Encouraging scripture for wives

Our lives become shaped and molded by the things we read, eat, watch or hear. Anything we ingest will be digested and become apparent by the way we live, respond and act.

The following five verses have helped shape me as a wife over the years. Take a moment to read the lessons they have taught me, then share a few thoughts below.

5 Bible Verses for Wives

1. The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.” Genesis 2:25

Like most women, I have felt hesitation, insecurity and even shame of my sexuality. This can be caused by painful experiences in our past, sin that we may have participated in, an unhealthy understanding of sex, or the general insecurity that women have regarding their bodies.

But this verse says the man and his wife were naked, and they felt no shame. And to top it off, God called all of His creation very good, unclothed people included. In it’s purest, most intimate form, sex is not meant to bring shame. The Land of the Marriage Bed, is a region designed solely for husband and wife to bless and enjoy one another. Naked and without shame, it’s a place meant for fear to be banished, trust to be established and love grow to new heights.

I share much more on this topic in the second lesson of this Bible study.

2. “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each should look not only to their own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 2:3-5

Let’s be honest, we all have times when our “selfish ambitions” are the reason we do or say things. But, having ulterior motives, trying to weasel, connive and manipulate to get what we want, is the least desirable way to build trust.

Rather, we should look out for the good of the other person, be genuine, transparent, build each other up and encourage each others interests. This means sometimes we put aside our own interests for the good of our spouse.

Having a Christ-like attitude means laying down our own plans and will and picking up whole-hearted honor, encouragement and support for someone else’s.

These ABCs for Christian Marriage are great reminders on how to be an encouragement to your spouse.

3. “Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of their lives.” 1 Peter 3:1-2

This submission thing stinks sometimes. Especially when we know our husband is wrong in something he is doing.

Whether its an unequally yoked marriage, or we just have a hard time seeing things the way he does, what this verse tells wives is that our behavior has a huge impact on our husband. When we live a life that is commendable and honorable, being pleasant mannered toward our husband, we give him a taste of Christ’s goodness.

This can be very hard when we are faced with unkind attitudes or harsh words. But a wise, godly woman knows she is responsible for her own responses*, and does not base them on someone else’s actions.

(*Lesson one of this Bible study elaborates on this concept.)

4. “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your minds on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:1-2

Setting my mind on things above helped me gain a broader perspective of God’s plan. Realizing that God truly is in control of it all anyway, helped me put my trust in Him and not my husband. Thinking on the things of the Lord as directed in Philippians 4:8, helped me get a right heart and new attitude toward my husband.

When Jesus became enough, my husband became more than I dared hope he would be.

5. “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” Luke 18:1

This parable was about a widow woman who relentlessly brought her case before the judge. As wives, we do our most powerful living at the feet of Jesus. Being persistent in prayer and not giving up has proven to be the one most effective thing in my walk as a wife.

These are a few stand out verses for me. What are some Bible Verses that shape you in your walk as a wife?

I compiled 7 encouraging Scriptures for military wives that have helped me during my husband’s current deployment. My husband being away has never been easy, and this deployment has brought along its share of anxiety, but these verses have comforted me and wrapped me in God’s promises. Below I have listed each encouraging Scripture, and why I continuously refer to them every day.

7 Encouraging Scriptures for Military Wives

Romans 12:12 – Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.

I love this verse of scripture because it tells me to be everything opposite of my natural tendencies. Be confident! Be hopeful! Then I reach the word “patient”. Being patient is always easier said than done for me. It is followed by another reminder to keep on praying. For me, the two coincide with each other. I can be patient WHEN I am faithful in prayer. Prayer is my stronghold.

Joshua 1:9 – This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Be strong and courageous! I had to tell myself this every single day in the beginning of my husband’s deployment. There were many times that I wanted to fall to pieces and just hope that someone would come put me back together. Knowing how unrealistic that was, I put on a brave face and eventually I became more brave within. Another wonderful reminder in this passage is to not be discouraged, since He is with me wherever I go! How encouraging! There are days when I feel discouraged that I didn’t get to speak to my husband, or video-chat my husband, or speak with him “long enough”. I would begin to feel discouraged and loneliness crept in. This passage is the perfect reminder that I am not alone! He is my greatest support, and His Will is my desire.

Philippians 4:13 – For I can do everything through Christ, Who gives me strength.

This is a beautiful and popular verse of scripture. One that is pronounced ahead of every circumstance. The same can be applied for deployments. God is my strength. I can endure this temporary separation with His strength. I can endure anything with Him.

Psalm 112:7 – They do not fear bad news; they confidently trust the Lord to care for them.

No fear of bad news? This is a hard one to swallow. My greatest fear during a deployment is fear of bad news. Fear that my husband will be hurt, or worse. I want my heart to be steadfast and trusting, but I need The Lord to suppress those fears and envelop me in His comfort and peace. I pray this every single day.

Isaiah 41:10 – Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with My victorious right hand.

This entire verse is powerful, but what stands out to me in my present circumstance is, “I will help you; I will hold you up…” This is not wishful thinking, this is God’s promise. He helps me every day, and He certainly does uphold me too. I can feel this truth every day of this deployment.

Psalm 16:8 – I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken, for He is right beside me.

I will not be shaken. He is with me. I love to repeat those words frequently during an especially stressful time. I need nothing more than His love and leadership on this journey.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 – Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will become useless. But love will last forever!

It may seem odd that I would add this to my list since these verses are usually written into wedding vows and the like. When I read this, I read something slightly different. I read about my responsibility. This is about my relationship with God. I must be patient for God’s timing, I must be kind with Him, and I must trust in Him. If I do not have my trust completely in Him, what is my love? My love, then, becomes conditional. If I want Him with me in every moment of my life, even after this deployment has ended, I must be committed to real love and what that entails. This verse reminds me of my part. God has promised me all of these things, but I have to trust Him.

I hope these 7 encouraging Scriptures for military wives are wonderful reminders for you as well. Whatever you may be enduring in your life, you are not alone. Christ died on the cross so that these promises could be fulfilled in each of our lives. Go to Him in prayer, in thanksgiving, and remember these scriptures throughout your day.
