A Prayer for Patience & Peace
By Dick Woodward

“Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” – Romans 12:12

Throughout the history of the church, patience has always been considered a great virtue by spiritual heavyweights like Augustine, Thomas a Kempis and Francis of Assisi. Why is patience such an important virtue? For starters, patience is one of the nine fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

In our relationship with God, we might call patience “faith-waiting.” In the Bible we are exhorted to “wait on the Lord” (Psalm 27:14). It takes more faith to wait than most of the real life situations that challenge our walk with God. There are few spiritual disciplines that will focus our faith like those times when all we can do is wait on the Lord. When we are praying for something and receiving no answer, God may be teaching us that there are times when faith waits.

We all eventually find ourselves facing circumstances which are beyond our control. Imagine Paul chained in that awful prison in Rome. Would he find and maintain the peace of God if his formula for peace was to rattle his chains and ‘force it?’ Patience is the supernatural fruit of the Holy Spirit that gives us the grace to accept the things we cannot control.

God, teach us what it means to have faith in silence. When we face trials that are beyond our understanding, help us to find peace. Help me be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer. You set all things in accordance to your time. Remind us to wait patiently, and find peace in your plan.

Omnipotent, Omnipresent Loving Lord, I humbly lay my life before You, for You alone deserve all the praise, honor and glory. Open my eyes, Lord.

Allow me to see all the wonderful things You have done for me. Open my heart to accept You and Your Word daily. Open my mind and allow me to understand Your teachings.

Romans 12:12 – Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer

Romans 15:4 For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

Grant me patience Lord, as I await Your answers to my call. Teach me to be still in the midst of the storms.

Lord,  Your timing is always perfect, never too early and never too late. Knowing that You hold the future, it is definitely worth the wait!

James 1:3  knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience.

Hebrews 6:12 – That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Guide me accordingly, help me to make the right decisions that will only lead me to You. Search me, Oh Lord, for You alone know my heart.

I desire Your Holy presence as I await You patiently, Oh Lord. Bless me with all that I deserve, in Jesus’ precious name I pray, Amen!

Luke 8:15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.

James 5:8 – Be ye also patient; establish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

During my many struggles, I have found that meditating on God’s word helps. Reading, writing or even memorizing helpful Bible verses remind me that God has done it before and will do it again if we just trust Him. These 10 Bible verses about patience always encourage me and I’m sure will help you too.

The below Bible Verses have been quoted from the Life Application Study Bible (NIV).

1. 2 Chronicles 15:7

But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.

Honestly, the first thing that came to my mind when I first read this verse was ‘Well yes, BUT WHEN?’ (Preferably the exact time and place so I can plan my outfit). It felt like this verse was just stringing me along. Understanding this sentence, however, required me to do one thing – to look at my life in retrospect.

Once I did that I started smiling and praising God because I remembered the many times he came through for me in the past. And how the time I had to wait was nothing in comparison to the blessing I received afterward.

2. Galatians 6:9

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Sometimes we may worry that we are putting in way more effort than others and get frustrated. However, God promises us that staying the course and continuing the good work will be worth it.

3. Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Probably one of the most well-known Bible verses of all time, Jeremiah 29:11. It assures us that God hasn’t forgotten about us, but rather that everything we are going through is part of his agenda. And what is even more comforting, is that God will be with us every step of the way, encouraging and supporting us from the front row.

4. Isaiah 40:31

But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

It is no secret that even the strongest person gets tired at times. But that’s when we can tap into the infinite source of power that is God’s strength. Hoping in the Lord in times of difficulties will help us renew our strength and wait for his promises.

5. Hebrew 10:36

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

Jesus didn’t promise us a life without trials and tribulations. Instead, he promised us to be on our side when we face these challenges. This verse beautifully reminds us that there is hope for us if we stand firm in God’s word and live for him.

6. Lamentations 3:25-26

The Lord is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

It is important to remember that God will answer if we seek his presence and ask him for help. Developing a strong prayer life enables us to build a connection to God. It helps us to understand his instructions and gives us peace while waiting.

7. James 5:8

You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near.

Out of the 10 bible verses about patience, this verse is my favorite! Whenever my mind is racing and suggesting all these alternative paths I could take to fulfill my heart’s desires, I remember that standing firm in God’s word means to trust in Him and not give up the moment challenges arise.

8. Psalm 40:1

I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.

Every time I read this verse it brings love and joy to my heart because we are assured that he cares for us.

9. John 13:7

Jesus replied, ‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.

As the author of our lives, God knows the beginning and the end. We must remember the wider perspective and focus our eyes on eternity.

10. Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Have you ever tried to teach a toddler how to write their name? You make them grasp the bottom end of the pen, while you hold on to the top. Their excitement to write on a blank canvas and create a word that describes their unique self-urges them to tighten their grip.

However, only when they allow us to lead their hand they can fabricate their most beautiful depiction of themselves. Through this verse, God asks us to do the same thing. To let go of what we think our lives should look like and allow him to create the most beautiful version of it yet.
