Hedge of protection prayer

One of the most common ways Christians pray for protection, is to ask God to erect a hedge of protection around whatever it is you want to protect.

Lets go over the origin of the hedge of protection, and then learn how to pray for the safety
of the ones we love by invoking the idea of a spiritual hedge to provide safety from evil.

The Hedge of Protection in the Scriptures

There are many instances in the scriptures where
a hedge is described as a means of protection. Perhaps the most famous comes from the book of Job.

After God boasts to the Devil about Jobs goodness, the Devil insists that Job is only good because
God has been protecting job; shielding him from the dangers of the world with a hedge of protection:

” Hast not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side?
Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.”

So, this is the first evidence in the bible that
God can sometimes choose to protect certain individuals.

The language of the hedge is perhaps a little odd for the modern reader. Why a hedge?
Certainly there are better edifices to provide protection than a hedge. Why not a wall with barbed wire?

Yet, this isnt the only instance in the bible where a hedge is described as a good barrier.

“Why hast thou then broken down her hedges, so that all they which pass by the way do pluck her?”

“The way of the slothful man is as an hedge of thorns:
but the way of the righteous is made plain.”

“And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard:
I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof,
and it shall be trodden down:”

This is just the beginning. There are many other examples throughout the bible.

So, why a hedge?

We may not know exactly why, but the difference between a hedge and a wall is that a hedge is alive.

Whereas a wall is erected and slowly deteriorates over time, a hedge is a living thing,
that with proper care and attention will only grow thicker and stronger over time.

I believe that prayer is exactly the care and attention
we need to give in order to receive Gods blessings and protection.

The Hedge of Protection Prayer

How does one pray using the hedge of protection?

Its simple. You simply invoke the hedge when asking for protection from God.

Why do this?

What I like about praying with the hedge of protection is that
it invokes the vernacular of the bible. It shows that Ive read and understood the biblical texts.

Lets go over a sample prayer:

Dear Father,

Thank you for the blessings youve bestowed on me.
You are the protector and the light. In this time of need, my child has been involved
with peers who donot share the Christian values that we hold so dear.
In your name I pray for a hedge around my child to protect her from these evil forces that are at work.
May you bless her and this household and keep us safe in this time of need.

Amen

One of my favorite Christianese expressions! Hedge of protection seems to hardly need an introduction, because it is one of the most popular Christianese expressions.

If you’ve never heard this phrase before,  take 2 minutes and watch this hilarious stand-up comedy bit by Tim Hawkins about the hedge of protection. One of his best bits of all time!

The hedge of protection is typically mentioned during prayer. Christians ask God to put a “hedge of protection” around someone they care about to keep them safe and protect them from harm. When someone is praying, they might even use this phrase like a formula, saying: “God, we pray a hedge of protection around our friend Joe here. Watch over him and keep him safe!” I’m sure the people praying can almost see a protective hedge materializing around their friend.

Praying for a “hedge” reminds me of another popular prayer phrase: laying out a fleece. Fleeces and hedges… if somebody didn’t know that Christianity’s roots began in a rural, agricultural area (such as the near Middle East), it wouldn’t take them long to figure it out, judging by the language we use when we pray.

hedge of protection n. God’s protection over someone. The term is typically used in the prayer formula pray a hedge of protection (see run-on entry below), but it can be used in other ways too (often with verbs such as build, place, put, and remove).

The exact phrase hedge of protection does not appear in the Bible. Hedges are mentioned as secure barriers around vineyards (Isaiah 5:5; Mark 12:1), and Satan refers to God’s protection and favor on Job as “a hedge around him” (Job 1:10). The Job 1:10 reference is the source of the imagery and language of hedge of protection.

Coverdale (1535) was the first Bible translator to use the word hedge in translating Job 1:10: “‘Hast thou not made an hedge about him and about his house, & about all that he hath on euery side?’” The Geneva Bible (1560), kjv (1611), and nearly all English Bibles since then have followed suit.

Home»Family»Hedge of Thorns Prayer for the Unfaithful Spouse

We would like to share with you this hedge of thorns prayer.  This is not the same as a hedge of protection prayer.  The difference is the hedge of protection keeps what is external from coming in while the hedge of thorns prayer keeps what is in from going out.

You should only pray this prayer for people with whom you have a biblical covenant relationship.  So this would be for an unfaithful spouse and you can also use this prayer for a prodigal child, drug addicted child, a child who is keeping company with gang related friends.

This prayer should not be prayed for your boyfriend, or girlfriend or someone whom you have feelings for that is not your spouse.  That would be considered witchcraft because you are not in a covenant relationship with that person.  You also don’t really know God’s will for that person so try not to let your emotions and feelings get control of you.

Likewise if you feel that someone who is not in a covenant relationship with you may be praying this over you, then you want to cut soul ties with them and pray this off of you.

Let’s look at the scriptures that talk about the Hedge of Thorns.  There are actually 2 scriptures in the King James Version- one refers to laziness Proverbs 15:19 (we’ll cover that in a different post) and the other is Hosea 2:6.

We will focus in on Hosea 2:6.  The book of Hosea is about the prophet Hosea and his unfaithful spouse.  This book, while it can be taken literally, can also be looked at figuratively as the Church of Jesus Christ being unfaithful to God and chasing after things (idolatry) and not God.  This is a spiritual unfaithfulness. Therefore if you see your child going after things that are not of God (prodigals, drug and alcohol addicted, bad company) you can use these scriptures to pray for them as well.

Let’s look at the scripture in context…

Hosea 2:5-7 (NKJV) “For their mother has played the harlot; She who conceived them has behaved shamefully. For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers, Who give me my bread and my water, My wool and my linen,  My oil and my drink.’ “Therefore, behold, I will hedge up your way with thorns, And wall her in, So that she cannot find her paths. She will chase her lovers, But not overtake them; Yes, she will seek them, but not find them.  Then she will say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, For then it was better for me than now.’

That’s pretty clear showing that these hedge of thorns keeps the unfaithful from going out and they return to the one with whom they are in a covenant relationship.

Hedge of Thorns Prayer:

Father God, I present to you this day ___________ and ask that you put the hedge of thorns, according to Hosea 2:6, around them to keep them from falling into sin.  Cause them to not find the way of unfaithfulness.  Cause these ungodly desires to not be fulfilled.  May they return to a covenant relationship first and foremost with you, God, and secondly to the covenant relationship that You have ordained from the foundations of the earth.  I pray for grace, patience and peace to guard my heart as I wait on You Lord to bring this prayer to fulfillment.  I pray that You would send away all these ungodly desires.  May _______ lose the desire to go that way, reveal to her/him that this way is destruction and against your will. Give him/her dreams and visions to see that the end is of no good.  I pray that You will season my speech with grace so that I will know what to say and when to say it.  I pray that you will cleanse my heart and root out any seed of bitterness. Give me grace to forgive.  Put a guard over my mouth and show me how I can accommodate the reconciliation and restoration of this covenant relationship.  If I have any responsibility in driving ______ away from you God and from this covenant relationship, please reveal it to me.  Forgive me God and prepare me for their return.  Guide them and me with your Holy Spirit, in Jesus Name, Amen.

If you want us to pray for your unfaithful spouse or your child, please write your prayer request below and we will pray for you and for them.

God Bless You.
