Praying for my future spouse was one of the keys to my decision to stay pure as a teen. Ultimately, years later we discovered that my decision to dedicate myself to these prayers coincided with the date of the spontaneous conversion of my Husband-To-Be. A few years ago during a speaking engagement, a woman asked how I pray for my husband now. It’s great how sometimes the Holy Spirit communicates by calling me out in front of a room full of people.
Thankfully I got back in the saddle along with my Bible and prayer journal. I developed a fail-proof, practical plan for praying Scripture over my husband. Once again, I found that my heart would be set afire! Here are some of the verses from my own journal that may benefit you and you
For (future or current) spouse:
General Petitions
- Purity – Colossians 3:5- Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.
Prayer prompt: Ask that your spouse will be pure for all the right reasons: love, knowledge, and affection for Christ. Pray that he/she will know that sin isn’t breaking a rule, but breaking a heart.
- Healing– Psalm 147:3– He heals the brokenhearted, binding up their wounds.
Prayer Prompt: We all have wounds, but God can bring a greater good out of every evil.
- Mutual Forgiveness– 1 Peter 4:8– Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Prayer Prompt: Ask that love will be the source of all you do, when things are good and when they are hard.
- Protection– Psalm 91:14-15– Because he clings to me I will deliver him; because he knows my name I will set him on high. He will call upon me and I will answer; I will be with him in distress; I will deliver him and give him honor.
Prayer Prompt: Invite the Holy Spirit to be a shield and guard over every aspect of your spouse’s life!
- Thanksgiving– Phil 1:3-6- I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with joy in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.
Prayer Prompt: Offer God gratitude for the vocation He has or will provide. Ask that you will be a vessel as God continues the good work He has begun in your spouse.
- Trust in the Lord– Phil 4:6-7- Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Prayer Prompt: Stress isn’t from God. Ask for the peace of Christ to envelop your spouse.
- Godly Marriage– Tobit 8:7– Now, Lord, you know that I take this wife of mine not because of lust, but for a noble purpose. Call down your mercy on me and on her, and allow us to live together to a happy old age. Bless us with children.
Prayer Prompt: ‘Nuff said. This is the desire we all have for our spouse and marriage!
Covering Him/Her From Head to Toe
- Mind– Romans 12:2- Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.
Prayer Prompt: The battle begins on the inside! Pray for purity of mind for your spouse!
- Eyes– Matthew 6:22-23- The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light; but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be in darkness. And if the light in you is darkness, how great will the darkness be.
Prayer Prompt: Ask for protection and triumph over pornography and images that have entered your spouse through his/her eyes.
- Mouth- Luke 6:45- A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.
Prayer Prompt: That your spouse’s words will be proof that their heart is filled with the Lord.
- Ears – John 10:27- My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
Prayer Prompt: There are many voices in the world competing for your husband/wife’s attention – ask that the Lord will make His voice known.
- Heart– Psalm 73:6– Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the rock of my heart, my portion forever.
Prayer Prompt: Invite the Lord to give you both His heart to love one another.
- Arms– Genesis 2:24– That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.
Prayer Prompt: As you cling to one another now or in the future, ask that your embrace will always draw you closer to the Lord.
- Feet– Psalm 37:31– God’s teaching is in his heart; his steps do not falter
Prayer Prompt: Invite the Lord to guide the discernment of your spouse in every aspect of his/her life.
- Ring Finger– Mark 10:9– Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.
Prayer Prompt: Pray for faithfulness in a faithless world. God wants to write your love story from now until death. Surrender your (current or future spouse) along with your fears and pray that neither of you will ever forget that there are three members to your marriage!

The Bible tells us the very definition of marriage and that two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12). We know God’s Word to be true, but if we are human and honest, we will often admit that marriage is hard. It doesn’t always seem like two really are better than one, does it?
Making our marriage stronger takes intentionality, and I believe, God’s Word and prayer. When we are intentionally humbling ourselves and praying for our spouse, our heart grows more soft and pliable. God is able to work in my heart as well as in my spouse.

One of the things I struggle with most as a mother, particularly as a Christian mother, is to trust that my children will be alright. From the moment they wake up until they fall asleep at night, I worry about them every.single.moment. Did they get enough sleep last night (no!)? Do they need to eat more veggies (yes!)? Is my son being treated kindly at school? Does my baby know I would do anything for her? This mama stuff is nerve-wracking! But there is a way to make it less stressful: put your trust in the Lord.
Easier said than done, right? I’ve never been good at doing self-led bible studies (I lack discipline), and the ones I’ve done in groups have been somewhat overwhelming (there is so much to learn!). But there are a few bible verses I love that I go to when I need some Jesus guidance. If you’re a faith-filled mama finding it hard to let Jesus lead, try to have a handful of bible verses committed to memory. In fact, start with these 7 verses. They are great ones to pray for your children everyday, as you navigate this scary world we call motherhood.
1. Philippians 4:6
1. Philippians 4:6“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
This prayer is great for children and mothers. (See very first sentence of this post.) If I can’t let go of my worries and fears, I hope that I can at least encourage my children to “let go and let God.”
2. Matthew 5:16
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Oh how I hope I’m a shining example of Christ’s love and mercy, despite being deeply flawed. I want nothing more than for my children to light up this world a million times brighter than I’ve been able to!
3. Deuteronomy 31:6
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.”
This is definitely a hard verse to practice. With so many horrible things happening in our world, it’s difficult to stand tall and have faith that God is always with us.
4. Matthew 22:37-39
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”
This. This is the most important message in the bible. If you pray just one bible verse for your children, let it be this one. As John Lennon once said, “all you need is love.”
5. 1 Peter 5:8
“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
I don’t want my children to live in fear, but I do want them to know how very real Satan is. The topic of evil is a hard one to talk about, but I want my children to know their strength when it comes to battling the enemy.
6. Romans 12:2
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
I’ve always been a red marble in a world full of blue ones. I wish the same for my children. As Christians, we are called to follow Christ, no matter how much we are persecuted. Let us remember the cross whenever we are tempted to give in to the ways of the world.
7. Psalm 127:3
“Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”
This bible verse, while more appropriate for parents, is a great one for children to hear. Each and every child should know what a blessing they are from God. How very special they are. And most importantly, how much they are loved.
