Prayers for overcoming addiction are scriptural based prayers designed to break the backbone of any addiction. If you are addicted to drugs, alcohol, cigarette, sex, gambling or something else and you are looking for a way out or maybe you are just searching for prayers to pray for a loved one who is addicted to one thing or the other, here is a list of prayers that you can pray while trusting in God to bring total deliverance.
Spiritually speaking, most of the things we call addictions today are actually the manifestation of demonic spirit of self-destruction. The demons of addiction enter into someone’s life because the person invited them in the name of pleasure. Perhaps that is the reason why it is usually difficult for the addicted to get out of their addiction. Whatever may be the situation, the name of Jesus is here to set you or your loved ones free.

Praise, Worship and Thanksgiving
Start by singing songs of praise unto the Lord if you know how to sing, if not go ahead and give thanks unto the Lord who is worthy to receive all glory and honour.
- Heavenly Father, I thank you for keeping me alive to this day.
- I thank you almighty God for what you are set to do as I pray about this addiction
- I thank you Jesus for your mercies and faithfulness.
- Everlasting father, I give you praise and honour.
Prayer against Addiction
- Almighty God, I come before you today, please forgive me of every sin of drug addiction, sex addiction, e.t.c, that I have committed against my body (1Corinthians 6:18, 1John 1:9) and against you in the name of Jesus.
- Everlasting father I surrender my life to you, please take total and absolute control of my life as from today in the name of Jesus.
- Father my body, soul and spirit I commit into your hand, please cleanse me with the blood of Jesus in the name of Jesus (1John 1:7).
- It is written, “call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee and thou shall glorify me” (Psalm 50:15). Father, deliver me from evil spirit of addiction to (name your addiction e.g. alcohol) that I have invited to my life in the name of Jesus.
- I renounce and reject every spirit of addiction to (name your addiction e.g. drug). Heavenly father uproot all form of addiction to (name your addiction e.g. drug) from my life in the name of Jesus (Matthew 15:13).
- Father, remove from me the heart of stone that is panting after (name your addiction e.g. drug) in the name of Jesus (Ezekiel 36:26).
- Father, create in me a new heart and a new spirit that will be addicted to nothing but the word of God in the name of Jesus (Ezekiel 36:26-27)
- Heavenly father, please fill me with the fullness of the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus (Luke 11:13).
- Lord, as I make conscious effort to do without e.g. cigarette, please release to me the supernatural power to hate cigarette and never indulge in it again in the name of Jesus.
- Lord of Host, please deliver me from every spirit of self-destruction that pretend to be addiction in the name of Jesus.
- Heavenly Father, you have created me for your glory (Isaiah 43:7), please help me so that I can be use for your glory on this earth in the name of Jesus.
NOTE:
- Please note that the first step towards overcoming addiction is to let Christ dwell in you. The scripture says, in 2Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new”. Without Jesus Christ in your life, you may not be able to overcome that addiction. Here is an opportunity for you to surrender your life to Christ. Please say this short prayer of salvation so that Jesus Christ can begin to live in you.
- I recommend that these prayers be prayed loudly, fervently and consistently until there is a significant change in the life of the addict.

HEAVENLY FATHER, we come before You in total surrender to Your Will because we are weary of the addictions we face. We do not mean to fail You, Merciful Father, but too often we give in to the temptations of the enemy as he entangle us and weigh us down.
Help us, Lord, to exercise self-discipline so we will not be defeated anymore. We will continue to believe that Your love and GRACE will never fail us and Your mercies will endure forever.
Titus 2:11-14 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.
We are healed through Jesus
As we struggle in our various addictions, whether it be in the form of alcohol, drugs, or any other type, we know that we have already been healed by Jesus. Help us to believe and place our complete trust in Him.
We claim freedom and healing as we cling to You, Lord Jesus. We declare that these addictions will not destroy our families or cause further suffering. You are our Comforter and Rock in these difficult times.
Romans 13:14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
DELIVERANCE from the control of all addictions!
We look to You, Jesus because we cannot free ourselves from dealing with and overcoming addictions in our own strength. Because of You, Abba Father, we can build a strong foundation on which to stand.
We declare DELIVERANCE from the control of all addictions! In Jesus’ mighty name, we claim our victory, Amen!

The following prayer can be used for any type of addiction that you may have. It should be said out loud. Each time the temptation to give into the addiction arises say this prayer OUT LOUD with authority!
Dear Lord I now come to you because I confess that I have an addiction to ___________. Lord, please forgive me for continually giving into this wrong habit, I know that it is wrong
and I recognize this. I no longer desire this addiction, I don’t want it, I don’t need it and in the name of Jesus I now break the chains of control it has had on me. I recognize how this evil addiction has stolen my time, my money, my energy, my purity and my peace.
Satan I now command that you leave me and my family in Jesus name. You have no power over me. You are the father of addictions and I no long want any part of you. I now cover my mind, my thoughts, my body and my actions under the powerful blood of Jesus Christ.
Heavenly Father I humbly beseech you that I would receive the healing I need so that I no longer need this addiction to fulfill me. I now choose to submit myself, my mind and my body to the Lord Jesus Christ. I refuse to continue to be a slave to _________________. By the power of the Holy Spirit I will continue to fight this addiction with all that is within me. I now confess that it is God’s will for me to be free from this addiction. In Jesus name I pray. amen
Each time the temptation returns simply say:
_________________(name the former addiction) you have no power over me. I am a child of God. This addiction no longer has any power over me. Jesus took this addiction to the cross. Therefore it cannot belong to any part of me. I am free of all addictions in Jesus name.
Each morning say this out loud: “Drugs, alcohol, food, caffeine,cigarettes, porn, _________________ you have no power over me for God has given me power over all things.”

Here is a prayer to pray over anyone suffering with Drug addiction.
Some biblical scholars argue whether or not Drug addiction is of Human Nature or of Demonic nature. We aren’t going to weigh in on this argument. The fact is, no matter what causes the addiction- Freewill/Devil or both, our friends and family members need our prayers and the Lord’s help.
We ask that you pray this prayer over your loved one, inserting his or her name where prompted, and read aloud for all of creation to hear you. We have prayed over this prayer and are in agreement with you. The bible clearly states that when two or more people are present, the Holy Spirit is there and active. We have prayed for you and over this prayer and we believe the Holy Spirit will respond to your prayer and cries for help.
We say Amen to your prayer. Lets Pray:
Father God, we thank you for all of creation and we thank you for the gift of our Family, Friends and Loved ones in our lives. We thank you that we can be a blessing to them, and that they can in return can be a blessing to us when needed. We thank you for the gift of Jesus Christ, and also for the sacrifice of Jesus for all of our sins. We praise You God, Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ.
Lord, you as our creator, we trust in your name so we call for your help day and night. Lord, you know how I feel every moment when I think of (Name Here). It hurts to see (Name Here) being ill both physically and mentally from the effects of drugs.
Heavenly Father I lift up (Name Here) to you and ask for mercy to give (his/her) life back and to show (Name Here) that through Your Mercy and Grace they can live a clean life again. Help (Name Here) hit rock bottom Lord so this vicious cycle of abuse will stop. Open (Name Here)’s heart to the truth and take away the confusion of this world and remove the influence of the Devil and his Demons that might have a stronghold in (Name Here)’s life. We acknowledge that some addictions are of Human nature, but with some God, we acknowledge that the enemy is trying to destroy a person or household.
God place Your loving arms of protection around (Name Here), and surround (Name Here) with a battalion of Guardian Angels. Lord God, I believe that the Army of Heaven is greater than the Army of darkness and I believe that (Name Here) will overcome any satanic influence in their life.
Remove those enablers from (Name Here)’s life. Remove those who perpetuate the use of drugs, or have an influence on (Name here)’s life. Surround (Name Here) with only clean, good, wholesome, God fearing people who positively support them- not seek to drag them down.
Acts 10:38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
Lord Jesus, help (Name Here) to be brave and not give up. When (Name Here) is weak, lift (him/her) up. Increase their faith and allow them to know that You will be her to save (him/her) and that You have a plan for (Name Here) because You are a loving and merciful Christ and God. I pray that (Name Here) will come to You and ask for Your help, and that You WILL answer Father.
Matt 7:7-8 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
I believe You Jesus, though Your stripes can and will deliver everyone who is trapped in this living nightmare of addiction. God take away and break the addiction to prescription pills, street drugs (Name known drugs here), Alcohol and Marijuana.
Place conviction in their hearts, not condemnation, and clear a path to correction in their lives and healing through Your Love, Hope, Faith and Forgiveness and Grace. Expose (Name Here) to the calling on (his/her) life. Work thought their freewill and allow them to be real with the people in their lives, and allow (Name Here) to be real with (his/her)self.
Isaiah 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,and with his wounds we are healed.
Lord, open (Name Here)’s heart, body, soul and spirit to let go of any other addictions in their life that could also strengthen the addiction to drugs, be it sex, anger, control, lying, shopping- whatever takes their focus from You Father God. Lord Jesus, lead them out of the darkness. Get them the help they need to get and be with them though the process, and while they fight their freewill, allow (Name Here) to stay clean.
Acts 5:16 There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringing sick folks, and them which were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed every one.
I also pray that You give me peace that surpasses understanding, as I continue to try and deal with this situation. Allow the Holy Spirit to flow through me and give me wisdom and understanding. Allow the peace of Christ to come over me, and that the knowledge You Father are actively working on this. Jesus be my peace, strength and rock.
Allow us to stand up for what is right with our loved one and not enable them to continue this addiction. Let my claiming their prayer over (Name Here) be a catalyst for Your action in their life. And allow me the knowledge of when to step away and allow them to hit bottom, if that is a part of your plan for their life.
Also Father God, I ask that you be with every Father, Mother, Sister Brother, Son, Daughter, Close Family member, Friend who is crying out to you for their loved ones addiction recovery. We acknowledge Lord that this may take time, so allow me and those praying for our loved ones, friend and family- strength and conviction to hold the course and allow you to work in Your time.
Lord we claim:
Mark 11:22-24 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God. For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith. Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
1 John 5:14-15 “And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
Acts 4:29-30 And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
Thank you Father God for hearing to our petitions for our Family, Friends and Loved ones that are suffering from addictions. And thank your for hearing my petition laid before Your Throne in the Throne room of Heaven for (Name Here) my (relation to you).
