As Christians, we know that prayer is not only the way to grow closer to the Lord, but also to work through the areas of our lives that we struggle with. Sometimes, though, it’s hard to know what exactly to ask God for. We know that we’re having a hard time and that we need God’s help, but we don’t know what he can give us that will resolve our issues. If this sounds like you, here are seven things you can ask God for.

1. Wisdom

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” — James 1:5

Ask God to give you the wisdom to know how to act or what to say, whether it be in a relationship, for help in making a tough decision or anything else you’re unsure about. He has more knowledge than you could ever imagine and will be happy to share it with you.

2. Strength

“He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.” — Isaiah 40:29

If you feel like you don’t have the energy, ability or motivation to do something, ask God to give you strength. He will give you the power and strength you need to be successful.

3. Guidance

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:5-6

If you ask God to take control of your life, He will not lead you astray. He has a plan for a good life for you. lthough you may have to go through some struggles to get there, you can have the comfort of knowing that every little thing is a part of God’s master plan.

4. Confidence

“I can do everything through Him who gives me strength.” — Philippians 4:13

If you feel like you are not good enough or strong enough to do something on your own, or you’re doubtful about your future, ask God for confidence. He will make you feel worthy and let you know that you’re not alone, and He will prove to you that your future will be full of greatness.

5. Courage

“This is my commandment—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9

We all know the comfort of “safety in numbers.” Remember that with God you will always have that comfort because He will be with you to tackle whatever life hands you.

6. Peace

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.” — Colossians 3:15

Peace isn’t usually the first thing people think to ask God for, but if you feel anxious, overwhelmed or scared, peace will soothe you.

7. Freedom from fear

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me, he delivered me from all my fears.” — Psalm 34:4

Fear is something that prevents all of us from living our lives freely. God doesn’t want us to live fearfully, though. He wants to provide us with comfort and stability—all you need to do is ask.

When life hands you challenges, remember that you don’t just have to work through them on your own. It might not happen right away, but ask God for help, and He will give you what you need, even if you’re not entirely sure what that is.
