Praying for somebody who is sick can really affect the health of the person (for whom prayer is being made) in a positive way. Many religions give importance to the prayer for surgery along with the medical treatment.

Importance of prayer for surgery:

When you’re loved one is passing through any kind of surgical procedure then you do not rely only on the doctors you must have to pray to the lord who is the only who can give healing. There are many prayers available that can be recited before the surgical treatment of the patient.

Prayer for surgery makes a patient spiritually strong and his faith increases. While reciting a prayer for surgery you can add words for the desired outcomes. You may surrender the outcomes to God. And always thank HIM for all he has given to you. If we do not have faith in God then our prayers are a waste. So our prayers must be ardent.

Here is a prayer when your child is having a surgery:

You will keep in absolute peace him whose mind is steady, because he trusts you. Trust in the lord forever”. (Isaiah 26:3-4)

Categories of prayer for surgery:

If you are in the hospital for your surgery or for your loved ones, you have to rely on the spiritual treatment— a prayer for surgery along with the medical treatment. Prayers are not only needed to patients but to the doctors and nurses also need prayers. Following are the some prayers for surgery:

Prayer for nurses:

The nurses pray to the Lord to get strength and courage to help the patients and their families. They ask the Lord for kindness and sense to understand the needs and pains of the patients. The nurses make prayers for:

  • Patient’s continued health.
  • Patient’s recovery from disease.
  • Prayer for guidance.
  • Prayer for quick recovery of patients.

Prayer for doctors:

Doctors also need prayer while doing surgeries as they are now responsible for the life of a patient. The doctors pray to the lord for the strength and skills to save the precious life of the patient. They pray to the Lord for the skills that can be used to cure the patients as they have trust in the doctors. So the doctors pray for:

  • The guidance
  • The healing power
  • The honesty etc

So you know…. I am not the best when it comes to organized religion.

I would say that I am more spiritual than religious. I do believe there are higher powers that tie us all together. And, I do believe the molecular meatpack, we call our body, offers us a special opportunity to create something meaningful during the seventy or eighty years that most of us traverse the Earth.

Okay. I just wanted to make sure you knew where I was coming from before I dive head-first into the topic of prayer before heart surgery.

RELIGION, PRAYER AND HEART SURGERY

Just before my aortic valve replacement, my Uncle Marc advised me that prayer before surgery was not a bad idea. Marc is more than an uncle to me. Marc is a mentor in many aspects of my life.

So, I took Marc’s suggestion and contemplated the notion of prayer, even religion, before my heart surgery. Looking for answers, I jumped onto Google and immediately learned a lot about the mystical approaches to securing positive surgical outcomes following cardiac procedures. As you might might imagine, the results of clinical studies were mixed on this topic.

Some of the studies suggested positive results of prayer before surgery:

  • A 1993 Israeli survey following 10,000 civil servants for 26 years found that Orthodox Jews were less likely to die of cardiovascular problems than “nonbelievers.”
  • A 1995 study from Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., monitoring 250 people after open-heart surgery concluded that those who had religious connections and social support were 12 times less likely to die than those who had none.

Some of the studies suggest that prayer by third-parties prior to surgery was a non-factor and potentially more harmful:

  • A 2006 Harvard study of more than 1,800 patients concluded that having people pray for heart bypass surgery patients had no effect on their recovery. In fact, patients who knew they were being prayed for had a slightly higher rate of heart surgery patient complications.

GIVEN THE RESEARCH ON PRAYER BEFORE SURGERY, WHAT DID I DO?

As an optimist, I could not see the danger in personally engaging in prayer before surgery. I did not “get religion” prior to surgery but I did spend several quiet moments thinking great, big healthy thoughts for myself and those around me.

I even took it one step further… On the morning of my surgery, I requested that my close friends and family spend a few minutes channeling healthy thoughts to my heart.

I think some members of my support group got a head-start. The night before my heart valve surgery, I was having dinner with Robyn (my wife) at PF Changs Chinese restaurant in Manhattan Beach, California. Just as their famous Chinese lettuce wraps were served, a wave of goodness and warmth covered my chest.

Robyn noticed my face change. She asked me with some concern, “Are you alright?”

I responded, “Something very powerful is happening. I’m not sure how to explain it. But, I’m now ready for surgery. I know that everything is going to be alright. Oh yah, pass the hot sauce.” 🙂

Call me crazy… Call me weird… Call me nuts… Call me anything you like…

But, I will never forget that moment at PF Changs.

I hope that helps share some ideas about the concept of prayer before surgery. I was not going to post this because I know that religion can really turn people on and really turn people off. But, in the end, we are here to learn from each other about all things relating to heart valve surgery. That said, I hope you are okay with this blog.

Keep on tickin!

“God will take care of everything you need.” (Philippians 4:19 The Message)

How do we trust that God will take care of us as He does the birds and the trees? Believing God’s Word will fan the flame of our faith as we live it out in hard circumstances. When the ache of the unknown looms in front us as we place our lives in the hands of surgeons, prayer gives peace to our hearts and physically tired bodies. Use this prayer for yourself, or with friends and family before heading into surgery.

A Prayer for Surgery

Father, praise You for this life. As we prepare for surgery to the body You have given us, many things flow into our minds and out of our hearts as we lie in wait. Yet, You reassure us in Exodus 15:26: “I am the Lord who heals you.”

We have an end picture in our minds as to what “healed” looks like for us, and desperately look to You for assurance that our lives and our pain will be healed. You are above all, see all, know all, and are capable of healing all. When Jesus walked the earth, He healed by the touch of His hand and the sound of His voice. We pray to feel Your healing hand upon us, Lord, and hear Your voice of peace and tranquility boom over the loud pain that throbs through our minds and bodies.

Thank You for a life that is valuable to us and to those around us. We are worth enough to worry about, and thankful enough for the life we’ve been blessed with on this earth to covet our return to it and full restoration of it. With grateful hearts we come to You in praise for the gift of being able to trod this earth and experience Your love.

Forgive us, Father, for doubting our purpose on earth. We confess just how often we run from what You are calling us to do because we feel it is too hard. And now, as we await the outcome of surgery, we feel compelled to reach back and grab every opportunity that has ever passed us by to walk behind Your Son in pursuit of Your will for our lives. Please forgive our disobedience, and lack of respect for Your timing and Your plans. Help us to place our current and future ambitions on bringing You glory, and the love of Your Son to all who know us.

Father, we trust You with our lives. For You promise us: “Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.” (Psalm 30:2)

Bless the surgeons and medical staff that will operate on us. Be with them and equip them to be extensions of Your healing hand. Remain present with me, Lord, even when I fall asleep from the pain medication. Help me to feel Your presence, and remember that You are always with me. Never leaving. Always faithful. Loving me more than I’m capable of understanding.

And now for the hardest part: Truly trusting the outcome of my life in Your hands. For it’s when our plans for healing don’t look the same as Yours that we become frustrated, and faith threatens to pull out of our hearts. Doubt can seep in through the cracks in unexpected circumstances. In those moments, Lord Jesus, strengthen us to remember You. Your ways are not our ways, because only You can claim true love for us. Only You know what is perfect and just in the daily happenings of our lives. Our time here is so fleeting, but our belief in You, Jesus, sets us apart and ensures us life everlasting. Pain free and full of peace.

Help us to hold on to that belief. To hold onto You. As we travel this road of uncertainty, send Your Holy Spirit to inspire our heart’s memory of Your sweet words of promise. Help us to recall and repeat the promises You have given us through Your Word. Be with our families and friends as they worry and wonder what the outcome will be. Inspire Your love in their hearts and assure them that my life is in Your hands.

Father, let all who know me witness my peace in this process, and know that it is from You. Thank You for life, God. Bless and heal me today through this surgery. Whether You bring me through these ailments to restore me upright on this earth, or take me through to You, I trust You… today, and always. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
