Either metaphorically or literally, we have all had times when we lose direction. There are times when we feel without purpose, feel confused, and feel unsure about the path we’re taking or where we’re truly going.Thankfully, you’re not the only one who has felt this way. To be honest, this is an age old problem. In fact, people have been struggling with this very issue for thousands of years. God knew we would have times when we felt lost. Yet, he didn’t leave us alone. We can take comfort in certain verses in the Bible where this very issue is addressed. God didn’t leave us unequipped or without an answer. Here are 10 verses that give direction even when you feel like you have none.
1. Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
2. Psalm 32:8
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
3. Psalm 37:23-24
The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.
4. Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
5. Isaiah 43:16-19
Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
6. Proverbs 16:9
The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.
7. Isaiah 30:21
And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.
8. Jeremiah 10:23
I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
9. Isaiah 48:17
Thus says the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.
10. Romans 8:28
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.
Such as Romans 8:28 and other verses, the Bible gives us several affirmations that no matter how lost we may feel, God can guide us in the right direction. If you’re feeling lost, I encourage you to pray or have others pray with you. God is never far away. Take comfort that in the end, God will work out all things for those who love Him.
Throughout Scripture we are reminded of God’s direction over our lives. He is our good Shepherd who leads us and He desires that we follow the path that leads to joy and contentment. When we pray for God’s guidance and for discernment through the Holy Spirit, we can rest assured that God will provide wisdom! We do not have to worry about our next step or about tomorrow because we know who guides our way! Do not rush your day without going before God to seek guidance!

Prayer for Guidance from the Holy Spirit
Lord, I pray you would move the Spirit more boldly in my life. I know that any sin can grieve and diminish the voice of the Spirit, and I pray against the temptation to sin. Help me crave your presence more than I crave sin. Help me grow in the fruit of the Spirit and so walk closer with Yourself. I pray for guidance from your Spirit- let your will and promises always be a meditation of my heart. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

Prayer for Guidance in the Day Ahead
Good morning, Lord! Today’s a new day, a chance for a new start. Yesterday is gone and with it any regrets, mistakes, or failures I may have experienced. It’s a good day to be glad and give thanks, and I do, Lord. Thank you for today, a new opportunity to love, give, and be all that you want me to be.
Today I want to start the day with you on my mind and in my heart. As I dress, let me wear the armor you’ve provided daily: the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the belt of truth, the shoes of peace, and the sword of the spirit—with prayer on my tongue: praise for you and petitions for those around me and those I meet.
Feed me today with your daily bread. As the Bread of Life, your food, like manna, will sustain me throughout any trials and hungers. Help me to set my thoughts on things above and to speak only what will help and encourage others. Keep me from putting my foot in my mouth, and help me guard the affections of my heart today, Lord. Make whatever work I do be marked with excellence rather than perfectionism, as I seek not to make a name, but to make a difference. Help me to treat each person I encounter as you would, with respect and love, forgiving others and asking for forgiveness myself when needed.
As I start this day, help me remember that I belong to you, and my desire is to act accordingly. Keep my feet from stumbling and my mind from wandering into distractions that could steal precious time and energy from the most important things you have designed for me. I’m proud to be your child, Lord. And I’m so grateful that you died for me—rising again on your own new morning—so that every day could be filled with the wonder of your love, the freedom of your Spirit, and the joy of knowing you.
I know earthly life is short and fleeting, Lord. But I want to live today as if it were the first or the last day of my life, giving thanks for every good and perfect gift you choose to give. Today, and every day, I want to live my life for you, Jesus. In your precious name, Amen.

A Prayer for Discernment and Wisdom When You Need God’s Direction
Lord, thank You for the people You have divinely placed in my life who speak holy truth, love and words of wisdom. Give me a heart of discernment to know when You are using someone to speak instruction into my heart and my circumstances, and give me the strength and courage to follow through with that advice, even when it’s hard. Fill me with peace in knowing that even if I take a wrong turn, Your purpose will prevail. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

How do we distinguish the voice of the Lord from the noise of the world? How do we receive God’s guidance in our lives? Pause with me for a moment and let’s think seriously about this. I believe this post entitled Insight Into God’s Word Must Become Top Priority is also relevant to this prayer topic.
Have we become so caught up in the affairs of the world that we are missing out on hearing the direction in which God want us to go or even what’s most important to our spiritual well being?
For those who have asked the question, “how do I hear from God or know His voice?” Here are some different ways that you can hear from God:
- Through the word of God (Bible) – David wrote in Psalm 119:105, “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.”
- By way of the Holy Spirit – God’s promise as found in John 16:13 indicates that the Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth.
- Through others – by way of someone praying for you and receiving a word from God on your behalf, through prophecy when God’s prophet bring you a word, a random or chance encounter with a stranger. (God is not limited to speaking through just Christians)
- Through God’s creation and the beauty of nature – Psalm 19:1-2 testifies about this, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.”
PRAYER FOR WHEN YOU HAVE LOST YOUR WAY AND NEED GUIDANCE AND DIRECTION
Lord you promised in your word that you will instruct me in the way that I should go and that when I seek you with all my heart, I will find you. So everything that I feel on the inside of me Lord I give them all to you. Bring peace to this troubled and wayward mind. Let your light shine where there is darkness, bring hope where there is despair and clarity where there is confusion at this time,
I cannot do this on my own and I will never be able to figure out this problem all by myself so I cast all of my cares upon you. Give me an understanding heart to judge and discern between good and evil, right and wrong and what your will is for my life.
Grant me discretion, and with your wisdom, preserve and keep me from making the wrong choices and decisions. Cause my understanding to become enlightened in things I do not know, do not understand, and in things that I cannot foresee.
Help me to discern your voice as the Good Shepherd and follow you and not the voice of the adversary. In every situation and circumstance of my life, give me instructions and direct my path.
I choose each day to talk with you and hear you speak with me, amen.
Prayer based on scrip. ref. Psalm 32:8; 1 Kings 3:9; Ephesians 1:18; John 10:5; John 16:13; Proverbs 2:11
We make an infinite number of decisions in life.
Some are clear-cut.
not so much.
What do we do when we don’t know what to do?
When there’s no apparent right answer and no obvious wrong one?
When we just want what God wants, but we have no idea what that is?
First, we remind ourselves of the truth that God doesn’t want His will to be a mystery to us.
And then we draw near to Him in faith, asking Him to guide us.
No, He won’t write the answer in the sky or tattoo it on your forehead.
But when the time is right, He’ll open doors…after He closes a few first. He’ll bring conversations, information, and opportunities your way. He’ll nudge impressions on your heart that He confirms in other ways.
His methods are limitless, but one thing is sure:
He will guide you.
Here are ten prayers for God’s direction, straight from God Himself in the pages of the Bible. Will you join me in praying the Scriptures for God’s direction?
Prayers for God’s Direction

2.)Claim God’s promise to instruct you, to teach you in the way you should go, and to counsel you with His eye upon you. (Psalm 32:8)
3.)Affirm to God that all your ways are pure in your own eyes, and that you have trouble seeing your own errors. Ask Him to “weigh your spirit” and examine your motives. (Proverbs 16:2)
4.)Echo Jesus’ words: “I seek not My own will but the will of Him who sent me.” Let God know that you just want what He wants, and ask Him to reveal that to you in His timing. (John 5:30)
