How to pray for pastors with scriptures

Pray the Scriptures

Why an emphasis on praying scripture?

Well, let me ask, are you tired of the form of religion without the power of it? Are you hungry for a dynamic, transformed life that reflects the glorious fullness of your salvation? Are you seeking power prayer that avails? So am I! You’ll find some satisfaction for your hunger on this web site.

From years of ministering to individuals and leading retreats, I’ve come to realize that part of the “more” we are all longing for is the fruit of

prayer proclamations and prayer affirmations based on Scripture.

Hi! I’m Jeanie Rose. Welcome to the website! Whenever I minister, I emphasize the critical importance of praying Scripture. It is critical to making our prayers effective and also critical to our own spiritual development. There is never enough time to cover the topic as it should be. Actually, there is no end to covering the topic. Thus: a website devoted to this very purpose! If you are a person of prayer, either experienced or a fledgling, you will find material here to deepen your prayer life and expand your faith. Read on a bit to get a sense of what is in store for you here. Bookmark this site and come back often. New articles are added regularly. Feel free to contribute with Prayers to Share and comments on the Blog. I love it!

Power and Dynamics of Scripture Prayer
What I’ve discovered is this: You speak God’s Word over your own life. In so doing, you speak and release into your own life-space the truth that God has already spoken. You release the power of Scripture!
• By praying (proclaiming) in such a way, you honor God….by believing Him and responding with action to His truths. Such action is an essential element to a life of faith. And remember, God loves faith!

• In addition, you strengthen your own life by

overwriting negative scripts that have driven your life for years. What a simple antidote to destructive negativity!

• Proclaiming scripture is a

natural response to understanding what God has promised you through Jesus Christ.

• Such prayer is

part of the exercise of your royal priesthood, exercising priesthood on your own behalf and that of family, friends, and all that concerns you. As you exercise this priesthood in prayer, you grown in Kingdom authority and dominion. This is not arrogance or presumption, but confidence in who God has called you to be and to do.

• Now you come to

a place of synergy: agreement with God. You come to that place, you and I, where His Word will not return to Him void.
(Is 55:10-11) We begin to sense the power of Heaven released in our lives. Wow! Don’t miss the article on Confession of Faith for more about the dynamics of Scripture prayer!

A Renewed Mind through Scripture Prayer

Your thinking changes. Your mind is being renewed according to the Word of God. You begin thinking in a powerful new way. The Lord says all things are possible for us who believe. You are developing possibility thinking!

As your thinking expands, your behavior begins to reflect more and more the truths of God found in the Scriptures you have been praying and proclaiming.

The

mind of Christ is being activated in you and you are beginning to demonstrate the thoughts and intents of His heart. Speaking Like God? Saying What God Says
How often have we prayed, “Lord I want to be like You!” Little did we know that to be like Him, we must think like Him and speak like Him.

This takes a personal investment on your part to get the “mind of Christ” prayer proclamations in you to become habitual, but it can be done! There are a number of helpful strategies for this. Please take time to read

“How to Pray Scripture”. It’s simple and helpful. If you have not prayed Scripture before, these articles will get you going! Pray Psalm 91 Today will also give you more practical experience with Scripture prayer.

Demonstrated Power of a Renewed Mind

When Paul directed us to have our minds renewed according to the Word (Ro 12:2), he pointed us in the right direction. He just didn’t fill in the rest of the instruction. He was probably too engaged in living out his own boldly authoritative and fruitful Mind of Christ to take more time with his instruction to us.

Talk about bold and vibrant! Paul became the most outstanding church planter-statesmen of all time. Paul didn’t just write about a renewed mind: he brilliantly demonstrated the power of it.

Read “Believe/Faith” for more on this topic.

The Transformed Life

Now isn’t this what you are sensing a need for in your own life?

Paul wrote to one church group that when he came to them he wanted to see not just words but power (

1Co 4:19-20)…the power of a transformed mind reflected in a transformed life…nothing mediocre, nothing status quo…but power and growth.

Ah yes, there it is! That’s what we want, you and I? …a transformed life reflecting the power of heaven with supernatural expansion and strength. It starts between our ears and is freely available to all of us. Yes, all things are possible to us who believe. Praise be to God!

If this hits a chord with you, stick around and do some reading. You may have found a place and resources that God is providing for you in this season of your life.

Pastoral ministry is a business unlike any other. It is a dangerous business. A sacred business. A business where the souls of people are at stake.

I was a pastor for many years, so I have a feel for the perils and pleasures of ministry. It’s very hard, supremely rewarding work.

Gardiner Spring said:

It is at a fearful expense that ministers are ever allowed to enter the pulpit without being preceded, accompanied, and followed by the earnest prayers of the churches. It is no marvel that the pulpit is so powerless, and ministers so often disheartened when there are so few to hold up their hands…When the churches cease to pray for ministers, ministers will no longer be a blessing to the churches.

In light of the challenges of ministry, here are 8 prayers every church member should pray for their pastor(s) on a regular basis.

#1 – For Protection From Satan

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8).

If Satan can take down a shepherd of God’s people, the odds are much higher that God’s people will scatter. That they’ll become bitter and disenfranchised. They will question everything they’ve ever been taught by that pastor. Satan targets pastors because the damage is exponential if they fall. Pray for your pastor that he would be kept safe from Satan.

Father, please protect my pastor from the attacks of Satan. Give him the strength to endure temptation and stand firm against the accusations Satan loves to whisper in his ear. Help him stand firm in your service, always fighting for the faith and for his people.

#2 – For Protection Against His Own Sinful Heart

But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. (James 1:14-15)

Pastors don’t fall because one day, out of the blue, they decide to dive headlong into sin. The slide into sin happens slowly, over time, in small increments, as the pastor believes the lies presented to him by his flesh. Pray for your pastor that he would be on guard against the lies of sin. Pray that he would have a proper fear of God.

Father, please protect my pastor from the deceitfulness of sin that we all are so prone to. Guard him from sin. Keep his conscience tender and fresh. Keep him close to you and close to your word.

Helpful Resource:

#3 – For Deep Spiritual Encouragement

For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine. (Romans 1:11-12)

Pastoral ministry can be brutal, discouraging work. Pastors find themselves in the midst of terrible situations on a regular basis – divorce, death, apostasy, and much more. It’s also challenging because they don’t see progress in the sense that other jobs do. Christians are always in progress. Because of this, discouragement and depression can be a regular companion of the minister. Pray for your pastor to be encouraged.

Father, please encourage my pastor by the power of your Spirit. Let his soul be refreshed with the love of Christ. Let him have faith for the future. Help him to keep pressing forward even when the way is littered with landmines. Let him be refreshed by the fact that your grace is sufficient for him.

#4 – For Wisdom

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (James 1:5)

Many elements of pastoral ministry are not black and white. A husband and wife are in serious conflict, and the husband has one story while the wife has another. A church member needs financial support but has a history of mismanaged finances. A young man struggles with same-sex attraction while still wanting to follow Jesus. Pastors need God’s wisdom to navigate these gray areas.

Father, please give my pastor your wisdom. Help him know the way to go even when the way is not clear. Give him discernment to know good from evil, even when evil is dressed as good. Help him apply your word to even the most confusing situations.

Helpful Resource:

#5 – For Doctrinal Faithfulness

By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you (2 Timothy 1:14).

Pastors can be tempted to modify or even abandon biblical doctrines for a variety of reasons. Cultural pressures, vocal church members, even legal actions can press hard upon pastors, making them feel that the only way out is to give up the clear teaching of Scripture. They need God’s grace to stay faithful to the good deposit of God’s word.

Father, I pray for my pastor that you would help him hold fast to Scripture, even when everyone else tells him to let go. Help him stand on your word and only your word. Protect him from the temptation to abandon the precious truths laid out in Scripture.

#6 – For A Healthy Body

But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified (1 Corinthians 9:27).

Ministry can take a tremendous toll on a pastor’s body. Yes, our bodies are temples, but they are often broken temples. Long nights at the hospital, high-stress situations, and ever-present discouragement can quickly lead to burnout and body betrayal. Not only do pastor’s need spiritual strength, they need physical strength as well. Pray for your pastor that he would be sustained in body and mind.

Father, please give my pastoral supernatural strength. Protect him from sickness and disease. Give him your energy to keep serving faithfully. Help him to find periods of rest and recovery. Guide him to still waters.

#7 – For A Strong Marriage and Family

Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church (1 Timothy 3:2-6)

Church history is littered with the skeletons of pastors whose marriages and families fell apart under the strain of pastoral ministry. And as 1 Timothy states, if a pastor can’t manage his family, how can he manage the church of God? Satan loves to sabotage a pastor’s family, and your pastor needs prayer that God will give him a healthy marriage and family.

Father, please give my pastor a supernaturally healthy marriage. Strengthen the bonds between him and his wife. Encourage them both in ministry. Give both of them wisdom to manage their family and to keep you at the center, not ministry. I also pray for their children that you would let them know you and follow you.

#8 – For Meaningful Friendships

A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24).

Pastoral ministry can be surprisingly lonely. Something about being in a position of leadership isolates the man. People look to him to be a teacher and leader, not be their close friend. Pastors need close friends who will encourage them, hold them accountable, and push them toward Christ.

Father, please give my pastor true, deep, sustaining friendships. Give him friends who stick closer than brothers. Who uphold him when he’s weary. Who help carry his burdens.

Sustained By Prayer

In some ways, pastors are sustained by the prayers of their people. Obviously, God is the one who ultimately sustains pastors, but one of his primary means is through the prayers of pastors.

When it comes to why you should pray for your pastor, take the words of Charles Spurgeon to heart:

No man can do me a truer kindness in this world than to pray for me.

Do your pastor a true kindness today. Pray for your pastor.

Prayer for Pastors

This prayer for pastors was developed to pray for the pastors in our county. A number of us pray it regularly. Praying this for your pastor is a powerful blessing and support. Prayer
Pastors of____________________, men and women of God who are committed to lead and tend the flocks of the Lord, I call your spirits to attention in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Press with your spirits into a new realm of the glory of God in your pastoring. Rise up in the Spirit. Stand up in a spirit of boldness and know that God is offering far more of Himself, far more of the expressed Kingdom of God, than you have experienced to this point. Let your hearts hunger for the “more”. Press in and acquire until you are fully satisfied in your spirits.

And then, stir up your appetites for even more of Him: the God of Creation, the King of Glory, the Spirit of Life and Truth.

Seek new depths of intimacy with Him. Seek and you shall find. Let your hearts cry out and He will meet you. Set aside that precious time for intimacy. Guard it as jealous lovers holding tight to the Prize.

In these times of close communion with the Lord, allow His healing balm to minister to yet unhealed wounds from the past that have held you back. Receive divine healing into deep, untouched places you may have forgotten were there. Soak up the comforting, healing Balm of Gilead into those places of pain you turned your back on, completely forgetting that they were there. Also receive healing into what you are painfully aware of: the disappointments, frustrations, betrayal.

Be healed, restored and strengthened in your times of sweet communion with El Shaddai, He who is all-sufficient to meet your needs. Put on the “new man” in a whole new way. Trust that He who has begun a good work in you will see it through to completion. Remember that you are God’s work of art created for good works in Christ Jesus. As you heal and go from strength to strength:
Throw off any grave clothes of the past that might attempt to cling: any sense of inadequacy, for you know that you can do all things through Christ, who strengthens you. You are more than conquerors and the limping, bruised body of Christ has need of over-comers like you.

Discard any sense of shame over past history for you are forgiven and robed in righteousness, and seated at the right hand of majesty in Christ Jesus.

Throw off the habit of negative thinking because all things are possible with God.

Slip out of any false identity. You are a king and a priest of your God. Settle for nothing less. Refuse timidity and expand with the spirit of boldness, love, and sound thinking. Walk in your kingly dominion, setting things in order in kingly fashion. As a priest, lavishly minister to God and to mankind.

Prepare for God to break through your present understanding of Church, your ministry, your Divine destiny. New insight is coming. You have the mind of Christ and contain the thoughts and intents of His heart. Prepare for change that will greatly advance Kingdom purposes.

These times of communion are potent, pregnant with Divine possibilities. Recognize the distractions, diversions that would cause you to forgo your face-to-face time with the Lord. Be a God-pleaser in this. God, your Lover, is jealous over your intimate times. Don’t allow anyone or anything to pressure you away from your Divine appointments. As you spend time in the secret place, receive a renewal of you call. You are a pastor, a shepherd after God’s own heart. Let your spirit expand with the heart of God and His purposes for your ministry. Become pregnant with His Word, His “sperma”. Prepare for a new birth of purpose and process in all that you do.

By the Spirit of Boldness, prepare to birth what the world has not seen before, what you have not seen before.

Prepare to birth what is in the heart of God for this hour.

Let God fill you with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. Receive the long-range vision of God for your life and your ministry. Be strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience to joyfully press into all that God has for you, paying the price for the prize that is promised.

This is the beginning of a new season.

Be filled afresh with the Holy Spirit of God. Embrace holiness. Release the fire of God that is in your bellies and in your bones. Let that fire grow and engulf your flocks. You are life-bearers, fire-bearers; you are Christ in the earth. Shrink not back! The world is seeking fire. You have it! Release it! Alleluia!

how to pray for pastors with scriptures

I am the daughter of a Baptist pastor. Most of my childhood was spent as a PK or living in seminary village. I believe the power of prayer for a pastor and his family is unspeakable.

“Prayer meetings were the arteries of the early church. Through them, life-sustaining power was derived. The condition of the church may be very accurately gauged by its prayer meetings. So is the prayer meeting a grace-ometer, and from it we may judge of the amount of divine working among a people. If God be near a church, it must pray. And if He be not there, one of die first tokens of His absence will be a slothfulness in prayer!”
Charles Haddon Spurgeon Everything by Prayer

For the month of August we are going to pray for our pastors and church staff. Our pastors NEED our prayers! I truly believe there is no greater gift we can give them than our prayers. The awesome thing about prayer is that it leads to love and unity. When we spend 31 days praying for someone, we love them more. I have seen that time and time again in my own life and in various relationships. If you take issue with something happening in your church, I challenge you to spend the next 31 days in PRAYER, specifically for your pastor, your worship leaders, your youth ministers…and see what God does! I guarantee you that your heart will be changed, to say the least.
