Do you know what Sodom’s sins were? You probably just thought about a particular sexual sin.
While that is true, it is not the complete story.
When speaking of Jerusalem’s idolatry, the prophet Ezekiel said of them:
Look, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: She and her daughter had pride, fullness of food, and abundance of idleness; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty and committed abomination before Me; therefore I took them away as I saw fit (Ezekiel 16:49-50).”
Did you notice that pride was listed first, with food indulgence after that? You might ask, “What is wrong with being full of food?”
While nothing is wrong with eating to satisfaction, the Sodomites ate to excess as a lifestyle.
As a result, they became self-absorbed, indulgent and lazy. They were consumed with sensual pleasures.
They did not care about others, spending their time and resources only for themselves, not helping the poor and needy around them.
I believe the story of Sodom is a cautionary tale for believers in Christ today.
Some say that gluttony is the most accepted sin in the church. Our attitude seems to be, “Lord, I’ll give you everything – but don’t touch my food!”
However, for our mission’s sake, we must confront the spirit of gluttony that is rampant in the church.
Think about this: At the end of our lives, do we really want them to have been about eating “tasty treats?”
We are each called to make a positive difference in this world, to glorify our Lord in body and spirit! Jesus said in John 15:8:
“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”
This is the fruit of God’s spirit – evidence of His work in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
This fruit grows in our lives as we renew our minds to God’s word and yield to the Holy Spirit’s leading in our actions in every area, which includes in our eating habits.
If we are not becoming more loving, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, abounding in goodness, faithful, gentle, and self-controlled with each passing year, something is wrong with our Spiritual growth.
1 Corinthians 6:12 gives us wise guidance:
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
The Lord wants only good for us. He does not want us under the power of any habit that hurts us.
Gluttony and drunkenness are frequently linked together in the Bible – and that’s not good. These habits destroy our health and interfere with our ability to think soberly and make wise decisions.
They also leave us more vulnerable to enemy attacks. 1 Peter 5:8 advises us:
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.”
The spirit of gluttony is a seductive one because it promises an escape from life, a release from pain. However, as we overindulge in devouring food, the enemy is busy devouring us!
We become a rest stop for a wicked spirit.
As a Believer, we are called to be in the world but not of the world. The wisest thing to do is submit our pain to the Lord for healing in a spirit of humility. As He heals us, we can restore food to its proper place and get on with our Father’s business!
To confront the spirit of gluttony, you must also confront the deceptive foods in your life. Deceptive foods are those that seem harmless to you, but when you eat them you find that they hijack your brain!
When your brain is hijacked, you lose self-control, binge, and become emotionally unstable.
To avoid following the pattern of the Sodomites, let us confront the spirit of gluttony in our lives and cast it out.
Here is a prayer for you to use:
“Heavenly Father, you promised that if Your people, who are called by Your name, will humble themselves, pray, seek your face, and turn from our wicked ways, you will hear from heaven, forgive our sin, and heal our land.
I thank you for giving me such a great and precious promise by which I can escape the corruption in the world and affect our nation!
I am Your child, the righteousness of God through Jesus Christ. I humble myself in this prayer, recognizing that I serve One greater than myself. I love you and you deserve all of me. My body and my spirit belong to You. Jesus bought me for You at a high cost indeed.
I am living to hear You say those wonderful words once I cross the finish line: “Well done, good and faithful child. Enter into the joy of your Lord.”
My Savior, Jesus Christ, is my compassionate High Priest. So I come to you in Jesus’s name, confessing my sin of gluttony. Lust for food has captured me. But I do not want to be like a Sodomite. I do not want to be selfish, so focused on indulging my flesh that I ignore poor and hurting people around me.
I renounce the spirit of gluttony. I take any thoughts captive in my mind that deceive me into thinking that gluttony is harmless. It is not harmless. It hurts me and it hurts others who are counting on my help. It is a wicked habit, a destructive habit. It destroys my health and keeps me trapped in a cycle of shame and guilt.
You don’t want me to live like that. Jesus came to set the captives free. I qualify! I repent Lord. I change my mind about this habit. You hate this habit as much as You hate drunkenness and I hate what You hate.
Open up my eyes as to what this habit has cost me, what it is costing me now, and what it will cost me in the future if I don’t change this now.
Lord, teach me Your way so that I may walk in Your truth daily. Your word is truth. Lead me in a smooth path, because of my enemies. Gluttony is my enemy. Show me the foods that are hijacking my brain. Give me courage to kick them out of my life and replace them with foods that taste good but don’t hijack my brain.
I submit all emotional pain to You for healing, Lord. Help me regain emotional balance so that I put on the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.
I know that You love me, Father and want what is best for me. You’ve begun a good work in me and will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.
Each day, I hold on to Your unchanging hand. I trust that You will lead me in paths of righteousness for Your name sake. I will delight myself in You and You will give me the desires of my heart.
My heart’s desire is that You heal me and heal our nation so that the people in our land turns their hearts back to You.
Amen.
An intolerable habit will remain in your life as long as you are willing to tolerate it.
Resist the enemy in this area and he must flee!
Be blessed with health, healing, and wholeness,

On Fridays we will be going through the primary vices that stand in the way of our development in the spiritual life.
Our first vice is gluttony. Viewed from a worldly perspective, gluttony doesn’t seem like that big of a problem. Sure, we should be healthy, and I suppose that means we shouldn’t sneak too much ice cream in the afternoon, or take fourth helpings every night. I don’t know about you, but what really causes me trouble, in terms of sheer empty calories, is bourbon. Ah, bourbon!
But on the other hand, and maybe ironically, the Catholic should have enough contempt for the body not to take this too seriously. There are worse things in the world than having a little bit of a beer belly. In fact, in our world today, it often seems that worship of the body has gone way too far. People organize their whole lives around staying svelte.
To truly love the body is not to worship it, but to live in it. A little bourbon, appropriately applied; a piece of birthday cake; a feast with friends: these, we rightly say, are worth more than a magazine-worthy body.
And indeed, there is a kind of gluttony even in taking food too seriously. Foodies – those who live for the coolest recipe, or the most super-organic food out there – often seem to be making their bellies their gods. We don’t want to do that.
So on the natural level, gluttony is a vice than can go both ways: we can love food too much, we can oppose it too much; we can be too worried about health, we can be not worried enough; we can be too picky, we can be too slovenly. The key is moderation – or, better, discretion. The key is to eat intelligently, to be led by our souls, not our bellies.
But gluttony is also significant on the spiritual level. It is significant, in fact, precisely because it is not that big of a deal on the natural level.
On the spiritual level, the question of gluttony is precisely why we make such a big deal of it. Why, when the tradition suggests we skip a meal here or there, or not have a fancy meal or too many desserts, does that make us panic? What are we living for?
Precisely because food isn’t that big of a deal – honestly, there are a lot of things we can go without, even if they are nice – it is a good place to practice self-control.
Think of it this way. An awful lot of our sins can be described as spiritual gluttony. Those nasty words I am so tempted to say are like a tasty treat. I need to say no. That lustful glance, that self-indulgent rest when I know I should be working or praying, the addictive acquisition of stuff I don’t need, and the delicious indulgence of my own will just for the sake of doing it my way: this is the real stuff of the spiritual life, but it is all an awful lot like grabbing a glass of bourbon (or a cookie, or a third helping of dinner, or an excuse on a fast day).
Fasting and gluttony are not the most important thing. They are the little thing, where we can practice living for something higher, instead of just indulging.
And so the Church encourages us to fast. Traditionally every day of Lent, except Sundays and solemnities, was a fast day: pretty tough. In the East they make it both longer and tougher. Canon Law still tells us to skip meat on Fridays (and for many of us, fish is even fancier than meat) unless we live a harder fast. Many in the tradition have found small ways to fast every Wednesday and Friday of the year, and the day before every feast day. And there are always ways to deny ourselves what we don’t really need.
On the other hand, we can also practice detachment from food by eating when we ought. To make a feast on a feast day: not just self-indulgence, but really celebrating with food.
And practicing hospitality. St. Benedict’s Rule says to treat the guest like Christ. He’s really just paraphrasing Cassian on gluttony, where he says that the desert fathers would eat nothing for days – then have six meals a day to welcome guests.
The point is to use food to practice setting love above all else.

Is Gluttony a Sin?
In the turn of the century, early 1900’s you hardly heard of heart attacks, cancer, and other types of diseases like today. The bible does talk about drunkenness and gluttony. Did you know drunkenness and gluttony is a spirit? Do you feel good about yourself? It is an unloving spirit working on you to overeat. Is Gluttony a sin!
Sin of gluttony in America is a problem. In the turn of the century we eating 4 pounds of sugar a year. Today, we are consuming 130 pounds per person per year. Not only that most of your prepared food and even spices have sugars added to them. In the early 1900’s diabetes were very few and now over 10 million.
On saturated fats is much higher in our foods. Also in the turn of the century, heart attacks were unheard of. The death rate annually from hardening of arteries and degenerative heart disease in the United States is the highest in the world compared to everywhere else. Life Insurance Companies has shown that a man 45 years of age, who increases his weight by 25 pounds over standard weight, reduces his life expectancy 25%.
The reason is the types of fat we eat. People are misled by the polyunsaturates in margarines and oils. They don’t look for hydrogenated on the labels. The hydrogenated in your oil or butter is plastic.

How to Overcome Gluttony?
We are overweight and eating all the wrong things. So, what does a person need to eat? I say the caveman diet. What is the caveman diet – eliminating processed foods. You want to lose weight? Then Eat as natural as you can such as:
- Fruits ad vegetables, including leafy greens
- Eat meat 3 times a week
- Eat less and more often.
- Don’t eat junk food
- Eat less sweets
- Stay away from boxed dinners
- Less carbohydrates and starches from bread
Include exercise such as a rebound trampoline in your house to jump while watching TV to overcome overeating. If you cannot control your food intake and overeat for comfort, you may have a spirit of gluttony. You may need deliverance from sin of Gluttony then you are able to overcome gluttony.
Other reasons of a spirit of gluttony is because of how we handle our emotions. When you feel rejected do you eat for comfort? Need for love? Do you, when you feel lonely reach for cookies? When you feel stressed, need to drink some type of alcohol to deal with your stress or some type of food? That is a false pathway to peace called comfort food or drink. That is when you use something else besides God to take care of your need.
