Prayer for healing illness and recovery

For the Recovery of a Sick Person

O  Merciful God, giver of life and health; Bless, I pray you, your servant, , and those who administer to with your healing gifts; that may be restored to health of body and of mind; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Prayer for Physical Renewal

Lord, I come before you today in need of your healing hand. In you all things are possible. Hold my heart within yours, and renew my mind, body, and soul.

I am lost, but I am singing. You gave me life, and you also give me the gift of infinite joy. Give me the strength to move forward on the path you’ve laid out for me. Guide me towards better health, and give me the wisdom to identify those you’ve placed around me to help me get better. In your name I pray,

For Recovery from Illness

O  Lord Jesus Christ, our Savior, Physician of souls and bodies, who became human and suffered death on the Cross for our salvation; through your tender love and compassion, you healed all kinds of sickness and affliction; I pray that you will visit me in my suffering, and grant me grace and strength to bear this sickness with which I am afflicted, with Christian patience and submission to your will, trusting in your loving kindness and tender mercy.

Bless, I pray you, the means used for my recovery, and those who administer them. I know O Lord, that I justly deserve any punishment you may inflict upon me for, I have so often offended and sinned against you, in thought, word and deed. Therefore, I humbly pray to you to look upon my weakness, and deal with me not according to my sins, but according to the multitude of your mercies. Have compassion on me, and let mercy and justice meet; and deliver me from this sickness and suffering I am undergoing.

Grant that my sickness may be the means of my true repentance and amendment of my life according to your will, that I may spend the rest of my days in your love and fear: that my soul, being helped by your grace and sanctified by your holy Spirit, may be prepared for its passage to eternal life, in the company of the faithful, and may praise and glorify you, with your Eternal Father and life-giving Spirit.

For Someone Who Suffers Illness

O  FATHER of mercies and God of all comfort, our only help in time of need; I humbly beseech thee to behold, visit, and relieve those who suffer from illness of the body, mind, and spirit for whom our prayers are desired. Look upon with the eyes of thy mercy; comfort him with a sense of thy goodness; preserve him from the temptations of the enemy; and give him patience under his affliction. In thy good time, restore him to health, and enable him to lead the residue of his life in thy fear, and to thy glory; and grant that finally he may dwell with thee in life everlasting; through Jesus Christ our Lord

For Those Suffering from Mental Illness

O  HEAVENLY Father, I beseech you to have mercy upon all your children who are living with mental illnesses, . Restore them to strength of mind and cheerfulness of spirit, and give them health and peace; and if, because of their clouded minds, they are unable to pray for forgiveness of their sins, I pray that you will keep their souls pure and blameless, through the miraculous love of Jesus Christ our Lord.

For One about to Undergo Surgery

ALMIGHTY God our heavenly Father, I pray that you will comfort your servant in suffering, and will bless those who try to heal and the means they use. Fill heart with confidence, that even though is sometimes afraid, yet may put his trust in you; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Thanksgiving After Recovery from Sickness

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, source of life and fountain of all good things, I bless your Holy Name, and give you the most hearty thanks for having delivered me from my sickness and restored me to health. Grant me your continuing grace, that I may keep my good resolutions and correct the errors of my past life, and improve in virtue, and live a new life in dutiful fear of you, doing your will in all things, and devoting this new life which you have given me to your service: that living for you, I may be ready when it is your will to call me to you. All honor, praise, glory, and thanksgiving to you, heavenly Father, together with your blessed son Jesus and the Holy Comforter, now and forever.

Prayer should be part of the treatment and recovery plan when you or a loved one is sick or injured.

Healing Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for hearing this prayer and helping me as I face this injury. I trust in you and submit to your will, and I know that you will never forsake me. Please give me the strength and discipline to persevere through my treatment and recovery, and the wisdom to participate constructively in my own treatment. Please guide the doctors in their care for me, and please bless my friends and family as they support me through this challenge.

The healing prayer above can be customized as needed. For example, you can replace “injury” with “illness” or with a more specific description of the problem. And if you are praying for someone other than yourself, you can replace instances of “I” and “me” with the name of the person you are praying for.

Prayer can be an immense help and comfort in times of illness and injury. If you, or someone that you care about, is facing a serious illness, disease, or injury, do not neglect to pray earnestly for healing and recovery. Fear and doubt in such times is completely natural, but you should not let despair overwhelm you. As Jesus told his disciples, you should “always pray and not give up” (Luke 18:1).

Do not doubt that God has the power to heal the sick. “Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people” (Matthew 4:23). And do not doubt that “If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer” (Matthew 21:22). Remember that “the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16).

You should work closely with your doctors and take an active role in your own treatment and recovery. Take medications as prescribed, don’t skip or delay needed appointments, and work diligently in needed therapies. But also pray regularly. Use this challenging period to build your relationship with God, and trust that God will hear your healing prayer.

As Proverbs 3:5-8 says: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones.”
