Prayers for grandmothers who passed away

by Pearl (Ireland)

my amazing granmother passed away in march and i know she still needs our prayer to help guide her to heaven, please please please help me pray for her as others in my family dont pray like I do, I pray everyday have been praying since I was a child. I need God to call her into the light as I am so afraid she is suffering because not enough people on Earth are praying for her. She comes to me in my dreams all the time and lets me know she is waiting for heaven. She showed me the place she is in and its not nice, in one dream she pointed to the gates far far ahead which was heaven. and there were so many other people/souls there too but they were all travelling to and waiting at these gates.

Please help me pray for my grandmother so she can be in heaven with God and so she can meet my Grandad once again. Im sure she will look over you from heaven for helping her. She has always been a generous lady. thank you everyone for taking the time to read this, I will pray for you all. Please pray for both my Granmother and Grandad. thank you xxx

If your Grandma suffered from an illness that left her in pain before her passing, this beautiful poem offers some comfort; she is no longer in any pain and is in God’s loving arms.

God Saw You Getting Tired

Unknown Author

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around you and whispered,
“Come to Me”

With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you pass away
and although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay.

A golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best

She’s in the Sun, the Wind, the Rain

By Christy Ann Martine

She’s in the sun, the wind, the rain,
she’s in the air you breathe
with every breath you take.
She sings a song of hope and cheer,
there’s no more pain, no more fear.
You’ll see her in the clouds above,
hear her whisper words of love,
you’ll be together before long,
until then, listen for her song.

She Is Gone

By David Harkins

You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she’s gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

Nanny

By Laura White

Such wonderful memories of Nanny
The Nanny we all used to know
We kept you too long and there waiting
The angels have said you can go
Bright golden gates that are shining
Full of family to bid you hello
So blow us a kiss as you’re leaving
Our sadness we’ll try not to show
Such wonderful memories of Nanny
We all have our favourites you see
As you enter those gates you’ll be thinking
They’re all there thinking of me!

A Wonderful Grandmother

Unknown Author

We had a wonderful grandmother,
One who never really grew old;
Her smile was made of sunshine,
And her heart was solid gold;
Her eyes were as bright as shining stars,
And in her cheeks fair roses you see.

We had a wonderful grandmother,
And that’s the way it will always be.
But take heed, because
She’s still keeping an eye on all of us,
So let’s make sure
She will like what she sees.

My Grandmother

By Victoria L. Payne

In my Rose Garden of memories
I see you standing there
An angel in disguise
Who taught me how to care
I long to hear your voice
for real not in my dreams
I am missing you so much these days
how empty my world seems
People say time heals all wounds
that someday the pain will subside
But Grandma I can tell you
I think they must have lied
The emptiness I am feeling now
is strong and I am weak
These days go by without you
so dreary and so bleak
In my Rose Garden of memories
I know you’ll always be
for though you’re gone
from this mortal world
In my heart you’ll always be

Grandma

By Rob

The words you spoke so wisely
Have never been so clear.
All the lessons that you taught me
Still remain right here.

I am left here wishing
To hear your voice one last time,
Once more to hear you sing
That I am your sunshine.

You told me it would be all right,
But I feel that isn’t true.
The only thing to make this better
Is if I was there with you.

I know this isn’t possible,
But it’s hard to think it so.
I know you’re now not suffering,
But I hate to see you go.

I’d let you wear that fanny pack,
I swear I wouldn’t care,
Just to have you back one more time,
Just to have you there.

I’d give a million dollars,
To read one last email,
To decode that secret message
About treasures from a sale.

I know the pain will slowly leave,
And your memories will stay,
Your time with us was special,
And it is often replayed.

My sunshine was taken,
Now my skies are left grey.
Oh, the things that I would give
For only one more day.

You were more than just a Grandma,
You were my best friend.
My life has changed forever,
But I’ll still love you ’til the end.

My Loving Grandmother

By Nivedeeta Pereira

When I had no shoulder to lean on,
and my eyes were filled with tears.
I had my Nana to count on,
to drive away my fears.

Despite all the wrong I’d done,
when the light I couldn’t see,
Nana was my shining sun,
who gently consoled me.

She always encouraged and inspired me,
to follow my every dream,
she’d tell me that I was not alone,
cause she was my team.

She’d tell everyone about me,
what I was doing, when and how,
she preserved everything I ever gave her,
from the time I was little till now.

Without you nana I am so lost,
my tears just won’t dry,
but I believe your one of gods angels,
you spread your wings and fly.

We are sure you are around us,
in every thing we do,
your one of Gods angels we do trust,
we can see all are wishes come true.

Dear Nana we really miss you,
and wish with us you’d always be,
but since God wants you too,
I’ll keep your memories alive in me.

It gives us comfort to think of our Grandmas enjoying a beautiful, garden-like dreamland after their passing.  This touching funeral poem provides us with that.

Grandmother

Author Unknown

God looked around his garden
and found an empty space.
Then he looked down upon this earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God’s garden must be beautiful
He only takes the best.

Grandma, your life was full of loving deeds,
forever thoughtful of our special needs.
Today and tomorrow, my whole life through,
I will always love and cherish you.

There was magic in grandmother’s touch,
and sunshine in her smile.
There was love in everything she did
to make our lives worthwhile.

We found both hope and courage

Her Smile

Though her smile is gone forever
and her hand I cannot touch
I still have so many memories

If Flowers Grow In Heaven (Modified)

By Dolores M. Garcia

If flowers grow in heaven Lord,
then pick a bunch for me then
place them in my Grandma’s arms
and tell her they’re from me.
Tell her that I love and miss her
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek and
hold her for awhile.

These bible verses from the New International Version (NIV) honours grandmothers and mothers everywhere.  They are beautiful verses to read at a Christian funeral service.

She Shall Be Praised

Proverbs 31: 10, 25-31

Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.
Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.
She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.
She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth no the bread of idleness.
Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.
Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.
Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

When we reach adulthood, we are able to see our Grandma more fully, as a person with a lifetime of her own hopes and dreams, and as a friend.  This next funeral poem is very moving.

A Poem for Grandma

Unknown Author

Grandma, you were just a girl, So many years ago.
You had your loves and had your dreams,
You watched us come and go.

You watched us make the same mistakes,
That you had made before,
But that just made you hold us tight,
And love us all the more.

We haven’t always thought about
The things that you have seen.
To us you’ve just been ‘Grandma’,
No thought of who you’ve been.

But we remember now in love,
Your life from start to end,
And we’re just glad we knew you,
As Grandma, and as Friend.

Weep Not For Me

Unknown Author

Weep not for me though I have gone
Into that gentle night
Grieve if you will, but not for long
Upon my soul’s sweet flight

I am at peace, my soul’s at rest
There is no need for tears
For with your love I was so blessed
For all those many years

There is no pain, I suffer not
The fear is now all gone
Put now these things out of your thoughts
In your memory I live on

Remember not my fight for breath
Remember not the strife
Please do not dwell upon my death
But celebrate my life.

This funeral poem eloquently articulates how difficult it is to accept that Grandma has passed away.  A life without our Grandma is difficult to imagine.

Away

By James Whitcomb Riley

I cannot say and I will not say
That she is dead, she is just away.
With a cheery smile and a wave of hand
She has wandered into an unknown land;
And left us dreaming how very fair
Its needs must be, since she lingers there.
And you-oh you, who the wildest yearn
From the old-time step and the glad return-
Think of her faring on, as dear
In the love of there, as the love of here
Think of her still the same way, I say.

Last Journey

By Timothy Coote

There is a train at the station
With a seat reserved just for me
I’m excited about its destination
As I’ve heard it sets you free

The trials and tribulations
The pain and stress we breathe
Don’t exist were I am going
Only happiness I believe

I hope that you will be there
To wish me on my way
It’s not a journey you can join in
It’s not your time today

There’ll be many destinations
Some are happy, some are sad
Each one a brief reminder
Of the great times that we’ve had

Many friends I know are waiting
Who took an earlier train
To greet and reassure me
That nothing has really changed

We’ll take the time together
To catch up on the past
To build a new beginning
One that will always last

One day you’ll take your journey
On the train just like me
And i promise that I’ll be there
At the station and you will see

That Life is just a journey
Enriched by those you meet
No one can take that from you
It’s always yours to keep’

But now as no seat is vacant
You will have to muddle through
Make sure you fulfill your ambitions
As you know I’ll be watching you

And if there’s an occasion
To mention who you knew
Speak kindly of that person
As one day it will be you

Now i can’t except this ending
And as it’s time for me to leave
Please make haste to the reception
To enjoy my drinks, they’re free!

Losing a grandmother in the family is a traumatic experience. As elders that lead, their presence, life lessons shared are gone and the family is left with only their memorable experiences. To provide the right type of condolences to the individual, the following sympathy messages for the loss of a grandmother are listed below to help you find the right words to share.

(name) brought so many happy moments in our life and left us with a treasure trove of memories. We will never be able to forget him/her. We are praying for you in this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.

Although it’s difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.

As hard as it seems, you will get through this difficult time and emerge stronger. We are always around to help you through this trying period.

At this difficult time of life, my prayers and thoughts are with you. My sincere and deepest condolences for you and your family on the demise of your grandmother.

For every life has a purpose to fill, a purpose which us humans can seldom infer. But she was a gift from heaven, whose purpose was to make this world understand what love, friendship, goodness, and humbleness was all about. Goodness belongs to heaven, and I know she is watching us from there, bestowing her beautiful smile upon us. May her soul rest in peace.

I am extremely saddened by the grieved news of the loss of your mother. I hope you have the strength to go on through this rough time. Your mother left to be with God and is always watching down upon you and blessing you from Heaven.

I cannot even begin to imagine what you’re going through and how difficult all this must be for you. Please know that I am always there for you. Whether to talk or cry or even just sit in silence with.

I was shocked to hear the loss of your grandmother. It’s really sad and my heartfelt sympathies are with you.

It’s the little things, the small, everyday occurrences that you’ll remember. The laughs, the stories, the smiles. And even though it seems like you can never recover from your loss, it is these very memories that will help push the pain away and bring back the smiles.

Life is eternal, and love is immortal, and death is only a horizon; and a horizon is nothing. Save the limit of our sight.

May all the warm and special memories you shared with your grandmother stay with you and bring you comfort through the days ahead.

May beautiful memories sustain you during this time of sorrow, and it makes it easier to bear the pain. I am sorry on the sad demise of your grandmother.

My deepest condolences on the death of your grandmother. In this sorrowful time, may the love of family and friends comfort you.

My heart goes out to you and your family during this difficult loss. Please let me know if there is anything that I can do for you in this trying time.

Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather, openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.

Saying goodbye to grandmother forever is one of the hardest things in life. Such moments are very painful. Please know that we are here for you in such a sad time, and you are there in our thoughts and our prayers.

Sending you sincerest sympathies and condolences on the painful demise of your granny. She was a lady of warm presence and beautiful aura. Her thoughts and presence would forever live deep inside our hearts. Just a message to let you know that we are with you during this difficult time.

The best way to remember someone it to do it with a smile on your face. You will not be able to do it soon but at least try and this will make the soul of the one who has gone happy.

The kind and gentle person he was, I’m sure the one who made him, realized how special he was, to be left in the midst of this cruel world. He belongs to a place that is kind, a place that is away from all the hassles of this world. May his spirit experience celestial peace and heavenly bliss.

Through this card, I offer my condolence wishes for the loss of your mother in law. Your mother in law was a great person and is up there in Heaven blessing you with all the strength to overcome the loss.

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.

We know that no words can help ease the pain and loss that you are feeling right now. You are in our every prayer and thought.

When we lose someone we love, it seems that time stands still.

Whom the heart of man shuts out, sometimes the heart of God takes in, and fences them all round about, with silence ‘mid the world’s loud din.

Your granny was an angel. She always spread happiness and joys in other’s life. Her demise fills our heart with sadness; please know that we are with you during these sad moments. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies and condolences.

Your granny would be remembered till eternity! May GOD rest her soul in peace. May the love and the memories that you shared with her comfort you in the finest way. Accept out heartfelt condolences on her loss.

You’re not around, but your memories still remain captured in our hearts. You were like an angel that came and made our lives beautiful, and now that you are in heaven, we know you are doing the same.

The below infographic provides a guide to cremation burials and ceremonials. Traditionally, a viewing of the casket is performed followed by a personal and religious ceremony. A cremation is done and than the remains are presented to the family. Sometimes, non ceremonial cremations are done where no viewing is performed and the remains are just presented. A scattering or urn is done based on the wishes of the deceased.
