  • Wedding: September 2012

Hi Everyone,

I was hoping my fellow Catholic brides might be able to help me out. I will be getting married this September, and my fiancee and I are currently shopping around for wedding bands.

I have my heart set on a 7 diamond shared-prong wedding band which looks beautiful next to my plain solitaire e-ring. I currently don’t wear my e-ring when I am doing “dirty” jobs or going on outdoor adventures (cottaging, camping, rock climbing etc). I do not plan on wearing my wedding band during these times either, and I don’t want to wear it while travelling over-seas (just in case it gets lost, and I certainly don’t want to draw attention to myself).

I don’t want to be ringless, so I am thinking of purchasing another plain and simple wedding band which I can wear when I don’t/can’t wear my fancier e-ring and wedding band.

My question is, will a Catholic priest bless two wedding bands during the ceremony (which would actually be three because of my fiancee’s band)?  I plan on asking my priest to confirm, but I wanted to know if anyone out there had the same experience.

Thanks in advance!

I got my second band blessed after the wedding one random Sunday.  Our priest just blessed it after church.

I feel like it might have been a bit confusing and unweildy to have the extra ring there that day.

The last wedding I was at, they blessed the bride and groom’s wedding bands and the engagement ring, so I don’t see why they wouldn’t bless a second band for you.

Thanks for the quick responses. I didn’t even think of the possibility of having it blessed AFTER the ceremony.

I’ve been to a lot of weddings, and never have I seen the e-ring blessed as well. Usually the bride is wearing it on her right hand, or her Maid/Matron of Honor is holding on to it for her so it’s never blessed.  It would be special to have my e-ring blessed as well.

Wow! I was just thinking, that would be 4 rings in total, like SarahSmilesDec28 said, it does seem like it could be messy to have that many rings during the ceremony…

any other comments or experiences?

I know a bride who had two wedding bands (she wanted her ring to be symmetrical, so she had one for each side), and they treated them as if they were just one band (blessed both, then her husband slid both on her finger). You could do the same thing!

@Mo_Light:  I’d talk to your priest.  You may not need the third band blessed at the ceremony. You don’t need to wear your band all the time, and you can also get a new band blessed after the ceremony.  My Dad’s wedding ring has been wearing pretty thing after being married for over 30 years, so my Mom bought him a new band for Christmas.  I believe all he had to do to get it blessed was to talk to the priest after Mass.  I’m sure its no different than blessing a religious medal or a rosary.

I think you should feel free to get your other rings blessed before OR after the big day but if it helps we are getting my engagement ring and both of my wedding bands (top and bottom wrap) blessed on our wedding day, in addition to FI’s wedding band.

@Mo_Light:  I’m pretty sure the priest will just say one prayer over the rings, so you can have them all with you and he can bless them all together. Whether you want to juggle extra rings is up to you. Once I had a priest bless 20 candleholders for a service, and he didn’t have to say a different prayer for every ring. But if you want, the priest could bless it any time before or after the ceremony. Looking back, I’ve ambushed priests many times to have them bless things for me. They seem to be pretty happy whenever I ask, so I think they don’t mind.

Thanks for the responses and suggestions. I spoke with my priest and he indicated I could have the third band blessed anytime. He didn’t really want to do it during the ceremony because he said it can be confusing and might look kind of odd to my guests, but he wasn’t totally against it. I’ll probably just have the ring blessed after a mass one Sunday.
