Revivals and awakenings are times of great outpouring of God’s Spirit. By definition they are excessive. It is like Christmas. And while the idea is appealing, Christmas doesn’t happen every day. In fact, life would be quite bizarre, excessive, and unbalanced if it did.

If we attempt to make the excessive nature of revivals normative, it can lead to an imbalance in our life, our walk with God, and particularly our understanding of the Holy Spirit’s ministry in us. Historically, it has at times done all of these. So, to gain all of the spiritual blessings of praying for, anticipating, and experiencing revival, while eliminating the negative side-effects of extremism, we want to review what the Spirit-filled life is.

Believers Are All Indwelt by the Spirit

When you became a Christian, Christ indwelled you through the person of the Holy Spirit. I know neither the how nor the where, but I do know that the Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence carries with it the assurance of our salvation. “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession” (Ephesians 1:13-14).

We are now God’s possession, and the Holy Spirit is, in effect, the down payment on His purchased property—that would be you. Like the idea expressed through the marriage ceremony, receiving Christ is a one-time decision. We don’t awake each morning to a fresh need to say, “I do”; once was enough. Having received Christ, we became children of God. “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

In theory, I could tell my parents that I no longer wished to be in their family, but I can never change the reality that I am their son. It’s an established fact on the basis of my birth. I can sever our fellowship but not our relationship. And as there was not one thing we did to earn our salvation, so there is nothing we can ever do to lose it—we are eternally Christ’s. But the Holy Spirit is more than simply an assurance of our salvation. It is through the Spirit that God enables and empowers us to live the Christian life.

The Spirit Comes to Glorify Christ

As we experience the blessings of the Spirit, we can lose sight of Jesus—and we never want to do that. We need to remember that the Spirit works in us to glorify Christ.

“When he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you” (John 16:13-14).

The Spirit-filled life is the Christ-centered, Christ- directed, life.

Walking with the Spirit

Walking is a process and not an event.1 This is how the event of revival can throw off our thinking concerning the Spirit- filled life. Clearly there are events, moments in time, when God empowers us in a special way; that’s what revival is. But the normative Christian life is predominantly a process, a walk. And the Spirit’s influence in our lives is typically not an overwhelming, overpowering presence but a more subtle influence. If we get an overpowering experience—Score! Icing on the cake! Christmas morning! It’s an additive, but not essential, blessing.

The normative Christian life is not an overpowering event but is daily seeking to do those things that increase the Spirit’s influence and decrease the hindrances to that influence. So how, exactly, does the Holy Spirit exert control and influence over our lives, and what is our role in the process? Perhaps the most helpful passage in Scripture for answering these questions is this one in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians:

Be very careful … how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:15-20)

One is compelled to ask, “What does getting drunk on wine have to do with being filled with the Spirit?” Well, obviously they are opposite alternatives, but they must share some base of similarity, or else why couple them together? The link between them, or the similarity they share, is in the idea of influence. They are both foreign entities that, when internalized, influence our behavior.

In fact, this is not the only time Scripture places them side by side. In the coming of the Holy Spirit, it was suspected that the Spirit-filled believers “had too much wine” (Acts 2:13), because of the similarity of influence.

Of course, there are many important differences between alcohol and the Holy Spirit. Alcohol’s influence leads to greater enslavement, while the Spirit gives great freedom. Alcohol eclipses our personality, while the Spirit reanimates it. And Satan uses alcohol to control us as God controls us through the Spirit. Still, alcohol provides an example of a foreign influence (albeit a bad one) that can affect our will and behavior.

As demonstrated by alcohol, control is always a question of degrees. There are things we can do that hinder the Spirit’s influence and things we can do to increase sensitivity to the Spirit’s leading. This is at the heart of walking in step—or being filled—with the Spirit. (The word “filled” means filled like a sail, not filled like a cup. When we think about the sail metaphor, we rightly think about adjusting ourselves to catch the existing wind of the Spirit. When we think about filling a cup, we wrongly think about increasing the amount of the Spirit like pouring in more of a drink.)

So, what constitutes the Spirit-filled life? What leads to the Spirit having maximum influence over our lives? This is not comprehensive, but what follow are the primary vehicles affecting the Spirit’s influence upon our thoughts, heart, will, and emotions.


How does one become more drunk? (Or should I say drunkerer?) One consumes more alcohol. In the case of the Holy Spirit, we have all of Him that we will ever have. So the major determinant of the Spirit’s influence is how much of us we let Him consume, meaning how much of our lives we allow Him to control.

The question we must ask ourselves is this: Do we desire to live for Christ in every area of our life (dating, vocation, relationships, and so on)? We sometimes call this a “lordship” decision.

It is often when we relinquish these areas, like a drain coming unclogged, that we experience a special empowerment, or increased influence of the Lord. This frequently happens during revival. While the new degree of influence can create a powerful experience, equilibrium soon follows, and the Spirit’s influence becomes normative as we continue to stay yielded to the Lord’s direction. Again, following Paul’s alcohol analogy, for a consistent drinker or smoker, alcohol and nicotine in the bloodstream at some point normalizes, sans elation.

Lordship is a declaration to follow Christ wherever He leads, to whatever end. This commitment, like any commitment, initiates an ongoing process. Over time we’ll discover deeper roots of sin and uncover areas disconnected from His control. In submitting these areas to Christ, we continue in, and affirm, His lordship and our commitment to live under it.


Throughout the day, week, and year there are times when we make choices to sin. Sin is seizure of control. We take control of the direction of our life and steer it toward our sinful wants and desires. Confession cleanses and removes the barrier of sin, and it places the control of our life back under the Spirit’s subtle but determining influence.

Reliance (Unceasing Prayer)

Throughout each day we experience neediness, weakness, and lack in the form of anxiety, loneliness, insecurity, trials, unholy desires, negative feelings, and so on. All of us have a natural inclination to meet these needs through reliance on something. Watch cigarette smokers. Every time they sense a need in their life, they light up. If they feel lonely, they light up. If they feel scared or nervous, they light up. If they need confidence, they light up. And while we might not smoke, we can find ourselves doing the same thing with food, lust, shopping, music, coffee, or any number of other things.

Choosing throughout the day to turn to the Lord for wisdom, patience, empowerment, companionship, security, confidence, and every other need is called humble reliance. As the smoker is aided by nicotine’s influence, so the believer can experience the Spirit’s influence. Instead of turning to whatever it is we turn to, we connect with God: “Oh Lord, I’m nervous. Will You please strengthen me?” “Oh Lord, will You please give me wisdom?” All day long, like smoking a pack of cigarettes, we turn to the Lord. This is the idea of reliance and it is vital to experiencing the Spirit’s influence.

(I apologize for all the drinking and smoking analogies, but the Scripture is the foundation for them, and they are helpful in understanding influence.)

Renewing of Our Minds

The Spirit’s influence is always refreshed, directed, and supported by prayer and time in the Scriptures. Through both of these He leads and renews our thinking.

Praise and Thanksgiving

If you’ve ever been to a college party or bar, you’ll get this concept rather easily. It’s the idea of atmosphere: the room is dark; the music is pulsing; clothes and conversation are sexually suggestive; and alcohol sands down inhibitions. An atmosphere has been created that’s conducive to sin. Though no one forces you to drink, lust, or gossip, they don’t have to. Just bask in the music and the glow of the lava lamp long enough, and you want to.

Going back to our Spirit-filled passage (Ephesians 5:19- 20) again, notice what it says: “Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The description Paul gave is of an environment conducive to the empowering influence of the Holy Spirit. As we worship, give thanks, praise God, and sing, our hearts become like that party, only in a very good way. An environment is created where the Lord can freely reign, a channel for Him to affect our thoughts, actions, and emotions.


Last, it is in community with other Christians that we experience a dynamic of the Spirit-filled life that we can never experience alone, because we encounter the indwelling Spirit through the lives of others, and through them we are energized, empowered, and directed.

In Summary

Participating in these activities daily constitutes walking in step with the Spirit, or walking in the Spirit. The degree to which we participate is the degree to which the Spirit has influence upon us. Whether the Spirit’s influence is a slow IV drip or a flowing river depends on our participation in the spiritual life.

Revival, an excessive overpowering sense of the Spirit’s presence, is not within our hands to control. We seek God in prayer to do such mighty works, especially for those who most desperately need it, such as nominal Christians and unbelievers. But whether we are empowered by the Spirit and renewed daily … well, that is in our control.

We can forget these foundational truths about walking in the Spirit, and in some cases maybe we never learned them. What follows is called the Satisfied Prayer Experience, which provides a prayerful reflection and review of these ideas in the context of group prayer. There is an opportunity to confess barriers to the Spirit’s control. And there
are opportunities to praise, worship, and present all of ourselves to Christ’s lordship, making sure that we are being maximally influenced and are under the Spirit’s control. I strongly suggest that you go through it with the others you have called to join you in praying for revival and awakening.


NOTE: This prayer experience is intended to be adaptable to your prayer group. It can be as short as 40 minutes or extended to two hours, depending on how you use the optional sections. Don’t feel constrained to follow this format. Adapt it to your group and environment. May God give you and your group a rich time celebrating and experiencing the powerful presence of his Spirit!

Divide into groups of three or four. We don’t want groups to be too large. We want everyone to actively participate and experience all God has for you during this time of prayer.


Satisfaction: (n.) fulfillment of one’s needs, longing or desires

Begin by thinking back over the last 30 days. What three words would you use to describe your Christian life during the past month? Share these with one another, along with a brief explanation of why you chose those words.

Are you satisfied with your experience? Do you desire more? Usually, answers will reflect a broad range from deeply dissatisfied, to somewhat dissatisfied, to generally feeling OK, to very satisfied. But I suspect that almost all of us would admit that we desire more in our relationship with God.

Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” John goes on to tell us, “By this he meant the Spirit” (John 7:37-39). The Spirit is the source of the truly satisfying life, quenching our deepest thirsts and longings. It is the gift of the Spirit that will be the focus of our prayer together.


Divine: (adj) given by God

God has given us his Spirit so that we can experience intimacy with him and enjoy all he has for us. The Holy Spirit is the source of our deepest satisfaction.

If time is short, skip to 1 Corinthian 2:12 below.

Optional:  Five times in the “Farewell Discourse” Jesus spoke of the gift of the Spirit. Turn in groups of three or four, and use the promises of these verses as a basis of short conversational sentences of praise and worship. (It can be helpful to have these passages projected on screen or printed on a hand out.)

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. (John 14:16,17)

But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. (John 14:26)

When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me. And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning. (John 15:26, 27)

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. (John 16:7-11)

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you. (John 16:13-15)

Paul applies the Spirit’s ministry of revealing truth and wisdom in his first letter to the Corinthian believers. (1 Corinthians 2:9-3:4). He states,

We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. (1 Corinthians 2:12)

In your groups of three or four, use short sentence prayers to thank God for many specific things that God has given us in Christ and that the Spirit has helped you understand and experience. Be specific. For example,  “Thank you, Lord, for enabling me to know and experience your love shed abroad in my heart. I know and understand your love through your Spirit.”  Or,  “Thank you, Lord, that by your Spirit I have come to know your wisdom and knowledge. You have enlightened my heart with your Spirit.”


Danger: (n.) a thing that may cause injury, loss or pain

We cannot experience intimacy with God and enjoy all he has for us if we fail to depend on His Spirit. Our failures are often rooted in one of two problems. The Christian life is like a road and we can slip into the ditch on either side.

In the one ditch, we begin to trust our own efforts and strength to live the Christian life. This is of course a source of great frustration.

Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? (Galatians 3:3)

When we discover the futility of that, we can cross over to the other ditch. We may give up and succumb to our own selfish desires, seeking to please ourselves rather than God.

For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. (Galatians 5:17)

Then, like the Corinthians, our lives begin to manifest symptoms of the flesh and worldliness.

Brothers, I could not address you as spiritual but as worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? (1 Corinthians 3:1-3)

Spend the next segment of time in silent confession. Examine your life for symptoms of self-dependence or self-centered living. Confess them to God and claim his forgiveness according to 1 John 1:9.


Journey: (n.) any course from one experience to another

As we learn to walk in the Spirit, we increasingly experience intimacy with God and enjoy all He has for us. Walking in the Spirit is a moment-by-moment lifestyle, learning to depend upon the Holy Spirit for his abundant resources as a way of life.

So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. (Galatians 5:16, 25)

Optional. This section works best with a mature group of believers familiar with these concepts.

Turn in your groups and share testimonies of how you first learned to walk in the Spirit?

As we walk in the Spirit, we experience intimacy with God and all he has for us. The fruit of the Spirit is one description of what we experience through the Spirit.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22,23)

Think about the challenges you are currently facing. What do you need to experience most at this time? Remember, it is the role of the Spirit to produce it in your life. Pray in your groups, claiming the fruit you seek (such as, love for specific relationships, joy for specific trials, etc.) As you become aware of more areas where your attitudes or responses have fallen short (Romans 3:23) and been displeasing to God, breathe spiritually: Exhale by confessing your sins, thanking God for his forgiveness. Inhale by expressing your dependence upon the Spirit.


Empower: (v.) to give ability to

We are filled with the Spirit by faith, enabling us to experience intimacy with God and enjoy all he has for us. The essence of the Christian life is what God does in and through us, not what we do for God. Christ’s life is reproduced in the believer by the power of the Holy Spirit. By faith, we experience God’s power through the Spirit.

Paul prayed that his beloved Ephesian believers would experience these realities.

I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. (Ephesians 3:16,17)

In your groups, pray Paul’s request for yourself and each other. Pray that you would fully experience the Spirit’s strengthening with power in your inner being, so that Christ would be living his life in and through you.

Optional:  In your groups, pray for others you care for or minister to by name. Pray that they would experience the empowering of the Spirit and know the love of God.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:18,19)


Turning point: time when a decisive change occurs

It is our desire that all of us would know with confidence that we are experiencing the fullness of the Spirit today and throughout the days ahead. As we conclude this segment of prayer, examine your hearts one more time. Ask yourself these three questions:

  • Am I genuinely surrendering control of my life to the Lord Jesus Christ? (Romans 12:1,2)
  • Have I confessed my sins, according to 1 John 1:9, and genuinely turned from them and back to God?
  • Am I sincerely desiring to be filled, that is directed and empowered by the Holy Spirit? (John 7:37-39)

If you confidently answer yes to each question, silently reaffirm your faith in the Spirit’s filling in your life according to his COMMAND (Ephesians 5:18) and PROMISE (1 John 5:14,15). Ask God to fill you with his Spirit, enabling you to understand and experience in greater ways your intimacy with him and your enjoyment of all he has for you.

If, in the integrity of your heart, you are unable to answer yes to the above questions, let us encourage you to take some additional time alone to be honest with God about the issues that are blocking your experience of his love and provision. Then go to a trusted leader or friend and share with them what you are struggling with, asking them to pray with you and for you. We need each other!

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. (Hebrews 3:13,14)

NOTE: Provide each participant with a copy of the Satisfied? booklet. Encourage them to review it, to pray through it as you have today and to share with others.

Throughout life, we try to reach a new level of our existence, but very few of us manage this. Although there are many methods and meditation techniques that help us know ourselves better, no one can teach us how to find the absolute truth.

Of course, over the years, there were many spiritual mentors who tried helping us to better understand the meaning of life, why things happen and how to reach to that state of contentment and reconciliation. However, each person is different and each experience is unique.

Transition body signs are a new state of consciousness, these aren’t diseases, just signs received from the Divinity to make us understand that we are becoming different. If we know and understand these conditions, we can observe that they will pass without having to walk through hospitals.

These spiritual awakening signs help us realize whether we have reached another level of our being or not.

Diet changes

Major changes in your diet – such as fluctuating between feeling hungry all the time to not being hungry. Food begins to taste differently. Changes in eating habits, especially healthier and natural foods: no meat, no alcohol, no coffee. This can mean you need more light foods to purify your body with fruits and vegetables. We attract what we need to heal. You have started eating different foods that you have never liked, unable to eat no more than a light meal or eat little and rarely. The human body is naturally in tune with the Universe, with the planet and all life forms. Eating natural foods in their natural state is a great first sign of spiritual awakening process. Listen to what your body craves and needs.

DNA changes

The changes in your body-house occur because your DNA is being restructured. As these changes appear, you will experience feelings of spinning and loss of emotional centering. These changes will be very intense and will be very challenging to you during the awakening process. This is the process of clearing out heavy energy that no longer serves us and can transform our physical bodies and elevate our consciousness.

A carousel full of problems

The problems from the past seem to return. People have some unpleasant experiences, feel as if they are caught in a carousel that is repeating the same movements, and everything becomes tiresome. The emotional charge is strong and only some people manage to determine the true source of the problems they face. There is no way out in this day to day „routine”, the only thing that can be done is to accept matters as they are and to find a way to appreciate these experiences, no matter how bad they are because only this way they will be overcome.

Positive and negative feelings

Emotions sometimes take antagonistic intensities and proportions, whatever they may be, from sadness to anger, from discouragement and despair to the most alive excitement and explosive joy. Magnified emotions and things that wouldn’t normally bother you may really intensify because repressed emotions are surfacing, as they were suppressed and now need to be released. The emotions are still lying dormant until they become triggered. It’s time to let them go.

Loneliness feelings

You may feel like you just don’t fit in the world anymore. It is the beginning of the awakening process. You may feel like you don’t belong in this world and want to spend more and more time alone. Many relationships may disintegrate and this is appropriate. Awakening process is usually a very lonely process as it removes you from mass consciousness and ushers you into introspection and self-awareness.

Unexpected mood changes

Unexpected mood changes are due to stress, problems, worries or unpleasant experiences in the past, but they are closely related to the heart chakra. People who suddenly move from anger to happiness, from ecstasy to depression, from nervousness to calming down or suddenly cry, feel an intense pressure in the chest and the pain is not bearable. It is very important to accept these feelings as they are and states should be allowed to pass in a natural way. Emotions are very strong and have an important role. They help these people to be aware of their own existence and they guide their steps and heart to the superior being, who will help them discover their real needs in life.


The feeling that you have to make a change in your life is very strong, but most people are capped in the situation they have and are afraid to step forward. Complaints related to work, to love life, to family or social activity appear, but these people have no concentration power and they don’t do much with their lives. They are “wandering” on the same known path in the hope that change will come from elsewhere.

Feeling a bit crazy

You think you have gone a little bit “crazy” because like nothing, you no longer adapt to anything, you feel strange not only among people around or familiar, but often you experience this in your own family, with your own children, and it may disturb, upset and give you the impression that you don’t think properly anymore.


Communication is one of the most important and valuable factors in a relationship. Having a spiritual based relationship signifies that the relationship bond exists at the soul level. To give the right energy to your partner, the trick is to get in touch with what was natural in the beginning. As we begin to free ourselves from self judgments, expectations and old defense patterns, a new self emerges from the dust of our previous identity. What this means is that a whole new level of intimacy and relationship is now possible, the kind of relationship of the heart, a spiritual relationship which embraces the totality of our being and transcends roles and personal needs.

Events during sleep

People who feel they lack energy, don’t have a good sleep during the night or who wake up constantly for no reason should not neglect these signs. The changes that occur during the night have often a strong impact on the following day, and people experiencing such events must learn to conserve energy and to face a difficult day even after just a few hours of sleep. Even when sleeping normally, you can end up being excessively worn out and tired when you’ve done nothing physically significant.

Spiritual dreams

Since your Higher Self often communicates with us most strongly when we are facing a transition or in crisis, it is essential to begin remember any dream you had, even in times when you feel unsettled and confused – as the most important information may be coming to you in those times. Waking up is the same as what is called becoming spiritually conscious, knowing yourself as the awareness behind your emotions, sense perceptions and thoughts. As your vibration becomes higher, you are able to receive a clearer guidance and direct guidance from your Higher Self because it vibrates at a higher rate.

Lack of concentration

Mental confusion, inability to concentrate, temporary loss of certain words, names, terms, suddenly you don’t know or don’t remember a person’s name, an event or you start a phrase and don’t remember what you wanted to say.

Top of the head activity

People who feel tingling or stinging in this area mustn’t ignore these signs. Energy vibrations often feel so powerful that people feel a great pressure in the crown, but many of these sensations can be explained on the account of stress or fatigue. It is very important for people not to alarm themselves because energy fluctuations are the consequences of the Sahasrara chakra track energy opening from the top of the head, and this means they have an opened connection with the Universe and Divinity.

Finding Your Way

You feel that you want to do nothing. You are in the rest period, you start over. Your body knows what it needs. When you begin to touch the higher realms, „making things happen”and „doing” turn into atrophying as the freshness energies support the feminine enjoyment, receptivity, creation and care of itself. Ask the Universe to “bring” you what you need while you feel good and have fun!

Increased sensitivity

Severe sensitivity to sounds, smells, light, heat, cold, energy, or other people around you, the feeling that you can’t tolerate the presence, in fact you are sensitive to their body energy which doesn’t have the same frequency with you, it’s not even close to be tolerated by your bio field energy yet. Like with any of these symptoms, if they feel very intense you will most probably benefit from a daily meditation, which can help you bring yourself into balance.

Your mind and your fears block what we saw or do not accept this could be real. In order to allow yourself to be a clairvoyant, you need to release those negative feelings and this could be done just sitting in meditation and focusing your attention on your breathing. Become aware of it and enjoy it. You can meditate on yourself, or your fear, or your anger, or your peace, or your joy.

All these states bring you much suffering, but it is your only way to spiritual ascension.

When you actually understand what is happening to you, these symptoms will disappear leaving a calm state that you’ve never felt before.


It is important to notice the signs when they occur, but it isn’t necessary to hurry and throw yourself to something that seems filled with spirituality. Don’t be too eager to let someone else take care of your spirit and be cautious when it comes to receiving with open arms every holy man that comes your way.

There are some basic guidelines that you can follow:

True spirituality always creates a loving energy. It is always positive and never negative. It never promotes violence and murder, under any circumstances, and it values life as the most precious thing we have.

The true spiritual masters will never say, directly or indirectly, explicitly or implicitly, how distinguished they are, how much “magic” they can do, how you can save your soul, how you can heal. They don’t focus on their own spirituality, all the more of their holiness. Simply, you’ll feel it.

On the physical plane, Earth has begun it’s own spiritual awakening – the process of moving from a fear based to a love based environment. Although right now, everything can appear rather chaotic, that’s the process – and it gets worse before it gets better. I believe the worst is behind us…  A spiritual awakening is happening all around us and within us right now!

An ever increasing number of people have chosen to awaken spiritually! This awakening of our connection to divine energy happens different for everyone. For some people it can be a slow and steady process, while for or others it is a spontaneous spiritual awakening.

As I mentioned, real spiritual awakening is not all sunshine and rainbows. It can involve removing some very ugly, and painful trapped negative emotions and energies from our past. With your continued new found awareness, allow for these old karmic energies to be released and replaced with the light. Resistance to moving forward causes depression or pain – a physical manifestation of the energetic resistance.

By going with the flow, we allow a beautiful spiritual awakening within us and ultimately add to the positive collective vibration of the Universe. This process allows us to live our best life and embrace the power of positivity available to us at all times through divine energy.

Over the years, I have been experiencing a steady, very intense spiritual awakening. My life has completely transformed in every area!  Life is truly AMAZING! I have connected with the essence of my true self. As I research and talk to others about their spiritual awakening, I find that we all share very similar characteristics and events.

However, some people are experiencing an awakening and don’t even know it. I decided to intently create this outline of the most common signs  you may be experiencing a spiritual awakening, so that you can more purposely direct your energy to the growth and expansion of it.  Please do add to the conversation in the comments below if you have one you can add. 🙂

Do you hold the same beliefs today that you had 5 or 10 years ago?

Everyone who experiences a spiritual awakening releases old belief systems and ways of living. We begin to think outside the box and question our physical reality that we once thought was “normal”.

We feel more comfortable breaking social norms and embracing freedom. We all have free will and as we begin to spiritually awaken more and more we realize that we may have not been exercising that right as freely as we could.
For some of us, we escaped a mental prison. But as we evolve in our spiritual journey we realize the mental prison was wide open the whole time.

2. You want more freedom and less “stuff”.

You’ve been finding peace in living more simply. Instead of buying more and filling ever corner of your house with material possessions, you find yourself cleaning out old things and selling or donating them.

You have decided that less is more.  This allows the heavy burden of “stuff” to be released from your physical life, but in doing so, it also creates an energetic release of old “stuff”. Afterwards the feeling of lightness is profound that we (consciously or subconsciously) do it more often until we find we own less and have less desire to buy more.

True love and happiness cannot be found in things or from having more. Everlasting happiness comes from within.

3. A sudden desire or change in a job or career.

You’re being called to fulfill your life purpose right now. Are you listening?

Most people experiencing a spiritual awakening have experienced a changed in job or career. If you haven’t, you probably have a deep burning desire to.  Are you allowing fear to hold you back?

Let go of any resistance, step out in faith and just do it. You don’t have to know all the details right now. That’s the secret in life! We aren’t always supposed to know all the little details – the Universe and divine energy takes care of that for us.

If you’ve already done this, you probably are loving life right now! Your new transition was probably not easy, but well worth it. Keep going, you’ll continued to be called to step up and be more. The Universe LOVES healthy expansion!

4. You find yourself drawn to inspiration and personal development.

During your spiritual awakening you are being guided towards your best self. Who we are and who we are going to be can be seen in our daily habits. As we are drawn to the light, we look to surround ourselves with inspiration, positivity and personal development activities. This could be in the form of physical or spiritual. For example, you may be drawn to reading self help books, practicing yoga, meditation, praying, personal development seminars, running, walking, going to church, listening to audio books, etc.

We are drawn to Nature because it is part of us. It allows us to step away from the material world we have built up and truly connect with divine energy, our higher power, God, Source, the Universe (insert your name of choice).

Nature also speaks and communicates to us if we listen closely. This is a relationship anyone can build and people who have a spiritual awakening do. We are only really beginning to understand our deep connection with nature. Over the years, Bill Moyers has spoken with many of the world’s leading authors, philosophers and theologians about their spiritual connection to nature and all it entails.

6. You experience unusual sleep patterns.

Some people who are experiencing a spiritual awakening have trouble falling asleep. What is going on inside keeps you awake. It’s a burning desire and some people know how to direct that energy while others aren’t sure and this is what is primarily keep you awake at night.  Most report that they either have trouble falling asleep or they awaken at 2:00 and 4:00 AM.

If you’re experiencing unusual sleep patterns, it’s okay. Just don’t lay there and worry. There’s a lot of work going on within you. It’s a natural process. The best thing to do is go do whatever it is that is calling you to do- for some it is writing.

All in all, it’s best to just go back to sleep. If you can’t go back to sleep, try playing music. I use an app on my phone that has meditations and binaural beats. It’s very healing and I fall right to sleep. Lavender, melatonin or even a quick glass of wine helps too (tips from my 82 year old grandma).

7. You have increased Self Talk and/or talk with your Creator.

Although we don’t all admit it, to some degree we all do a little “self talk.” It helps us to make sense of what is going on. At times we can be our own therapist. It’s actually very healthy because only YOU truly know what YOU need. It’s an illusion that we think we need to ask someone outside of ourselves.

If you’re going through a spiritual awakening, you’ll find yourself doing even more self talk. When you are alone, you may be chattering away with yourself for minutes at a time, maybe even more. It’s okay – you aren’t crazy!
A new level of communication is taking place within you.

You are allowing yourself access to your higher self – the part of you that truly knows all the answers to your own path. This is the extension of you that is connected to divine energy. The best thing to do is to continue to allow it. The conversations will increase, and they will become more fluid, more coherent and more insightful. If you find yourself getting philosophical, heck, write it down or record it and listen to it later. Free, highly insightful therapy at it’s best.

8.  Experiencing Synchronicity

While these more than mere coincident events, called synchronicity, have been always been happening, more recently your spiritual awakening has made you aware of the connectedness that is going on around you.

Synchronicity is the experience of meaningful, related events that are unlikely to be mere coincidence.  The concept of synchronicity was first described by Carl Jung, a Swiss Psychologist, in the 1920s.

These synchronizations have meaning; they are usually guiding us to towards are best path, but sometimes they are just giving us a reminder that we are on the right path. “Hello wonderful being, you’re doing an AMAZING job!”

Synchronicity commonly reveals itself in number sequences around us, because numerology is deeply woven into creation. You may see number patterns like 11:11, 111, 333, 555, etc. They are each unique to our own path and circumstances. I personally have experienced this starting when I was 16 – the beginning of my spiritual awakening. Well-known, best selling Author and spiritual teacher, Doreen Virtue also believes we are being guided by numbers.

When we truly understand the powerful meaning and importance of synchronicity in our life, we can use it to propel us forward and make better decisions. Synchronicity is always guiding us, it’s up to us to pay attention!

9. A greater feeling of ONENESS

We are all connected! As we experience our own individual spiritual awakening, we realize we are not defined by our physical body. We are so much more and our energy extends outside of us. Ever person, place and thing is in our life for a reason – we have drawn it to us in some way.

This connectedness creates a deep knowing within that we are apart of everything and everything is apart of us. We are a part of our local community as much as we are apart of the cosmos.

Things that were once just mere coincidence become meaningful to us. We begin to truly understand the meaning and importance of synchronicity in our life. Synchronicity is guiding us, it’s up to us to pay attention!

10. A desire to eat healthier and take better care of our body.

Our body is the temple of our soul. If we want to become light we must eat light. Foods filled with light energy and high nutrition are raw foods grown from the Earth. The more of these foods you put in your body the healthier you will become.

It is only natural to be drawn to healthy eating. We are born healthy eaters, it’s the outside influence of the culture that we are born in that program us to eat unhealthy. Junk food yields a much higher profit for corporations.

Most people who are experiencing a true spiritual awakening are being drawn to healthier ways of eating. We all have our opinion on what’s best, but no one can disagree that raw, untouched, uncooked, fruits and vegetables from our Mother Earth is always the best choice.

11. Feelings of sadness or deep emotion.

Along this journey you are experiencing intermittent feelings of deep, inner sadness. Sometimes you may know exactly why and you can release and replace it with love, other times, you may have no idea.

This is something we all go through from time to time. While you many not always know the reason, rest assured it has a purpose.  You are releasing your past, harbored negative energy. As the emotions come up, let them go and allow divine light to fill every space it contained. EVERY SINGLE ONE! Don’t allow even a speck to remain, because you deserve the emotional freedom that’s on the other side.

Although this process can be difficult, embrace it, bid your permanent farewell and be grateful for the release. Afterward, your spirit will be lightened and you will be filled with even more love and positive, divine energy.

What is a Spiritual Awakening?

So, what is the process of spiritual awakening, and how can you know that you’ve experienced one?

When we have a spiritual awakening, we literally “wake up” to life. We begin to question our old beliefs, habits, and ideals, and see that there is much more to life than what we have been taught.

It is common to ask questions such as, “Why am I here?” “What is the purpose of my life?” “What happens after death?” “Why do good people suffer?” and other questions that examine the fundamental nature of life during your awakening. Spiritual awakenings stir the deepest and most significant questions within us that we have been putting off asking or have been too scared to touch.

If you’ve experienced a spiritual awakening, you might crave to find the meaning of your life and whether there is a “higher state” of being. Searching for God, or for the Divine, is a common desire during this experience.

Why Do Spiritual Awakenings Happen?

So, why do spiritual awakenings happen in the first place?

Spiritual awakenings happen as a natural product of soulful maturity. Soulful maturity is the process of inner growth, maturation, and expansion. Just as everything in life grows, so too does our connection with our Souls.

The more you connect to your Souls, the more you experience transformation. The more you come to embody your Soul, the more you taste true and lasting joy, peace, fulfillment, freedom, and love.

While the spiritual awakening process can feel painful and disturbing at first, it ultimately helps you to live a more meaningful life. The sensation that your life doesn’t make sense anymore is the product of having all of your former beliefs, desires, and paradigms challenged, and often disproven. This is traumatic, but a necessary part of your expansion.

What Triggers the Spiritual Awakening Process?

You might be curious to know what activates spiritual awakenings.

The answer is that a lot of circumstances can! There really is no one answer.

Spiritual awakenings can happen at any moment or period in your life. They can be spontaneous, but they can also be triggered by major life changes, illnesses, tragedies, and traumas such as life-threatening illnesses, car accidents, divorces, war, midlife crises, and much more.

Generally speaking, the spiritual awakening process happens in conjunction with an experience known as The Dark Night of the Soul. The Dark Night of the Soul is a period in life when we feel completely cut off from God/Divinity. The more conscious we become of the intense suffering in the world, the more chance the experience of The Dark Night of the Soul is likely to occur.

If you’re highly sensitive to the suffering of others and are a deep thinker by nature, it is possible that you have gone through, or are currently going through, a Dark Night of the Soul. Likely, this experience has triggered a spiritual awakening within you – or the pursuit to make sense of life, and end the suffering within yourself and others.
