GRIEF

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds

up their wounds.”

(Psalm 147:3)

Grief : deep mental suffering, as that arising

from bereavement

Grief  is a natural human emotion that is experienced when a significant loss occurs—especially the loss of a loved one.  Grief is not necessarily an indication of a lack of faith , but can be an expression of the depth of love we had for someone.

Being a Christian does not rescue us from the pain  of loss.  Jesus Himself was familiar with grief , and wept when His friend Lazarus died because of His great love for him.1

The Bible clearly “makes room” for grief  in the hearts of man; there is a time to grieve and a time to mourn.2  The disciples of Jesus ex-

“Where have you laid him?” he asked.  “Come and see, Lord,”

they replied.  Jesus wept.  Then the Jews said,

“See how he loved him!”

(John 11:34-36)1

There is a time for everything, and a season for every

activity under heaven :  a time to be born and a time

to die…a time to weep and a time to laugh…

a time to mourn and a time to dance…

(Ecclesiastes 3:1-2,4)2

The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.

They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised to life.”  And the disciples were filled with grief .

(Matthew 17:23)3

perienced grief  when He told them He was going to die,3,4  they also mourned immediately after His death on the cross.5  However, Jesus also told His disciples that their grief  would eventually turn to joy  when He returned to be with them.6,7

As Christians, we will all experience grief  when our loved ones die;  but we are to maintain a sense of hope , even in the midst of our grief  and sorrow .8  Remember, our grief  in this world is only temporary,9 it will not extend into eternity.10,11

Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, “Where are you going?”  Because I have said these things,

you are filled with grief .

(John 16:5-6)4

She went and told those who had been with him

and who were mourning and weeping.

(Mark 16:10)5

So with you:  Now is your time of grief , but I will see you again

and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy .

(John 16:22)6

I tell you the truth , you will weep and mourn while the world

rejoices.  You will grieve, but your grief  will turn to joy .

(John 16:20)7

Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those

who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who have

no hope . We believe that Jesus died and rose again and

so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those

who have fallen asleep in him.

(1 Thessalonians 4:13-14)8

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you

may have had to suffer  grief  in all kinds of trials.

(1 Peter 1:6)9

He will wipe every tear from their eyes.  There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain , for the old order

of things has passed away.

(Revelation 21:4)10

Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

(Luke 6:21)11

Our hope  comes from the fact that Jesus Christ defeated death.12,13 Nothing will ever replace the loss of our loved ones on this earth, but nothing will ever surpass our reunion with them in heaven  as we spend eternity with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.14

If you are grieving and brokenhearted, keep turning to God.15 Let God help wipe away your tears and heal you wounds.16,17 He promises He will be close to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit.18

The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

(1 Corinthians 15:26)12

When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable,

and the mortal with immortality, then the saying

that is written will come true:

“Death  has been swallowed up in victory.”

(1 Corinthians 15:54)13

They will enter into Zion with singing; everlasting joy  will

crown their heads.  Gladness and joy  will overtake them,

and sorrow  and sighing will flee away.

(Isaiah 35:10)14

The Spirit helps us in our weakness .  We do not know what

we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes

for us with groans that words cannot express.

(Romans 8:26)15

The Sovereign Lord will wipe away

the tears from all faces.

(Isaiah 25:8)16

He heals the brokenhearted and

binds up their wounds.

(Psalm 147:3)17

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted

and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

(Psalm 34:18)18

If you know someone who is grieving or mourning, reach out to him or her in Christian love.19,20  As Christians, we are to carry each other’s burdens.21

Rejoice with those who rejoice;

mourn with those who mourn.

(Romans 12:15)19

By this all men will know that you are my disciples,

if you love one another.

(John 13:35)20

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way

you will fulfill the law of Christ.

(Galatians 6:2)21

Bible Verses About Death

One of the most difficult things to deal with in life is the death of a family member or a close friend.

Even for Christians, dying is a part of life on earth because the Bible tells us that the wages of sin is death.

However, unlike those that do not believe, Christians have a blessed hope.

Thanks to God, who gave His beloved Son to die for our sins, we can rest assured that heaven awaits those who die in Christ.

Here are some Bible verses about dying and death that are appropriate for a religious funeral or memorial service.

Old Testament Scriptures For Funerals – Death

Genesis 3:19   “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.”

Job 14:14  “If a man dies, shall he live again?  All the days of my service I would wait, till my renewal should come.”

Psalm 23:4  “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Psalm 39:4  “O Lord, make me know my end and what is the measure of my days; let me know how fleeting I am!”

Psalm 48:14  “For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even to the end.”

Psalm 116:15  “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.”

Psalm 146:4  “When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish.”

Proverbs 14:32  “When calamity comes, the wicked are brought down, but even in death the righteous have a refuge.”

Ecclesiastes 3:1-4  “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:  a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.”

Isaiah 25:8  “He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken.”

Isaiah 53:4-5  “Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.  But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

Hosea 13:14  “I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death.  Where, O death, are your plagues?  Where, O grave, is your destruction?”

New Testament Scriptures For Funerals – Death

John 10:27-29  “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.” (Jesus speaking)

John 11:23-26  “Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’  Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.’  Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life.  Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?’”

Romans 6:23  “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Romans 8:31-39  “What, then, shall we say in response to these things?  If God is for us, who can be against us?  He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?  Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen?  It is God who justifies.  Who then is the one who condemns?  No one.  Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.  Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?  As it is written:  ‘For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.’  No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.  For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Romans 14:8  For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord.   So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.”

1 Corinthians 15:20-23  But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.  For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead.  For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.  But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.”

1 Corinthians 15:54-57  When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: ‘Death is swallowed up in victory.’  ‘O death, where is your victory?  O death, where is your sting?’  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

John 14:1-4  “Do not let your hearts be troubled.  You believe in God]; believe also in me.  My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Romans 8:16-17  “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.”

1 Corinthians 15:52-57  “In a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.  For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.  For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.  When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.  Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.  But thanks be to God!  He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Philippians 3:20-21  But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.”

1 Thessalonians 4:13-18  “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.  According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.  For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.  After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.  Therefore encourage one another with these words.”

2 Timothy 4:7-8  “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

James 1:12  “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

1 Peter 1:3-9  “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade.  This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.  These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.  Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

1 John 3:1-2   “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.  The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.  Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”

Revelation 21:1-4  “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.  And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.  He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.’”

Revelation 22:13  “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
