For mothers to be, praying for their unborn child is just one way to gain peace. While waiting for the birth of your child, share one of these great prayers for unborn babies to receive God’s blessing.
Prayer #1
Praise Your name and thank You Father for the little baby that is about to be born. Lord we pray that you would protect this little infant that is being knit together in his mother’s womb and we pray Lord that You would undertake for a safe delivery at the right time.
Thank You that You know every intimate detail of this little life and we pray that by Your grace You would open the best path for this little one to take. May this baby grow up to know and love the Lord Jesus, which will make him wise unto salvation.. as did the young Timothy who was taught the holy Scriptures at the knee of his mother and grandmother.
We pray Your protection and grace for this little baby who is shortly to take his place in the world and ask that he may grow in wisdom and understanding – finding grace and favor with man and God.
Guard and protect both mother and child as the day for delivery draws ever closer and keep them from all the perils and dangers of this life – looking to Jesus in Whom is life and light and help and wholeness. We ask this in Jesus name,
Amen.
Prayer #2
Heavenly Father, how we praise and thank You for the little baby that is growing in secret, inside of me. Lord this is such a wonderful miracle and I give thanks and praise for what You have done in me.
Lord – we truly are fearfully and wonderfully made and to realize that You have scheduled every day of our precious baby’s life already is a wonderful thought. I pray Lord that You would protect this little one as he or she is being prepared to be born into the world. Place Your hand of blessing upon them and I pray that they will grow up to know and love You Lord Jesus.
Prepare me too Lord for parenthood and give me wisdom and grace as I get ready for the day when a new little life will be born into the world. Thank You for giving me the privilege of being the parent of this little baby, in Jesus,
Amen.
Prayer #3
Heavenly Father, I do praise and thank You for my children and for bringing them safely to adulthood, and what a joy it is to know that this thrilling gift of new human life has been given to my own child – as we wait for the birth of their unborn baby – my own little grand-child.
How wonderful to realize that this.. as yet unborn treasure is a gift of God’s grace to our family. How precious to realize that this little baby is created in Your image for which we thank and praise You.
Guard and protect we pray this little life from all dangers and complications as he or she is being formed in the womb and we pray that Your hand of blessing and grace may rest upon the whole family. Lord I just want to say thank You for this little grand-child and for the joy that has already flooded our hearts as we wait in anticipation for the day when this new little person will join our family circle – in Jesus name we pray,
Amen.
Prayer #4
Heavenly Lord – You are the author of life and we pray Your blessing and protection over this little life that is developing in its mother’s womb. We pray that you would grant an uncomplicated pregnancy and a healthy birth and we bless You for the beauty of new life.
Guard and protect the mother and fill her heart with longing and expectation as it draws closer to her time of delivery and instill in her a sense of wonder and awe at the miracle of life that is being formed within her body.
Give grace we pray to the father, who by Your favor has fathered this child. Grant him strength, wisdom and the courage to engage in all godly responsibilities toward his family. May he lead his family into the path of righteousness – becoming a genuine example of man of God.
Draw near to each one and may this little life that is soon to take up his or her position within the home and family be nurtured in the things of God and come to trust the Lord Jesus as Lord and Savior, in Whose name we pray,
Amen.
Prayer #5
In the name of the Lord Jesus I bring my unborn child to You Lord and thank You for this gift of grace that has been granted to me. Lord You have heard my prayers as you did Hannah in the bible and have granted me the privilege of bringing a new little life into the world. I pray that my pregnancy may be free of complications and that my little baby will be born perfectly healthy and complete.
Lord I pray that your hand of grace would be on this child not only in the womb but once he is born. May he come to know and love You Lord and grow into a strong and healthy little child who comes to know the Lord Jesus as his Savior.
Father I thank and praise You for all the great things that you have done for me and for all the things as yet unknown that You have in store for us all. Lord I love you and stand in awe of the wonderful miracle of life that is growing inside of me and lift up my hands to praise Your glorious name,
Amen.
Prayer #6
Almighty God, our Father,
you who have given us life
and intended us to have it forever,
grant us your blessings.
Enlighten our minds to an awareness
and to a renewed conviction
that all human life is sacred
because it is created
in your image and likeness.
Help us to teach by word
and the example of our lives
that life occupies the first place,
that human life is precious
because it is the gift of God
whose love is infinite.
Give us the strength to defend human life
against every influence
or action that threatens or weakens it,
as well as the strength
to make every life more human
in all its aspects.
Give us the grace…
When the sacredness of life
before birth is attacked,
to stand up and proclaim
that no one ever has the authority
to destroy unborn life.
When a child is described as a burden
or is looked upon only as a means
to satisfy an emotional need,
to stand up
and insist that every child is a unique
and unrepeatable gift of God,
a gift of God
with a right to a loving
and united family.
When the institution of marriage
is abandoned to human selfishness
or reduced to a temporary conditional arrangement
that can easily be terminated,
to stand up and affirm
the indissolubility of the marriage bond.
When the value of the family is threatened
because of social and economic pressure,
to stand up and reaffirm
that the family is necessary
not only for the private good of every person,
but also for the common good of every society,
nation and state.
When freedom is used to dominate the weak,
to squander natural resources and energy,
to deny basic necessities to people,
to stand up and affirm
the demands of justice and social love.
Almighty Father,
give us courage to proclaim the supreme dignity
of all human life and to demand
that society itself give its protection.
We ask this in your name,
through the redemptive act
of your Son and in the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Prayer #10
Father, in Jesus’ name, I confess Your Word this day over my pregnancy and the birth of my child. I ask You to quickly perform Your Word, trusting that it will not go out from You and return to You void, but rather that it will accomplish that which pleases You. Your Word is quick and powerful and discerns my heart intentions and the thoughts of my mind.
Right now I put on the whole armor of God so that I may be able to stand against the tricks and traps of the devil. I recognize that my fight is not with flesh and blood, but against principalities, powers, and the rulers of darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places. God, I stand above all, taking the shield of faith and being able to quench the attacks of the devil with Your mighty power. I stand in faith during this pregnancy and birth, not giving any room to fear, but possessing power, love, and a sound mind, as Your Word promises in 2 Timothy 1:7.
Heavenly Father, I confess that You are my Refuge; I trust You during this pregnancy and childbirth. I am thankful and that You have put angels to watch over me and my unborn child. I cast all the care and burden of this pregnancy over on You, Lord. Your grace is sufficient for me through my pregnancy; You strengthen my weaknesses.
Father, Your Word declares that my unborn child was created in Your image, fearfully and wonderfully made to praise You. You have made me a joyful mother, and I am blessed with a heritage from You as my reward. I commit this child to You, Father, and pray that he or she will grow and call me blessed.
I am not afraid of pregnancy or childbirth because I fixed and trusting upon You, Father. I believe that my pregnancy and childbirth will be void of all problems. Thank You, Father, that all decisions regarding my pregnancy and delivery will be godly, that the Holy Spirit will intervene. Lord, You are my Dwelling Place, and I rest in the knowledge that evil will not come near me or no sickness or infirmity will strike me or my unborn child. I know that Jesus died on the cross to take away my sickness and pain. Having accepted Your Son, Jesus, as my Savior, I confess that my child will be born healthy and completely whole. Thank You, Father, for the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus that has made me and my child free from the law of sin and death!
Father, thank You for protecting me and my baby and for our good health. Thank You for hearing and answering my prayers.
Amen.
Prayer #11
Father, I thank You for filling my womb with life. I know this precious little baby comes from You and has been destined by You from the beginning of the world. I thank You for this miracle growing inside me, in the “secret place” of my womb. I thank you that You are giving this little baby to us as a gift, but also as a gift for the world. We can’t wait to see another image of Yourself come forth into this world and the plans You have for this child.
We ask you, Father, in Jesus’ name, to hedge our little baby about with Your mighty protection. Watch over this little one each day as You intricately create him/her in the hidden sanctuary of the womb. We ask for Your divine health and that you will sustain me in good health and vitality throughout this whole pregnancy.
I ask that You will fill me with Your joy and that everyone will see the glory of God upon me as I nurture this precious life within me. Thank You again for this amazing miracle and for giving us an eternal soul that will live forever. It is awesome to think that I am part of something eternal.
I pray that You will keep this baby growing in the womb until full term and this baby will come forth in Your perfect timing.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.”

A friend of mine once told me that, all through one of her pregnancies, she prayed God would give her a beautiful little girl with blue eyes and dark hair.
God granted that request, but the little girl was also quite stubborn. She was so headstrong, in fact, that by the time she was two years old, my friend was wishing she’d spent more of her pregnancy praying for her daughter’s character than for her physical features!
Of course, I don’t think praying for a baby is like ordering off a menu, but I do know that God delights in giving us the desires of our heart (Psalm 37:4-5) — especially when those desires are in line with His own.
While it never occurred to me or my husband to pray for a child’s hair or eye color, or even for a particular sex, we certainly sent up many other heartfelt petitions for our children, beginning from the first moment we learned we were expecting, if not before.
Here are the things for which we most fervently prayed:
Table of contents
C is for Conscience
Pray that God would give your child a tender conscience and would draw her to faith at an early age. Pray that she would be anointed by the Holy Spirit even in the womb and would know and love the Holy Scriptures from infancy. (1 Timothy 1:5; Luke 18:16-17; Luke 1:14-15; 2 Timothy 3:15)
H is for Health
Pray that, if would please Him, God would give your child good health and a strong body. Recognize that is is He who knits your baby together in her mother’s womb, and ask Him to watch carefully over every stage of her development. (3 John 1:2; Isaiah 40:29; Psalm 139:13-16)
I is for Intellect
Ask God to give your child understanding, so she might learn His commands. Pray that He’d bless her with a sound mind and would grant her wisdom and discernment. Pray that she would love the truth and not be swayed by false teaching. (Psalm 119:73; James 1:5; Proverbs 2:2-11; Ephesians 4:14)
L is for Love
Pray that your child would feel secure both in God’s love and in her parents’ love. Pray that she would learn to put others first. Pray that she would love the LORD with all her heart, soul, mind, and strength, and would love others as herself. (Romans 8:38-39; 1 John 4:19; Mark 12:30-31; Philippians 2:2-4)
D is for Disposition
Ask God to give your child a happy, cheerful disposition. Pray that He would fill her heart with joy and gratitude. Pray that she would bring hope and encouragement to everyone she meets. (Proverbs 15:13; 1 Thessalonians 5:18; Ephesians 6:7; Romans 15:13; Proverbs 12:25; Hebrews 10:23-25)
Do you (did you) pray for your babies before they were born? On what things were you most likely to focus your requests?

As part of our Practical Parenting series, my good friend Jennifer is here with 20 prayers to pray for your unborn child. P.S. These are also great for little kids, big kids, and adult children too 🙂
Pregnancy is such a tender time.
Looking ahead to the arrival of a new little life – one entrusted to my care – is at once thrilling and humbling…
exhilarating and sobering.
Aches and pains, morning sickness, and sleepless nights are overwhelmed by the delighted anticipation of welcoming a baby.
But those final days before a child is born can be excruciating. And the laboring of a child into the world is a glimpse of laboring to come…
Laboring in prayer.
Laboring in diligent training.
Laboring in love.
Laboring in patience and nurture and grace and a million other labors that make motherhood a weighty calling and a significant one.
When your precious child makes her way into the world, you’ll do many important things for her. But none so important as prayer.
Some days you’ll forget to read to her. Some days you’ll forget to keep working on that shoe-tying thing with him. Some days you’ll forget to sit down and have a heart-to-heart. But if you take the time to pray for your child, you’ve remembered the most important thing.
So if you’re a mama-to-be, why not get started? Whether you’re expecting now or looking further into the future, it’s never too early – or too late – to begin praying for your children.
Here are 20 prayers for your unborn child, straight from the pages of Scripture. You may also want to download this FREE set of scripture prayer cards.
(And I suspect you might find these prayers useful even if your kids are now in your arms rather than your womb.)
1.) Praise God that your child is fearfully and wonderfully made, and ask Him to continue knitting her together in your womb in the precise way He desires (Psalm 139:13-14).
2.) Rejoice before God that all of your child’s days have been ordained by God (Psalm 139:16). Acknowledge to Him that her days belong to Him, from the first to the last and every day in between.
3.) Pray that in due time, the Holy Spirit would convict your child of his sin, and bring awareness of God’s righteousness and his coming judgment apart from salvation (John 16:8).
4.) Pray that she’ll never be deceived about the state of her heart before God (Matthew 7:21-23), never believing she’s saved if she isn’t and never doubting she’s saved if she is.
5.) Ask God for your child to have a close relationship with Him as he abides in Christ (John 15:7-9).
6.) Claim on your child’s behalf the truth that God has not called her for impurity, but in holiness (I Thessalonians 4:7).
7.) Pray that God would give your child a heart that trusts in Him, leaning not on her own understanding, but acknowledging Him in all things. Remind God of His desire to direct her paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).
8.) Ask God to grant your child a biblical fear of the Lord – an awareness of His holiness and His power, and a reverence that inspires obedience. Pray that your child will know God intimately in his life, and that the fear of God and the knowledge of God would lead your child to wisdom and insight (Proverbs 9:10).
9.) Pray that your child would develop self-control, thus securing his testimony before others (I Corinthians 9:24-27). Ask God to help him renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live a self-controlled, upright, and godly live in the present age (Titus 2:12).
10.) Recount back to God that your child’s worth is more than that of many sparrows, and that He is the only One who can provide for her needs (Luke 12:24).
11.) Pray that he would love God’s Word and meditate on it throughout his days (Psalm 119:97).
12.) Pray that she would be great – not by intelligence or power or fame, but by serving others (Mark 10:43-45).
13.) Ask God to grant him a compassionate heart, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with others and forgiving them as he has been forgiven (Colossians 3:12-13).
14.) Pray that the Faithful One would enable her to hold fast to her faith without wavering (Hebrews 10:23).
15.) Pray that he would grow in grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18).
16.) Entreat God to grant her a heart that seeks justice, loves mercy, and walks humbly with God (Micah 6:8).
17.) Pray that he would walk with the wise, becoming wise himself. Ask God to steer her away from companionship with fools (Proverbs 13:20).
18.) Pray that he would live as light in a dark world (Ephesians 5:8).
19.) Ask God that she would live with an awareness that her life is meant for bearing fruit (Philippians 1:22; John 15:8).
20.) Implore the Lord to lead him in walking in the ways of God’s laws and in waiting for Him. Ask that His name and His renown would be the desire of your child’s heart (Isaiah 26:8).
Heavenly Father, how I praise you for the gift of motherhood! Thank you for entrusting me with the care and nurture of a child for the time period you’ve ordained. Please keep me eve mindful that this precious child is not mine – he is yours, and you’ve charged me with a sacred task. Thank you that you will equip me to fulfill this high calling, as I abide in Christ and walk in Your grace. In Jesus Christ’s name I pray, Amen.

Part of preparing ourselves for a new little one is spending time in prayer for our baby’s health and spiritual well-being. A couple of months ago, I was convicted that I wasn’t spending much time in prayer for the baby specifically. We included the baby in prayers for our family but I wanted to be more intentional about speaking Scripture over my unborn child!
I spent some time looking through my Bible and using Bible Gateway to find some beautiful passages that speak precious promises and God’s truth over your baby! You can certainly pray these over all of your children, as we know that the Word of God accomplishes the purpose for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:11-12) and that Scripture prayed over your family has great power.
Further down this post, you’ll find the link to download the printable prayer cards!
I’ve also created a free printable with the fourteen verses I chose in case you would like to print it out and have it nearby when you have prayer time (it’s an 8×10 so you could trim and frame it or put it in a page protector as is). They are mostly NASB and NKJV with a KJV verse thrown in because I liked the way it was phrased better than the other versions.
I’m planning to use these at night before bed and hopefully can include my older children in praying these over the baby during devotions. They are wonderful for memorization as well and can easily be used in a two-week cycle. Here are the verses I chose, feel free to look them up in your favorite version!
Psalm 139:14 – “I will give thanks to you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.”
Philippians 1:6 – “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in your will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Psalm 127:3-5 – “Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed when they speak with their enemies in the gate.”
3 John 4 – “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.”
Isaiah 54:13 – “All thy children shall be taught of the Lord; and great shall be the peace of Thy children.”
Psalm 90:17 – “Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; and confirm for us the work of our hands; yes, confirm the work of our hands.”
2 Peter 3:18 – “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.”
Psalm 138:8 – “The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy, O Lord, endures forever; do not forsake the works of Your hands.”
2 Thessalonians 3:3 – “But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.”
Colossians 2:2 – “That their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself.”
Titus 3:5-6 – “He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.”
Psalm 37:23 – “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and He delights in his way.”
Psalm 145:4 – “One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.”
1 Samuel 1:27 – “For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition which I asked of Him.”
You’ll notice almost half of them are from the Psalms. I love how the poetry and promises of this book of the Old Testament!
There are many, many verses that I’m sure I have not included, so if you have some that you currently pray over your children, please feel free to mention them in the comments!
