Prayers for bereavement

Dearest Jesus, who wept at the death of your friend

and taught that they who mourn shall be comforted,

grant us the comfort of your presence in our loss.

Send Your Holy Spirit to direct us

lest we make hasty or foolish decisions.

Send Your Spirit to give us courage

lest through fear we recoil from living.

Send Your Spirit to bring us your peace

lest bitterness, false guilt, or regret take root in our hearts.

The Lord has given.

The Lord has taken away.

Blessed be the name of the Lord.

Amen.

O sweet mother Mary,

who knew the sadness of mourning those your heart loved most,

Jesus, your Son,

and Joseph, your devoted spouse,

pray for us in our time of loss.

Amen.

Comfort

Isaiah 66:13  As one whom his mother comforts,  so I will comfort you;   you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.

Matthew 5:4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the LORD,  and he will sustain you;he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

He leads me beside still waters

Psalm 23

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures.He leads me beside still waters.He restores my soul.He leads me in paths of righteousness  for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil,for you are with me;your rod and your staff,they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me

in the presence of my enemies;you anoint my head with oil;my cup overflows.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow meall the days of my life,and I shall dwell in the house of the LORDforever.

Hope In Eternal Life

John 11:25-26  Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

John 14:1-3 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

John 6:35-40 Jesus said to them,  “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.  All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. ForI have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me,  that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, butraise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father,  that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Peace

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Christian Quotes About Bereavement

“Bereavement is the sharpest challenge to our trust in God; if faith can overcome this, there is no mountain which it cannot remove.”  ~ William Ralph Inge

“The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing… not healing, not curing… that is a friend who cares.”  ~ Francis Bacon

“No man who is fit to live need fear to die. To us here, death is the most terrible thing we know. But when we have tasted its reality it will mean to us birth, deliverance, a new creation of ourselves. It will be what health is to the sick man; what home is to the exile; what the loved one given back is to the bereaved. As we draw near to it a solemn gladness should fill our hearts. It is God’s great morning lighting up the sky. Our fears are the terror of children in the night. The night with its terrors, its darkness, its feverish dreams, is passing away; and when we awake it will be into the sunlight of God.”  ~ Thomas Fuller

“Oh, when we are journeying through the murky night and the dark woods of affliction and sorrow, it is something to find here and there a spray broken, or a leafy stem bent down with the tread of His foot and the brush of His hand as He passed; and to remember that the path He trod He has hallowed, and thus to find lingering fragrance and hidden strength in the remembrance of Him as “in all points tempted like as we are,” bearing grief for us, bearing grief with us, bearing grief like us.”  ~ Alexander MacLaren

“This day, my God, I hate sin not because it damns me, but because it has done Thee wrong. To have grieved my God is the worst grief to me. “ ~ Charles Spurgeon

prayers for bereavement

Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thyy Kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread.
Forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

God, gant me the courage to change the things I can change,

the serenity to accept those I cannot change,

and the wisdom to know the difference,

But God, grant me the courage not to give up on what I think is right,

even though I think it is hopeless.

St Francis of Assisi***************************

Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is despair, hope;

where there is darkness, light;

and where there is sadness, joy.

O Diving Master,

grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

to be understood, as to understand;

to be loved, as to love;

for it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.

St Francis of Assisi****************************

Dear Lord,

I may not see the sun and moon lose thier light.

I may not witness rivers turn red, or stars fall from the sky.

Yet there are times when my world becomes unhinged

and the foundations of what I believe crack and dissolve.

Give me the grace to believe that Your power is at work

in the turmoil of my life.

Lead me to remember that Your power is greater than all evil,

and though the world may rock and sometimes break,

it will in time be transformed by Your Love.

For The Absent

God, whose fatherly care reaches to the uttermost parts of the earth: We humbly beseech you graciously to behold and bless whom we love, now absent from us. Defend them from all dangers of soul and body; and grant that both they and we, drawing nearer to you, may be bound together by your love in the communion of your Holy Spirit, and in the fellowship of your saints; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

****************************

For Those We Love

Almighty God, we entrust all who are dear to us to your never-failing care and love, for this life and the life to come, knowing that you are doing for them better things than we can desire or pray for; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Lonely PeopleLoving God,

there are times in each life

when there is no one.

No one with whom to share

a word,

a laugh,

a sad rememberance,

a gentle touch,

a fond embrace,

a kiss of love.

Bless each on who suffers

from such loneliness.

Enrich life with a friend

or gentle stranger

who will apend a moment

noticing

and loving.

In those times

your love shines through,

the world is reborn,

and Christ is known.

So be in!

Amen.

Prayer to Do Good

Forgive me, most gracious Lord and Father, if this day I have done or said anything to increase the pain of the world. Pardon the unkind word, the impatient gesture, the hard and selfish deed, the failure to show sympathy and kindly help where I had the opportunity, but missed it; and enable me so to live that I may daily do something to lessen the tide of human sorrow, and add to the sum of human happiness.

~ F. B. Meyer ~

Prayer to Do What’s Right

O Almighty and Everlasting God, Creator of Heaven, Earth, and the Universe, help me to be, to think, to act what is right, because it is right, Make me truthful, honest, and honorable in all things; make me intellectually honest for the sake of right and honour and without thought of reward to me, Give me the ability to be charitable, forgiving, and patient with my fellow men. Help me to understand their motives and their shortcomings, even as thou understandest mine! Amen.

~ Robert E. Lee ~****************************

For Times of Fear

Almighty God, the Refuge of all that are distressed, grant unto us that, in all trouble of this our mortal life, we may flee to the knowledge of Thy loving kindness and tender mercy; that so, sheltering ourselves therein, the storms of life may pass over us, and not shake the peace of God that is within us. Whatsoever this life may bring us, grant that it may never take from us the full faith that Thou art our Father. Grant us Thy light, that we may have life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

~ George Dawson ~****************************

Prayers for Those Who MournBless those who mourn, eternal God,

with the comfort of your love

that they may face each new day with hope

and the certainty that nothing can destroy

the good that has been given. May their memories become joyful,

their days enriched with frienship,

and their lives encircled by your love.

Amen.

~ Vienna Cobb Anderson ~****************************

I Look to Thee in Every NeedI look to Thee in every need, and never look in vain;

I feel Thy strong and tender love, and all is well again.

The thought of Thee is mightier far than sin and pain and sorrow are.

Discouraged in the work of life, disheartened by its load,

Shamed by its failures or its fears, I sink beside the road.

But let me only think of Thee and then new heart springs up in me.

Thy calmness bends serene above, my restlessness to still;

Around me flows Thy quickening life, to nerve my faltering will.

They presence fills my solitude, Thye providence turns all to good.

Enfolded deep in Thy dear love, held in Thy law, I stand;

Thy hand in all things I behold, and all things in Thy hand.

Thou leadest me by unsought ways, and turn my mouring into praise.

~ Samuel Longfellow ~****************************

Teach Us to Love

O God, perfect us in love, that we may conquer all selfishness and hatred of other; fill our hearts with Thy joy, and shed abroad in them Thy peace which passeth understanding; that so those murmurings and disputing to which we are too prone may be overcome. Make us long-suffering and gently, and thus subdue our hastiness and angry tempersm and grant that we may bring forth the blessed fruits of the Spirit. to Thy praise and glory, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
