Prayers to pray over my wife

Prayer is an essential part of the believer’s life, Or at least it should be and for the Christian husband prayer is essential for a vibrant and thriving marriage. As the old 1990’s adage goes, What Would Jesus Do? Well, Jesus prayed all the time and would often wake up early in the morning to go off and pray by himself (See Luke 5:16). If Jesus, who is perfect, coveted his prayer time with his father in heaven then we, as men who are to be following His example, should desire it all the more. Jesus also prayed for us, His bride, teaching us as husbands one of the ways we are also to love our wives, through prayer.

Every Christian husband should have prayer as a first resort in any and all situations with their wife. We should be the first to suggest prayer and to lead her in prayer. I admit this is a difficult thing to do, especially when you are in the heat of an argument. The last thing you want to do is stop and try and be spiritual, but it is the very thing that needs to happen. I’ve heard many Christian husbands voice their struggle with praying with and for their wives. This is a major tragedy in the Church that the men do not know how to pray.

Let’s change that!

As Paul would write, “I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands…” – 1 Timothy 2:8

One simple and powerful way to begin to pray for your wife is to pray Scripture over her. When we don’t have the words, let’s go to the Word.

prayers to pray over my wife

Being a wife has been a high honor. I didn’t get married until I was 29, and I longed for the day. I spent many years watching friends move ahead into marriage, while I seemed to stay in a holding pattern of singleness.

prayers to pray over my wife

When I met my husband, and as our relationship progressed, my prayers changed. As I entered my engagement, and then, finally, my marriage, my prayers changed again.

Praying God’s Word has been my go to, no matter what situation I have faced. So, as I have become a wife, and as I have grown in my role, these verses have given me a clear prayer strategy over my role as a helpmeet.

6 Verses to Pray Over My Role as a Wife

For Protection in our Marriage – We live in a world where our marriages are under attack. The number one prayer we should be praying is that our marriages are protected. Our marriages are a picture of the relationship between Christ and the church. It is also a huge picture Satan is trying to attack.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High  will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.  I will say  to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2

For Unity and Patience in our Marriage –  A major thing that will protect us in our marriage is that we are in unity and dealing with one another in patience.

I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, 2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:1-3

To Build Our Husband Up-  Our husbands need us to build them up and encourage them!

Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11

That our Husband can Trust us- Our husband needs to be able to trust us. They need to trust that we will do them good. That they can trust us with the things that they struggle with, and they we will be there to build them up, encourage them, and pray for them  – pushing them to grow closer to Christ!

The heart of her husband trusts in her,  and he will have no lack of gain.  She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. Proverbs 31:11-12

To respect our husbands and to have a meek and quiet spirit- This doesn’t mean we have to be quiet – but it does help us to make sure we are listening first and letting our husband lead!

Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives,  when they see your respectful and pure conduct. Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—  but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.  For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. 1 Peter 3:1-6

For God to Change our Heart- Marriage is sanctifying work. It isn’t all roses and butterflies.  We need God to soften our heart and do a work in us, and through us.

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26

Calling all wives and future wives!  We are in a powerful position to pray for our husbands. Let’s lift them up today before the King of kings and Lord of lords as only we can as their Covenant Partners in marriage. Join me in this powerful prayer for wives to pray over their husbands daily:

Lord Jesus, today I lift my husband up to you. I pray blessing, anointing, and power over him, in Jesus’ mighty name. Lord I ask that you would place a hedge of protection around him. Guide him in all of his ways, speak to him and through him. Help him in his work and as the leader of our home. Lord please give him wisdom he can only receive from you. Help him to recognize it and receive it. I speak favor over him with You and with people. I pray divine inspiration and success over him.

Lord draw him closer and closer to you. Give him a hunger for Your Word and a thirst for prayer. I pray that he would daily seek your face, hear your voice, and work out his own salvation in fear and trembling.

I pray healing over his body and his soul. I break every word curse spoken out against him, in Jesus’ name! May all idle words and curses fall to the ground and their seeds will not bear fruit. I plead the blood of Jesus over my husband, the work of his hands, the perfect will of God for his life, our marriage, and our family. Give him the grace to put you first and obey in all things. Lord, only you know his greatest temptations and the secret petitions of his heart—please meet him at his place of greatest need and lead him in the way everlasting.

I pray that you would draw other men to him that he can relate to and receive from—who love You above anything else in their lives. Allow them to be knitted together as David was to Jonathan. Bring him righteous men of God to study your Word with, pray with, and hold one another accountable.

I ask, Lord, for your grace over my husband to parent our children. Reveal to him Your Father’s heart and show him what our children need from him. Give him the strength and wisdom to represent you well before our children and groom them for a passionate relationship with You and great success in their callings.

Lord, help me to be a respectful and honoring wife to my husband. Reveal to me the special ways that I alone can minister to him. Show me anywhere that I may offend him and not realize it. Give me the grace to help him and love him exactly as you would have me do so. Expose and heal anything in me that is displeasing to you and hindering to my marriage. I humble myself before you and lay myself down– mind, will, and emotions– so I can become more of you, in Jesus’ name.

Satan I command you to retreat from my husband in Jesus’ name. He belongs to the Most High God along with the rest of our household and you hold no claim over us. I take authority over you right now and render you harmless in our lives.

Host of Heaven, I command you to forth now and pull down any strongholds that are hindering my husband or our family. Bring in from the North, South, East, and West everything he needs to fulfill the will of God and provide for our family. Protect him in all of his ways, expose and destroy the plots and plans of the enemy, and make his crooked places straight, in Jesus name.

Father God I thank you for my husband, my covenant partner. Thank you for the holy work that marriage can do in us. Thank you for the blessing of such an intimate earthly relationship. Thank you for the authority you give us to pray for one another. I commit my husband, marriage, family, and self to you, in Jesus’ name. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

Prayers for Your Husband

prayers to pray over my wife

Praising God and praying His will for your spouse is guaranteed to be your most rewarding work as his wife. With these five powerful prayers, you will be arming your marriage with God’s Word and investing in his role as your spiritual leader.

Satisfaction in God Alone

I praise You, the God of all wisdom for husbands. Thank You, God, for knowing the longings of my husband’s heart far better than I do. You know why he hungers for ______ and ______. You know how these yearnings affect his decisions and how those decisions affect our marriage.

You are the God who satisfies the longing soul. You fill the hungry soul with good things. Here is _____’s heart and soul, Lord. I lift him up to You and ask You to fill him with the good You know He needs (Psalm 107:9; Matthew 6:8).

The world offers _____ so many things to temporarily satisfy his needs. Temptations abound, but You are his shield and his defender. Please train him to resist the devil (Psalm 28:7; Psalm 59:9; James 4:7).

I celebrate that You triumph over every one of Satan’s schemes and the scars he has left on my husband’s heart. You are Jehovah Rapha, _____’s Healer. You are the restorer of his soul. Let the balm of Your perfect love and mercy touch the brokenness of his heart (Genesis 50:20; Exodus 15:26; Psalm 23:3; Jeremiah 17:14).

You joined Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, and when they came out unharmed, they didn’t even smell like smoke. Use their courage to inspire ____ to fear You only. I trust You to give him rest and satisfaction while protecting him from harm (Daniel 3:8–30; Proverbs 19:23).

A Man of Your Word

Father, Your Word amazes me. The world is looking for the next “perfect” solution to their problems, and You are always offering it through Your Word. You sent Your Word to deliver, nourish, and counsel us. My heart’s desire is for ______ to feast on Your Word and find It immensely satisfying (Psalm 107:20; Proverbs 3:8; Psalm 119:24; 103).

With Your Word as His source of wisdom, I will rest secure in his leadership of our home. I trust Your Word to fill ____ with the insight he will need for our relationship, his work, and so much more (Ephesians 1:8,17; James 1:5).

Your Word will unite his heart to Yours. His oneness with You will lead his pursuit of oneness with me. Your ways will become His ways. Your faithfulness to me will become His faithfulness to me (1 Corinthians 6:17; Mark 10:8; Galatians 5:23).

Send him an abundance of confidants whose faith in You is bold and courageous. Let them be men who do not lean on their own understanding, but always acknowledge You and Your Word (Psalm 119:63; Proverbs 28:1; 3:5–6).

Humility: The Courage to Admit His Need of God

Thank You, Father for the gift of Jesus and His perfect example of humility. Jesus displayed His love for us with great humility and submissiveness to You. He denied Himself the comforts of heaven to save us. He chose to experience temptations, mockery, rejection, and even death. He rated our needs higher than His own.

You require _______ to love me as Christ loved the church. With great love for ____, I’m asking You to empower him to do this (Ephesians 5:25).

You know the pressure _____ feels to be successful and strong. You know how he is influenced to be self-reliant. You understand his fears and insecurities. He is simply human and at risk of denying his need for You, God. I do not want to see him destroy his life or our marriage because of pride (Proverbs 18:12).

I bring ____ to You, the river of life, and ask You to anoint him with a supernatural portion of Christ’s humility. With it he will be a ready recipient of Your grace. He will be free to boast about his weaknesses to You and wait for You to satisfy his needs with Your strength (Psalm 36:8; James 4:6; 2 Corinthians 11:30, 12:9–10).

You’ve promised that humility is rewarded with riches, honor, and life. Those are gifts I want for my husband, Lord. Help him to let go of any pride and false humility so that he can enjoy the abundant life Jesus died to give him (Proverbs 22:4; John 10:10).

Your Praise on His Lips

There is no one who compares to You, Lord. You are worthy of our spellbound attention (1 Samuel 2:2; Psalm 16:8).

Give ______ eyes to see that You deserve the highest praise. Let him personally experience Your grandeur and strength. Let him live with great conviction that Jesus has authority over all things on earth and in the spiritual realm (Psalm 145:3; Ephesians 1:22).

You inhabit the praises of Your people, and I want ____ to enjoy the comfort and power of Your presence every moment. So, Father, please grant him an irrevocable gift of praising You. Let Your Spirit continually offer up a sacrifice of praise through _____ so that his lips always acknowledge Your name (Psalm 22:3; Philippians 2:10;Hebrews 13:15)

Teach him to praise You in his lowest moments. Train him to exalt Your name during the trials and before the victories. Let his faith in You lead him courageously into our own promised land despite the ominous giants of fear and doubt. Use the psalmists to mentor him in lifting His head to praise Your faithfulness despite his present burdens (1 Corinthians 15:57; 2 Chronicles 20; Numbers 13–14; Psalm 43:5).

Transform His Wife

You have promised _____ that a wife is a good gift from you. I want to be an excellent wife to my husband, one who consistently brings him honor (Proverbs 18:22, 12:4).

You know every one of my weaknesses and how they are impacting my role as ____’s helpmate. Lead me, Lord, to recognize the ungodliness hiding in my will, my expectations, and how I express my emotions. I want to surrender them to You for healing. Show me where I am investing my attention in things that will deteriorate my relationship with _____ (2 Corinthians 12:9–10; Luke 12:2; 2 Corinthians 4:18; Ephesians 1:8,17).

Let the power of Your Word transform my motives. Coach me relentlessly to be a wife who respects her husband in word and deed. Cause Your tenderness, gentleness, kindness, and humility to become my own (Romans 12:2; Ephesians 5:22–24; Colossians 3:12).

I want to be a content wife who does not harass my husband with quarrels and fretfulness. Please use me to create a peaceful home for him. Use me to encourage him, bear his burdens, and reflect Your extravagant love for him (Hebrews 13:5;Philippians 4:11–12; 2 Thessalonians 3:16; 1 Thessalonians 5:11; Galatians 6:2;Ephesians 3:18–19).

May our souls feast on only on You (Psalm 63:5).

I pray these things with complete confidence in Jesus and Your Spirit at work in our marriage. Amen.
