Prayers to help lose weight

Utilizing a prayer diet is a great way to lose weight.
Like many things in life that are difficult, praying to god can make
it easier to make positive changes in your life.

The most important aspect of a Prayer Diet, is consistency. You must pray on a daily basis, every morning, in order to keep your goals front of mind.
By starting this dialogue with god every morning, with his help, youll get the energy
to make the daily changes needed to become healthy by eating better and exercising.

Here is a great prayer example for you to say each morning to help focus the mind on your goals.

A Prayer to Lose Weight

Guide me lord, as I strive to lose weight
You are my light and my anchor, and with
you I know all things are possible.

Help me this day to make healthy choices and
give me the strength to fight against destructive
cravings that negatively effect my health.

You said, The LORD upholdeth all that fall,
and raiseth up all those that be bowed down.
As I bow before you today, raise me up
help me towards my goals.

I have been taught that anything that replaces
God is an idol. Help me to reject any unhealthy
habit in which I seek false comfort. For you
are my one true comfort and salvation.

In your name I pray, Amen.

A Prayer for Strength to Succeed

Lord, I come to You today to ask for affirmation. I have done all things and stayed away from all the food I am not supposed to have. Bless me, Father, for more strength to keep it this way.

Give me the grace to be stronger and encourage me to keep pushing on. With you, my God, nothing is impossible. I believe that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Thank you, Father for listening to my plea. I pray this with all Your angels. Amen.

A Prayer to Resist the Cravings

Today I pray to You to grant me the strength to stay away from anything that is unhealthy – alcohol, junk food, carbohydrates and mycotoxins.

I pray that this will help me lose the weight I have gained. Help me stay focused on being healthy and fit, dear God. I believe that I can do all things through Christ, your Son, who truly strengthens me.

May this enable me to steer away from all the unhealthy choices that I face each day. I pray that this strength will keep me focused on disciplining my body and do my workouts religiously. I pray that anything I do, eat or drink only be for Your greater glory.

I pray for a support group to push me towards the finish line. I ask for all these in this prayer, O Lord. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

prayers to help lose weight

I often receive emails for prayer for weight loss help. But the other day, I received a unique request:

“Could I ask how do I pray an extremely powerful prayer with 100% unwavering faith to ask the “I AM” to have me lose 40 kgs of weight healthy, supernaturally and miraculously?”

I wasn’t sure if I understood the request correctly, so I wrote back:

“It sounds like you are looking for a prayer that will help you lose weight without you having to do or change anything with your eating or exercise. Is that correct?”

“Yes!” He answered.

Here was my response in part and I hope it helps you too today:

I applaud you for wanting to achieve a healthy weight. I know how to pray to God for wisdom concerning weight loss, but I do not know a prayer that will enable you to lose weight without you having to do anything. Notice that I did not say that such a prayer doesn’t exist; I am just saying that I do not know one.

However, I can give you a prayer so that you can ask God for wisdom on the right daily actions to take to lose weight. Here is that prayer:

Gracious heavenly Father, you have said in your word that if anyone lacks wisdom, all they need to do is ask and you will give them wisdom liberally and without reproach (James 1:5). I come to you in the name of Jesus asking for wisdom to take care of myself so that I may glorify you in my body and my spirit (1 Corinthians 6:20). Give me the desire to choose foods that bring energy and vitality to my body and clarity to my mind. Give me enthusiasm to exercise so that I may strengthen my body and have the energy to do the things I need to do. Most of all, Lord, give me wisdom to put you first in my life because You have said that if I seek first your kingdom and all its righteousness, my needs will be taken care of. Thank you, Father, for giving me the gift of abundant wisdom today. Amen.

Now that you are asking God for wisdom, consider the wisdom that he has already given you. Here is a scripture to ponder:

“Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin (James 4:17).”

What good things do you already know to do that will help your body stay healthy? According to this scripture, you have a responsibility to do them. Write down all the wisdom that you already have about health. Then ask God daily to help you put it into action – starting today.

Even if you lost weight supernaturally, you will need wisdom to avoid regaining the weight you lost if poor health habits were the cause of your weight gain.

Do not ever give up striving to be healthy; that is the 100% way that you will never get what you want. At least if you are working on it, you are giving yourself a fighting chance!

My prayer for you today is that you put your faith into action every day. According to scripture, you will inherit the promises of God when you put faith and patience to work.

There are 2 ways we believe a person can lose weight:

  1. Eat 100% raw foods.  Most will not make this choice, but it is basically impossible to be fat under this plan.  Raw foods also keep away sickness, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc.
  2. Consume less per day than you burn (no matter which diet you choose).  Eat less and move/exercise more!  The easiest way to make sure you are eating less than you are burning is to keep track of it.  Most people do not realize how many “hidden calories” people are consuming all around them.  When you begin to keep track, your eyes will be opened.  There are many GREAT programs online that are FREE and easy to work with to help you achieve your weight loss goals.  A couple are:  and  check these out, search for others, find one that works for you!  Weight Watchers online is good too, but it isn’t free.

THE MATH –

One pound of body fat = 3500 calories.  Example – the average 170 pound man with moderate activity will burn 2200 calories per day.  If they want to lose one pound per week, they just need to consume 1700 calories.  This equals a 500 calorie deficit per day x 7 = 3500 calories = 1 pound lost!!

● MOTIVATION – It might seem hard or time-consuming to track each day.  But, it is much harder to carry around an extra 50+ pounds every day for the rest of your life.  Losing weight will make you feel great.  It will keep you healthier.  Always keep your goal in mind, and think about how much better you will feel when the WEIGHT IS GONE.

● IT GETS MUCH EASIER – Once you have tracked for about a month, it becomes easier.  You have established your routines and habits.  All you have to do is add foods and drinks from your favorites list that you have already built.  Once you have the habits of making healthier, lower calorie choices – you will gain confidence because you will see that this definitely works.  The more you do this – the easier it gets!

● ONLINE SETUP – Carefully consider your activity level when you are setting up your “calorie tracking” account.  Do you spend most of the day behind a desk?  Then choose “Sedentary”. If you choose a higher daily activity level than you really are then you will be given more calories to eat than should be given for that level.  This could (probably will) result in weight gain or stagnation.

● TRACK EVERYTHING – input everything you consume, even if it’s a 5 calorie drink, or breath mint.  🙂  Sounds silly, but little things can creep up on you & put you over.  It will also let you see things like sodium – and other things you do not want too much of.

● DIGITAL SCALE – To measure your foods, definitely buy a digital scale.  Weighing is MUCH EASIER than measuring.  It is more accurate than a measuring cup or spoon.  If you consume things like yogurt, fruit, butter, peanut butter, jelly, etc – a scale makes it simple.

● DAILY GOAL – start every day with confidence.  Make it your goal daily to hit your calorie goal (or a little under).  If you have a rough day & eat a little more, then “borrow” from the next day & eat less the next day.  (This should be the exception, not the rule.)

● EXERCISE – As the weight falls off, you will want to tone up those muscles and tighten that skin!  Make time every day to workout.  I recommend 5 days a week, Monday through Friday.  Take the weekend off to let your body recuperate and rest.  First thing in the morning is best.

● BEFORE BED – Try not to eat 2-3 hourse before you go to bed.  It is better for your digestive system and health.  It will also keep you from falling into the trap that most people do – eating lots of junk-food right before bed (like when they are watching TV or something).

● DRINK PURIFIED WATER – Without the proper liquids, your body will dehydrate and make you FEEL HUNGRY (maybe even starving).  A person like this will just keep eating.  It is usually recommended to drink ½ your body weight in ounces each day.  Example:  Someone who weighs 150 pounds should drink 75 ounces of water every day.  One thing that helps if you don’t like water is to add a little juice from a real lemon.  Add some Stevia for sweetening, and you have a healthy lemon-ade to help you achieve your water goal.  It helps some people to drink a big glass of water before a meal.  They will usually eat less – and feel more full.

● FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATIONS – it is very helpful to have a “buddy” to lose weight with.  A spouse is best, then you can both work together.  That’s where the online tracking comes in as well.  There is a support system with most online calorie tracker programs.  But, you must determine you will lose weight no matter who else does or doesn’t lose weight.  Avoid environments that you know will cause you to overeat.  

● FOOD CHOICES – Choose foods that give you the most “bang for your buck”.  Raw fruits and vegetables are very low in calories, so you can eat more food and feel more satisfied.  EXAMPLE – a hamburger, Large order of french fries, and a Large Soda  has over 1200 calories.  And most people would not be full with that.  On the other hand, a nice fresh salad with a lowfat dressing, some fresh fruit and the healthy lemon-ade (sweetened with stevia), would be less than 250 calories.  You would be satisfied, and still have a LOT of calories left for the day.  Make it a goal to eat the MOST FOOD you can and still hit your calorie goal.  You will NOT be able to stick with your plan for long if you are starving yourself to hit your calorie goal – because you just keep eating and drinking high calorie things.

● PATIENCE – Life is filled with ups and downs.  To lose weight you must be patient.  You must get over the times when you might feel emotionally down.  Your weight will FLUCTUATE up/down.  Sometimes it is because of being bloated or “water” weight.  That’s one reason why it is good to “weigh-in” at the same time every week (for example you will likely weigh less in the AM then at night).  Stay consistent with your plan, and over time you will be at your desired weight.  It is all about habits.  Good habits will always WIN in the end.

● POSITIVE MOTIVATION – Many times you might be discouraged or feel like giving up.  It takes consistency to keep your desired weight.  It is important to maintain an environment that is filled with faith and inspiration.  Listen to Positive Prayers, Positive Affirmations, and Verses of Victory CDs.  Especially Positive Affirmations for Your Health and Healing.  It is filled with motivation for making healthy choices.

Here are examples of some of our favorites.  You need to find foods that YOU LIKE – that are good for you, low in calories, and that you can stick with forever.

Raw Fruit Examples:

  • Most fruits are very low in calories for the amount of food you get.  It will give you natural energy
  • Medium Apple (2-3/4”) = 72 calories
  • Grapes (100g) = 67 calories
  • Medium Banana (7 to 7-7/8”) = 105 calories
  • Strawberries (100g) = 32 calories
  • Plum = 90 calories
  • Orange = 68 calories
  • Nectarine = 60 calories

Raw or cooked Vegetable Examples:

  • Celery (2 stalks 7.5 to 8”) = 11 calories
  • Salad with low calorie dressing.  Add fruit, vegetables, and even a low calorie meat if desired.
  • Frozen Plain Vegetables – heated in steamer is best (corn, peas, carrots, yams, beans, broccoli, etc).  Butter spray is lower calories.
  • Frozen Yams – cook, add pumpkin spice, a little stevia, butter spray, and whipped cream for a healthier treat (only about 100 total calories)

Snack foods or other Foods:

  • Milk and Cheese – If you like these, try to get used to low-fat versions.  The calories in dairy can be very high.
  • Bread – If you like bread, find it for one slice = about 50 calories.  Some have 100+.  Our favorite is Nature’s own.  It is also higher in fiber.
  • Sweeteners – sugar is extremely high in calories – and it often just makes you hungrier.  Stevia and other lower calorie sweeteners might be a better alternative for you.
  • If you like meat – a great choice is a boneless/skinless chicken breast cooked on a “George Foreman” type grill (cooks without the high calorie oil).  It is only about 125 calories for 5 ounces and the protein helps keep you full.  You can also add this to a salad.
  • Cottage cheese – 1/2 cup = 90 calories.  Add some fresh cut pineapple for a delicious treat.
  • Rice Cakes = usually 50 calories each.  Good with low-calorie spreads (like peanut butter and jelly).
  • Better’n Peanut Butter (found at Trader Joes) (1 TBS) = 50 calories
  • Plain NonFat Yogurt (1 cup) = 110 calories.  Great with fresh fruit mixed in and some low calorie sweetener (like stevia).
  • Cereal?  Many are HIGH in calories and filled with sugar.  For lower calories – Try more nutritious cereal with rice milk, almond milk, or soy milk.
  • Plain Oatmeal.  Add hot water, fresh fruit, and stevia!  High fiber & protein!
  • SNACKS?  For treats you just can’t do without, I would recommend 100 calorie snack packs. Just allow yourself only 1 or 2 a day.

High Calorie Foods (highly limit or try for low-calorie versions):

  • Packaged Foods – especially things like chips
  • Foods and drinks with a lot of sugar – like soda, candy, candy bars
  • Regular Dairy Products – consider low fat or no fat versions
  • Pasta
  • Breads, Rolls, bagels, and most breaded products
  • Meat – Beef is usually about the highest – consider boneless/skinless chicken breasts

Yes, it is possible to lose weight, get fit and healthier through prayer. I know prayer works with weight loss and health challenges: I’ve lost 150 pounds and maintained it almost 20 years only by the grace of God, eating more healthfully and through “re-creation.” Without God’s help, I would have been dead long ago.

There are so many weight loss diets, pills, diet “food” products, exercise equipment, clubs, gyms, surgical interventions, books, videos — it’s impossible to keep up with them all. I know about those, too. I tried a bunch of them and spent a lot of time and money, but they didn’t ultimately work because they’re mostly one-dimensional. A lot of them are outright bogus and only exist to get your money. What I learned through years of dieting and nutritional interventions, failing a lot, losing weight and gaining it back, was that I had to also put my mind and spiritual beliefs into practice. I couldn’t just focus on my body. I had to deal with my emotions, mental beliefs and improve my spiritual life as well.

Being someone who was addicted to overeating, I discovered nothing in this material world could ever satisfy me. Stuffing myself with excess food, stuffing my emotions down and avoiding moving at all costs just never satisfied. Being with God through prayer and being guided by Him is far more satisfying than any food, emotion or material thing. These days, my prayer consists of only seeking the will of God, through the Jesus Prayer, asking for His help in everything I am and do.

Twenty years ago, when I was desperate to lose weight, there was nothing available that combined body, mind and spiritual solutions. I had to discover my own methods, and after exhausting every diet imaginable, including diet pills and dangerous fasting, and lots of therapy and counseling, all that was left was to ask God for help. So I did, and miracles happened. I was able to focus my mind, resolve a traumatic, emotional past, and finally learn proper nutrition and enjoy moving my body on a regular basis. I reached out for God, and He answered my prayers.

Everything I needed came into place, and I began to slowly, consistently lose weight, enjoy recreation, express myself, and train and educate my mind. Because there wasn’t anything that combined spiritual weight loss with emotional work, logic and exercise, I wrote a book (“” target=”_hplink”>The Joy of Weight Loss: a Spiritual Guide to Easy Fitness”) and produced two DVDs on the subject (“Spiritual Guide to Weight Loss” and “Big Body Yoga”). I speak publicly about the power of prayer, to groups and in workshops, because so many people ask me how I lost so much weight and keep it off. I’ve also been a spiritual weight loss coach for many years. I want to help people as others helped me when I weighed 400 pounds.

It’s not enough to just pray away the pounds, though — we need to become healthier on all levels: in body, mind and spirit, together. Sound familiar? Not just the YMCA’s motto, or the Trinity, but Plato in his “Timaeus,” around B.C.E 363., taught us that human beings are a composite of not just physical matter, but of mind and spirit as well. The world is seeking balance, and so are we. Plato wrote that humans are like a chariot being pulled by two horses, with mind (intellect) as the charioteer in charge. One horse, the physical body that craves food and drink and pleasure, is unruly. The other horse, representing our higher aspects, is more manageable and calm. Most importantly, Plato reasoned that it was our spiritual self, connecting with our Creator through logic and prayer, that keeps us in balance. We need to nurture and manage all our parts, always moving toward union with God as the highest realm.

So, what to do if you’re struggling with overweight or obesity? Give up! Say a prayer right now, and put whatever faith you have into gear. Pray to God, saying out loud, “I need help, I cannot do this alone, please help me.” If you’re Christian, as I am, pray to Jesus Christ and put your weight problem in His mighty care. If you’re a believer or a member of another religion or tradition, ask your Creator as you know him (or her). If you’re atheist or non-religious, no problem! Put your problems into the care of your Higher Power, Higher Self or to Nature. You might also want to go to the next Twelve Step group, such as Overeater’s Anonymous. There you’ll find others who you can speak confidentially with, and share in prayer. Or your church, synagogue, temple or shrine.

By praying and giving up your weight and health problems and asking for help, you’re accomplishing many things: you are saying to God and the world that you believe, you’re admitting that you cannot do everything alone, you’re surrendering the burden and literally lifting the weight off your shoulders. As you’re praying, try to be in a peaceful, or even silent place. Enjoy the feeling of being with God in silence, connecting with prayer. Know that God or your Higher Power is not only with you, He’s inside you, hearing the prayer. Do this as often as possible, when waking up in the morning, during your daily work and before going to sleep.

Prayer is the first step in a program that’s balanced with nutritional education, eating well so that you’re satisfied and getting all the right nutrients in smaller quantities, feeling and expressing your emotions, and sharpening your mind and intellect.

With God, all things are possible — especially getting healthier, losing weight and becoming a whole, happy person.
