A Short Prayer for a Child

Strength and wholeness. I shall run and not be weary. I shall walk and not faintCome Gracious Spirit, Heavenly Dove,
With light and comfort from above.

Be Thou our Guardian, Thou our Guide,
Stay close by every child’s side. Amen!

Prayers for Children in Trouble

There are times in life when are children may stray from the Lord’s path. What follows are prayers for children who have lost their way, and need God’s guidance and blessings.

Rebellious Youth

Dear Lord, you have witnessed the rebelliousness of youth since the very beginnings of time. You understand a parent’s anguish and helplessness over the actions of his child.

Please help us to transform our anger and frustration into loving care for our child who has gone astray. Help us begin to mend our broken fences and heal our broken hearts. Bless our child and also help him to mend the error of his ways. Help and bless us all to do right in Your name and restore us to peace and tranquility.

“Forgive the rebellious sins of youth …”

Child of The Light

Blessed is the Child of Light
Who doth seek his heavenly Father
For he shall have eternal life.
He that dwelleth in the secret place
Of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow
of the Almighty.
For he shall give his Angels charge over thee
To keep thee in all thy ways.

Know ye that the Lord hath been
Our dwelling place
In all generations.
Before the mountains were brought forth,
Or ever he had formed
The earth and the world
Even from everlasting to everlasting,
Hath there been love
Between the Heavenly Father
And his children.

And how shall this love be severed?
From the beginning
Until the ending of time
Doth the holy flame of love
Encircle the heads
Of the Heavenly Father
And the Children of Light:
How then shall this love be extinguished?

For not as a candle doth it burn,
Nor yet as a fire raging in the forest.
Lo, it burneth with the flame
Of Eternal Light,
And that flame cannot be consumed.

Prayers for Children Who Are Angry or Depressed

Here is another prayer found in an out-of-print prayer book for a child that is upset or facing a difficult situation.

My Greatest Gift

Heavenly Father, my child is your greatest gift,
and my biggest challenge!
I know my child is truly distressed,
and yet I am at my wit’s end to find a peaceful resolution.

I feel helpless and frustrated.
I ask myself, What would my Heavenly Father
do in His infinite wisdom and beneficence?

Lord, come into my heart and mind,
and share Your loving wisdom with me!
Help my child to heal his pain, and help me
to become as loving and wise a parent, as You are for us
Your children. Thank You Lord, for
hearing me and coming to my aid! Bring your loving Peace to me and my child today.

Amen.

The Kingdom of the Heavenly Father

My children, do you know that the Earth
And all that dwells therein
Is but a reflection of the
Kingdom of the Heavenly Father?

And as you are suckled and comforted
By your mother when a child,
But you go to join your father in the fields
When you grow up,
So do the Angels of the Earthly Mother
Guide your steps
Toward him who is your Father,
And all his holy Angels,
That you may know your true home
And become true Sons of God.

While we are children,
We will see the rays of the sun,
But not the Power which created it;
While we are children,
We will hear the sounds of the flowing brook,
But not the Love which created it;
While we are children,
We will see the stars,
But not the hand which scatters them
Through the sky,
As the farmer scatters the seed.

Only through the Communions
With the Angels of the Heavenly Father,
Will we learn to see the unseen,
To hear that which cannot be heard,
And to speak the unspoken word.

Prayers for sick children

There are few things in life that are more difficult than dealing with a sick child. As a parent, our children’s wellbeing is what we care about most in the world.

The following are prayers for children dealing with an illness.

Bring Healing to Our Child

Lord, you love our child as You love all children,
Bring healing to our child who is not well.
Stay by his side and comfort him through this trying time.
Keep us ever mindful of Your loving presence
Bless us with Your powerful healing and comfort us also.
Thank You for hearing our prayer!

Restore My Child to Health

O Lord God, I come to You for help and succor.
You have afflicted my child .
Help me to understand that You mean well.

Give me grace to bear my child’s affliction with patience and strength.
Bless me, O Father, and restore my child to health.
Do not forsake us, but give us an assurance of Your loving Kingdom.
Bless this illness to me and my child , and help us both to be better children of Yours because of it.
In the name of Your Holy Son Jesus Christ. Amen!

Prayers for Children to Learn

These are good introductory prayers for children to learn. They are relatively short and they also rhyme making them easy to remember and easy to say.

They can be said in the morning or before bed.

Come Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, come
Let thy bright beams arise,
Dispel the darkness from our minds,
And open all our eyes.

Revive our drooping faith,
Our doubts and fears remove,
And kindle in our breasts the flame
Of everlasting Love. Amen!

A Child’s Morning Prayer

Lord, I awake and see your light,
For You have kept me through the night,
To You I lift my hands and pray,
Keep me from sin throughout this day,
And if I die before it’s done,
Save me through Jesus Christ, Your Son.

Look Upon a Little Child Child’s Morning Prayer

Lord, look upon a little child,
By nature sinful, weak and wild;
O lay Thy gracious hands on me,
And make me all I ought to be.

Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
Look upon a little child;
Pity my simplicity
Suffer me to come to Thee.

O supply my every want
Feed this young and tender plant
Day and night my keeper be,
And every moment watch round me. Amen!

prayers for children at school

It’s that time of year again – time for us moms to buy our kids fresh new school supplies, time to purchase exciting new curriculum and books for the upcoming school year, and don’t forget that amazing new fall wardrobe that will be way too warm to wear for another couple of months. 😀

These are just a few of the basic essentials that our children need when heading back to school – whether it’s homeschool, public school, or private school.

But let’s not forget the most important essential for our kids: prayer.

Nothing can take the place of a mother covering her children in prayer on a consistent basis.

James 5:16 (AMP) says, “The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man {or mom} makes tremendous power available – dynamic in its working.”

Whose prayers will be more earnest and heartfelt for your children than your own?

A couple of years ago, I wrote the following Scripture-based prayers to help moms (and dads) pray over their children. (Homeschool moms, if you’d like the whole shebang, then click here for the Ultimate List of Prayers for Your Homeschool.)

Whether you educate your children at home or send them off to school each day, the following prayers will be a good starting point.

10 Back-to-School Prayers for Your Kids

Please Note: This is not a legalistic list of prayers you must pray every day. Instead, it is meant to give you a scripturally sound springboard for praying over your own kids.

Remember that the Greater One lives inside you (1 John 4:4).  He knows your children and the situations they face each day, and He has all the answers. Never ever ignore or disregard His leading, His wisdom, or His inspiration by praying out of your own knowledge and mental ability. Always acknowledge His lordship and guidance.

Take these scriptural prayers, along with the leading of the Holy Spirit, and pray them over your children as often as you feel led.

1. Learning
Father, I pray that You help our children to grasp hold of what they need to know and learn. I ask You to give them the aptitude for understanding and wisdom. Thank You that they have the mind of Christ and that their memory is blessed. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Daniel 1:17, 20 AMP; 1 Corinthians 2:16 KJV; Proverbs 10:7 KJV)

2. Knowledge & Understanding
Father, I ask You to help my children become well versed in every branch of learning, gifted with knowledge and good sense, and to be quick to understand. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Daniel 1:4 NLT, NKJ)

3. Wisdom & Discernment
Father, I pray that my children become skillful in all wisdom and discernment, and competent to stand and serve in places of leadership and authority. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Daniel 1:4 AMP)

4. Ability
Father, I ask You to give my children ability, understanding, intelligence, and knowledge. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Exodus 31:3 AMP)

5. Favor
Father, just as Jesus grew in favor with You and with man, I ask that my children would grow in favor with You and with man. I thank You that they are surrounded with Your favor everywhere they go. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Luke 2:52 NIV; Psalm 5:12 NIV)

6. Strength
Father, I pray that my children will realize and understand that they can do all things through Christ who strengthens them. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Philippians 4:13 KJV)

7. Peace
Father, I pray that all my children will be disciples taught of You and obedient to Your will, and that their peace and undisturbed composure will be great. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Isaiah 54:13 AMP)

8. No Fear
Father, I ask you to help my children realize that You have not given them a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (2 Timothy 1:7 KJV)

9. Safety & Protection
Father, I thank You that my children dwell in the secret place of the Most High and abide under the shadow of the Almighty. You are their refuge, their fortress, their God, in You will they trust. No evil shall befall them, neither shall any plague come near their dwelling. You give Your angels charge over them to keep them in all their ways. They call upon You and You answer them. You are with them in trouble and deliver them. With long life You satisfy them and show them Your salvation! In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Psalm 91 KJV)

10. Godly Friendships/Relationships
Father, I ask You for godly, loyal friends for my children. Friends who love purity, who are pure in heart, and gracious in speech, friends that will sharpen them and love them at all times. In Jesus’ Name, Amen. (Proverbs 17:17 KJV, NLT; Proverbs 22:11 AMP; Proverbs 27:17 KJV)

Locked doors and lock-down drills bring fresh emotions to the surface during parent-teacher conferences and morning drop-off lines. The realistic worries of a modern parent are the stuff of fictional horror stories. How do we get past the lump in our throats as we say goodbye for the day? Focused prayer allows us to cope with the broad band of threats to our children’s safety without smothering their ability to be a productive part of society.

1. Pray against physical harm.

“Always pray and never give up.” (Luke 18:1)

Make a daily habit out of praying for their physical protection from cuts, bruises, fist-fights, bike crashes, abduction, abuse, and addiction. The reality of child trafficking should make every parent overly-cautious. The fact that cough meds have to be purchased with an ID is a red flag to parents to be aware. The rampant problem with bullying in this country proves abuse is just as prevalent outside the home.

2. Pray that school fulfills its purpose – giving your child an education.

“Learn them.” (Duet. 5:1)

The most powerful way to pray is by quoting God’s Word, and I believe it’s important to memorize Scripture for that purpose and beyond. In a transcendent way, this verse also illuminates the importance God places on learning. He created a world to discover and knowledge to be attained. Classrooms can be packed and distracting, making it hard for students to focus and teachers to teach. Mandated testing doesn’t always align with a child’s actual capacity of knowledge.

3. Pray for your child’s influences.

“He is always listening.” (Psalm 34:15b)

God ears pick up every conversation our kids have. Pray to Him in recognition of what He already knows. When learning is swallowed up by the social scene, academics aren’t the only thing at risk. Our children’s friends’ will eventually have more influence than we do. Tragically, much of what we are praying for here today comes down to friendships and social skills.

Please pray with me:

Father, Praise You for the opportunity to be mothers and fathers. You craft each life with importance. Every one equally loved by You, our faithful and loving Father. We know that You have a purpose for each life You draft, and praise You that we get to be a part of that purpose.

Thank You for every day they hop into the car or off the school bus safely returned to us. The joys of parenthood are as abundant as the worries. We worry about our kids, God. School should be a safe place for them to learn, grow, and foster the friendships You designed us to crave. But the world is broken, and school isn’t safe. There are lock-down drills that send teachers to dark corners to huddle with their students. Bless the teachers that fight back their own fear to risk their lives for our children.

Schools have been attacked. Gunshots have filled hallways and forever changed the way we feel when we say goodbye to our kids each morning. Be with us as we struggle to maintain composure on the days the depth of reality is too much for us to swallow.

God, there is a reason You tell us to have faith like that of a child. They are bursting with curiosity and full of love. Protect their innocence and preserve the spark in their eyes from the darkness of the world. Let them be little lights to their parents and teachers. Allow them to grow and have a fair opportunity to learn.

Father, we confess our worry and our fear to You today. You tell us not to worry, but it is so hard not to cry when we think of what other parents have had to suffer on account of the tragedy we prepare to face everyday. Comfort their hearts in a special way.

Bless our children and keep them safe from physical harm. Protect them from abuse, abduction, child trafficking, and addiction. Guard their hearts from the devil’s schemes, and protect their minds from things that are not appropriate for their eyes to see and their ears to hear. Bless them with hearts of compassion for their fellow students and teachers. May they be kind on the playground and quiet in the hallways. Protect our children from gossip and bullying. May they know and hear Your voice louder than all the others.

Godly friends are important, and we pray today that You bless our children with those friends. May their friendships be innocent and light, and may the be filled with kindness, understanding, and compassionate consideration for one another.

God, it’s hard to let go of our kids, and send them out into a world that is so unstable and so volatile. But You are bigger than all of our worries. You are bigger than our worst fears. Send Your Holy Spirit to quicken in our hearts as we seek You in Your Word and pray to You for comfort. Remind us that our children are Your children, and that You love them infinitely more than we do. You love us, and them, so much that You sent Your Son Jesus to die on a cross. In the most cruel way to die, the Savior of the World hung there for us. For all of us. My we always cling to the cross for our hope, and light the path for our children to, as well. In Jesus Name, Amen.
