One of the best tools that any recovering addict can keep at the ready is a strong sense of spirituality and a belief in a higher power. Recovery is by no means a simple or easy process, but it is possible for a recovering addict to survive and thrive, especially when they turn to the Bible in some of their more challenging times.
The Bible contains answers and inspiration for any situation or feeling that recovery could bring about. Here are some of the most helpful Bible verses that a recovering addict may turn to.
1. Psalm 27:4-6
One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
and set me high upon a rock.
Then my head will be exalted
above the enemies who surround me;
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make music to the Lord.
This verse is a wonderful reminder of the importance of forging a relationship with God and the fact that with God, it is possible to overcome even the most harrowing of situations.
2. John 16:33
I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.
There are many times in a recovering addict’s life when he must summon courage and find his strongest self. This is a reminder that obstacles are inevitable, but with God anything is possible.
3. 1 Peter 3:11
They must turn from evil and do good;
they must seek peace and pursue it.
Getting sober means constantly facing the demons that are triggers to use. In the path to become a more healthy and happy person, it is important to continue to seek things that bring peace and joy and to make the constant conscious decision to avoid decisions, people, and situations that are toxic.
4. James 4:10
Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
One of the most effective and important things a recovering addict can realize is that he must let go of the idea that he has control over everything. The reality is, of course, that there are countless things in life that no one has control over, and rather than deal with these things by using, it is important to recognize or own powerlessness and to let God take care of us. With this faith will come the strength to lead the lives we want.
5. Corinthians 4:5
Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of the heart. At that time each will receive their praise from God.
It is important that in the quest to become a healthier and more evolved person, that a conscious effort is made to avoid judging both one’s self and others. There is no place for judgement in recovery, and those who keep an open mind about themselves and the people they encounter are much more likely to have a closer relationship to God and to enjoy all of the help and love that they relationship will bring. With God, a recovering addict can and will find health.

12 Steps Found in Scripture from the Life Recovery Bible
1) We admitted we were powerless over alcohol – that our lives had become unmanageable.
Romans 7:18 “And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t.”
2) Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
Philippians 2:13 “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”
3) Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood him.
Luke 9:23 “Then he said to the crowd, if any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”
4) Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Lamentations 3:40 “Instead, let us test and examine our ways. Let us turn back to the Lord.”
5) Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

8) Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all.

9) Made a direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
Matthew 5: 23-24 “So if you are presenting a sacrifice at the altar in the Temple and you suddenly remember that someone has something against you, leave your sacrifice there at the alter. Go and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to God.”
10) Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
Romans 12:3 “Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.”
11) Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
Psalm 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
12) Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.
Galatians 6:1 “Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself.”

1 Corinthians 15:33
Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.”
Addiction to any substance usually starts from some source in our life who introduces us to it. This quote from Corinthians is extremely important as it prevents people from ever getting addicted in the first place. It asks us not to be misled by our desires and our company as they might corrupt our character. The more our character is compromised, the harder it becomes to return to the path of recovery.
1 Corinthians 6:12
12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything.
This is another very important quote from the book of Corinthians. As humans, we crave for freedom and believe we have the right to do anything. However, as this godly quote states, not everything that we can possibly do will be beneficial to us. Substance abuse is one such thing that people generally do as an act of rebellion. It is extrmely harmful to our bodies.
But what is more important about this quote is the second part of it. It states that though we have the freedom to do whatever we want, we shouldn’t let anything take away that freedom. This is a direct reference to how addicts become a slave to drugs or alcohol and cannot function without them.
Titus 2:12
12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.
As mentioned before, substance abuse usually starts because someone introduced something to us that might be addictive. This can be due to several reasons like escapism of just trying to fit in with a bunch of people. This quote teaches us to have high self-respect, correct values and a strong moral code. But more importantly, it teaches us to say no to such people who might drive us away from the path of recovery or who might lead us down a path of damnation. It also teaches us to say no to our urges and vices.
Philippians 4:13
13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.
People often look to God so they can get strength to face whatever obstacles they face. Addiction is one of the biggest obstacles that one can face in life and it is probably the toughest wall to climb over. If you have faith and believe in God, then you will get the strength to stay on the path of recovery. You will be strong enough to fight your urges and never fall to your vices ever again.
Matthew 6:13
13 And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one.’
This quote from the book of Matthew is one of the most famous quotes from the bible that you must have heard in several movies. The reason for addiction is generally the curiosity or temptation to see if something helps us escape reality or just to experience something unique for once. This temptation is what leads us down an evil path and thus we must avoid it at all costs. The quote asks the lord to give us strength to say no to temptation and to help us stay away from the evil forces in our lives.
