Quick morning prayer

This isn’t an extremely profound thought, but it’s a good reminder for me that I thought I’d share.  (You see, I have this habit of forgetting good things if I don’t write about them, share them with others, and then re-read them again.  A blog is handy in that way.)

I’ve found that a good start to creating a healthy refuge each day is spending even a brief amount of time praying.  Not just praying to “something out there.”  But, praying to the eternal, life-giving, all-powerful One True God of the Universe.  Conversing with Him, even for a few minutes at the start of my day, changes my perspective.  I go from “today is all about me” to “today is all about Him and others.” Ironically, when this shift occurs, the day not only goes better for my others–my husband, kids, friends, co-workers, etc–but also for me.  There is much more that can be said about that, but it’s “funny” how that principle works.

This morning’s quick prayer is hands down one of my favorites.  It’s from a Puritan Prayer called “Morning Dedication”:

“Almighty God, as I cross the threshold of this day I commit myself, soul, body, affairs, friends, to Thy care. Watch over, keep, guide, direct, sanctify, bless me. Incline my heart to thy ways….May I speak each word as if my last word, and walk each step as my final one. If my life should end today, let this be my best day.”

The rest of this prayer and many others that I’d describe as “heart-melting” are at this link:

P.S. This post was providential, I suppose, since not 30 minutes after writing it a fourth person in the past three weeks in my family woke up puking.  This time it is the 2-year-old.  I commit yet another puke-filled/cleaning-up day to you, God!

This is a great covering morning prayer for you that you can pray every morning before you start your day.

Almighty God, as I cross the threshold of this day I commit myself, soul, body, affairs, friends, to Thy care. Watch over, keep, guide, direct, sanctify, bless me. Incline my heart to thy ways. Mold me wholly into the image of Jesus, as a potter forms clay. May my lips be a well-tuned harp to sound Thy praise. Let those around see me living by Thy Spirit, trampling the world underfoot, unconformed to lying vanities, transformed by a renewed mind, clad in the entire armor of God, shining as a never-dimmed light, showing holiness in all my doings.  Let no evil this day soil my thoughts, words, hands. May I travel miry paths with a life pure from spot or stain. In needful transactions let my affection be in heaven, and my love soar upwards in flames of fire, my gaze fixed on unseen things, my eyes open to the emptiness, fragility, mockery of earth and its vanities. May I view all things in the mirror of eternity, waiting for the coming of my Lord, listening for the last trumpet call, hastening unto the new heaven and earth. Order this day all my communications according to Thy wisdom, and to the gain of mutual good. Forbid that I should not be profited or made profitable. May I speak each word as if my last word, and walk each step as my final one. If my life should end today, let this be my best day. In Jesus Name, Amen
