing and beautiful reflection of God’s glory in the world.

Because families are worth fighting for . . .

In the Bible verses about family that we find throughout the Scripture, the family is often seen together as one unit in blessing, responsibility, and punishment.

Though there are not a lot of quotes that speak of the entire immediate family in one passage, there are some, and they provide quite a bit of insight.

We have done our best to gather 20 of the most relevant family related passages in the biblical text for understanding how God sees the family and what is expected of a family. These Scriptures on family are great for study or reflection.

Scripture about Family

“Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.”

“but he raises up the needy out of affliction and makes their families like flocks.”

“And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families.”

“Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well.”

“For the unbelieving husband is made holy because of his wife, and the unbelieving wife is made holy because of her husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.”

“Meanwhile all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children”

“And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.”

“And Joshua and all Israel with him took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver and the cloak and the bar of gold, and his sons and daughters and his oxen and donkeys and sheep and his tent and all that he had. And they brought them up to the Valley of Achor. And Joshua said, “Why did you bring trouble on us? The LORD brings trouble on you today.” And all Israel stoned him with stones. They burned them with fire and stoned them with stones.”

“if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.”

“They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach.”

“from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,”

“A devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.”

“And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and consecrate them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all. For Job said, It may be that my children have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus Job did continually.”

“To the woman he said, I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.”

“Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”

“And they said, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household. And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.”

“She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

What Do these Scriptures teach us about Family?

In these Bible verses about the family, we find that both the family and having children are a blessing from God.

Colossians 3:18-21 is one of my favorite passages because it describes the proper roles of the man, the woman, and the children in the family relationship that we also find reinforced in other scriptures on family.

The man is supposed to love his wife and children with gentleness and kindness, the woman is to submit to the authoritative role of her husband, and the children are to obey their parents. And Job prayed for his children on a regular basis.

When there is a family unit, they are often effected by the actions of the other family members.

Sometimes the whole family is punished for the sins of the father, and an entire unbelieving family can be sanctified and considered clean simply because one of them is a believer.
