Dear intercessors,
We all want God to answer our prayers. We believe in the power of prayer, but when it comes down to our own individual lives and our own problems, we often don’t have the faith to believe God will answer. The times we are living in are difficult. We are often trapped by our unbelief and fear, but God is preparing us for the end-time harvest. He wants to enlarge our territory. He wants to bless us with increase, because His nature is to care and bestow divine favor on us.
We are the ones who limit Him because of our lack of trust and our fear of stepping out in faith. The truth is that the things we do for God should be outside of our own ability and should be trusting in His supernatural ability. When we back away from dependence and trust in God, we are not living by faith. He wants us to trust and obey His Word. He wants us to be strong and courageous. We need to be willing to attempt things big enough that unless God’s steps in, we are sure to fail. This is the kind of trust and dependence He is looking for in our life. We need not be shaken. He can break through every obstacle. He is the God of the impossible!
A Prayer for Trusting God in Hard Times
Lord, I thank You that You are the God of the impossible. You can do anything. I want to trust in Your ability and not my own. Teach me to see difficulties in my life from Your perspective. Help me to focus on You and Your power. I want to be like Joshua and Caleb who believed in a good report and focused on You even in hard circumstances (Numbers 14:7-9). My responsibility is to carefully read, trust, and obey Your Word. Today I bring before You this difficulty in my life . Help me not to fear but to trust You in this situation. I declare my faith in Your ability to fulfill Your promises to me. You will fight for me and win the battles in my life. You are mighty, powerful, righteous and true.
I have nothing to fear with You on my side. I will be strong and courageous even in hard times. I will not be terrified or discouraged, for the Lord my God will be with me wherever I go (Joshua 1:9). You will never leave me or forsake me (Joshua 1:5). I do not need to figure everything out. You already know the best plan for my life. I will not try any man-made method to do only what You can do. Show me Your supernatural power. Teach me how to walk by faith and pray breakthrough prayers. I choose to have faith in Your ability to break through every obstacle in my life. Just like Joshua, You will give me the land and every place where my feet step (Joshua 1:3). “Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever” (Psalm 44:5-8).
“Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. Prayer during hard times is key to spiritual growth. If you are going to make it through your trial it’s going to take every ounce of faith you have. There will be days when you want to quit, days when you think you are going to lose your mind, and days when you are sure you have reached your limit.
As long as we are on this side of heaven there will be trials and hard times. God is always there but sometimes we feel alone on the journey.
I have personal experience walking through each of these four stages of spiritual growth. The times I’ve spent in prayer during hard times have been the seasons where my faith grew the most. It has not been easy but it has always been well worth the pain and struggles. I like to think of this journey like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly.
I’m going to use the life cycle of a butterfly to describe each of the stages of spiritual growth. Let’s see where you may be in your journey.

Before the Journey Begins
You are living life unaware of how hard things really are. Yes, you are struggling with a few things but that’s just a part of life. One day you are doing just fine and the next a spilled cup of cereal sends you over the edge. It’s like the rug has been pulled out from under you and you never saw it coming.
This is typically the point where you begin to try to fix things for yourself. Things can’t really be all that bad; it’s just a bad day or week. If you just figure out where you went wrong then you can correct it and get back on course. There’s just one problem. The more you try to make things right the worse they get.
This is usually the point where you realize you are in over your head. You know that you need to focus on praying during this hard time but you aren’t sure where to start. You aren’t sure how to pray or if God is even listening. You spend a lot of time telling God that you’re giving things over to Him but you also spend just as much time taking them back.
Eventually, you get to the point where you just can’t take it anymore. There’s nothing more you can do so you give up. When you reach your breaking point that’s when God can finally step in and take over.
This is when the journey from despair to deliverance begins.
STAGE ONE: ARISE
(CATERPILLAR EGGS ARE LAID)
This stage is hard. It involves a complete shift in mindset. You have to stop believing the lies about yourself, God, and the enemy. You’ll spend a lot of time crying and questioning everything that you thought you knew about God and His plans for you. This is a great time to start journaling. Write down everything you think you know about God, yourself, the enemy, and your circumstance. Then start reading what the Bible has to say about each one.
I remember when I first started to really understand who God is and what that meant for me and my situation. I was frustrated at all the things I didn’t know. I was angry about the abuse I’d gone through and all the lies I’d been fed about myself and my God. That anger fueled my desire for the truth. The more I learned, the more peace and strength I gained.
When a butterfly lays its eggs you can already see the caterpillar inside. It hasn’t hatched yet but you can already see what it will become. The eggs are also laid on a leaf so that they have what they need to grow when they hatch.
This is the stage where you need to embrace your identity as a prayer warrior. I know that you may not feel like a warrior but you are. You already have everything you need to make it through this trial. God has already equipped you with the weapons you need to win this war.
STAGE TWO: GROW
(THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR)
This stage is characterized by a lot of spiritual growth and biblical disciplines. Once you embrace your identity as a prayer warrior you are ready to learn the basics on prayer during hard times. This is when you need to be in the Word daily, reading, studying and memorizing scripture. This is when you need to be praying daily and reaching out to your community.
Caterpillars don’t stay in this stage for very long. All they do is eat and eat and eat. Preparing for the time when they begin to transform into a butterfly.
I couldn’t get enough of God during this time in my journey. I wanted to read and pray and be in church all the time. The more I learned about God the more I wanted to learn. The more I read, the more I wanted to read. I began to dig really deep into the Truth and I finally started to feel free.
Learning how to study the Word for myself meant that no one could ever use scripture to control or abuse me ever again. Memorizing verses meant that I could stand up to the enemy when he tried to paralyze me with fear. Being a part of a community meant that I was no longer isolated and alone. I found my strength. I found my voice. And I found my fight.
STAGE THREE: FIGHT
(CATERPILLAR GOES INTO A CHRYSALIS AND BEGINS TO TRANSFORM)
I’m going to be really honest here and tell you that stage three is hard. I read somewhere that when a butterfly goes into its chrysalis it has to completely liquify itself as part of the transformation. It becomes completely undone and unrecognizable before it becomes beautiful.
This is the stage where you have to really put up or shut up. Are you going to believe God and stand on His Word or are you going to quit?
This is when you have to face all your demons and doubts. This is when you have to learn to take every thought captive and manage your emotions for good. You have to face your fears, doubts, and feelings of overwhelm and shame.
When things seem to go from bad to worse you have to keep trusting and keep standing. You have to remember all the things you learned in stages one and two. They will carry you through this hard stage. In my experience, stage three lasts the longest. But it’s also where you will see the most growth.
STAGE FOUR: DREAM
(Butterfly Emerges and Flies Away)
This is the stage where you can start to breathe a little. You may still be in the middle of your trial but you are confident that you will have the victory. You know who you are and whose you are. You have conquered your emotions and battled doubts. At this point, you are at peace knowing that God is in control.
You are ready to start dreaming and hoping again! And the sky is the limit. You are not afraid to ask God for the impossible because you know that with Him all things are possible.
My favorite part about this stage is being able to encourage others. Sharing your testimony is a great way to help those who are in the first three stages to keep pressing in and holding on. You can show others how prayer during hard times is key to spiritual growth and victory.

A week or so ago I put together a massive post with well over a hundred bible verses about money and talked about how we need to make sure that we always put God first in our lives before money – and everything else.
We can easily allow money to become our master, and God can quickly move to the background if we’re not careful.
No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. Matthew 6:24
One thing that occurred to me in the midst of listing all those verses, however, is that I never really touched on a topic that seems to be especially important right now in the midst of a double dip recession when so many people are having a hard time. The idea of looking to God for strength in the midst of hard times.

Where Do We Find Strength?
Where do we find our strength? In the Lord our God!
Psalm 46:1-3 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.
Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe.
Nehemiah 8:10 Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

Don’t Worry Or Fear, Find Your Strength In Him
It can be so easy to give into worry, fear and despair, but with Him we can find strength, and look forward to wonderful things. He gives us hope!
Isaiah 43:1-3 Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord you God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
Luke 12:25-26 Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? 26 Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?
Philippians 4:6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

God Gives Us A Spirit Of Strength And Power
Through faith in Christ we are given a spirit of power, love and discipline, and for that reason we have nothing to fear. We can hold onto his promises and be confident that he’ll see us through even the darkest of days.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
Psalm 138:3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.
Psalm 16:8 I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Hard Times May Come, But He’s There With Us Through Them All
Though we aren’t promised an easy life, we are told that Christ will be there with us when we believe in Him, that he won’t give us more than we can handle with His help, and even our hard times can be used to glorify God.
2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
Philippians 4: 12-13 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation . . . . I can do everything through him who gives me strength.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.
Isaiah 40:29 He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.
1 Peter 5: 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
Hebrews 4:16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Strength In Christ Our Lord And Savior
As the verses above illustrate, we’re told to call on Jesus Christ, and that he will hear us and give us strength, hope and a grace sufficient to carry us through. He will be our ever present help when we’re in need, and he can give us a peace that passes all understanding. For me that’s extremely encouraging.

Definitely worth reading The last few years have been difficult-lost my husband, a parent, change in finances, and more. I needed to feel God’s presence and faith that I can meet tomorrow head-on. I will be revisiting this book often.

It isn’t easy, fun, or even what we feel capable of trying when life is difficult. It isn’t a methodical list Linda Evans Shepherd is a woman of prayer, a beloved daughter of God. She, like many Christians, has endured severe crises that could have crushed her had she struggled through them on her own. Each chapter includes Bible-based prayers, truths about our Lord that He would have us to know, a Trip to the Oasis – prayers and praises through the Psalms applicable to the chapter subject, and a specific Prayer Experience to draw closer to the heart of God applicable to the situation. There are links to on-line teachings related to each chapter. At the end of the book is a study that includes questions for each chapter in which one can enter into alone or with a Bible study group. My Review:
Praising God during the hard times as well as in the good times proves to be very difficult. But the further you get to God’s loving presence, you will soon see how easy it is to love him, and declare His mighty name even in the darkest of situations. God is good ALL the time, not just in the good times that He blesses us with. Many of us struggle with faith and trust in God but as Christians we long to have that peace and that piece of the puzzle that seems so foreign to many believers.
The author has such a sweet, life affirming, and inspiring word to reach those of us that struggle to see God in all things. He is our source of strength and hope. Without Him we will struggle till our dying breathe. My husband and I are right now in our church getting ready for a major move, the move is one of member of a church to ministerial intern for 2 years until my husband will then become an ordained minister. We have overcome and still face many more things to over come in this process of conditioning us for a Pastorate role. It has been a gradual process, but oh so painful, as well.
God has been using this transition time as a time of stripping away the old, set in our ways selves to bring us in line to what He wanted to do in our lives for this new time in our lives. It has been amazing looking back to see the changes that we weren’t sure we could even go through. He is such a loving Father that even though it was hard at times, we did our best not to falter. This book is a great encouragement to those in the troubling, hard times that occur every day. The author speaks right to the heart in a very loving, true way!

Praying through Hard Times reaches into your life like a helping hand when a flash flood enters and tries to sweep you away. It is based on the solid foundation of Jesus Christ. It will help a person recognize God’s presence in their life, expecially during the waiting times when many feel like giving up on God. Linda Evans Shepherd gets personal with the reader as she relates her disappointments and hurts and shares how God managed to give her a change of attitude if not circumstances. She relates how what seemed to be horrible treatment by certain insensitive people hurt her feelings greatly, yet over time she recognized that if those things had not happened that she never would have discovered the special calling to a writing and speaking ministry.
I am thankful to have Praying through Hard Times for its hopeful message that prayer does make a tremendous difference. It is a wonderful resource to use when words escape the thought process because a problem seems so over-whelming. That can be for yourself or for someone else who asks you to pray for them. I do a lot of prayer intercession myself, and this book is a help for me to see more clearly ways I can pray. It is a good book for those who are newly learning about praying. They will advance much faster in the maturity of their prayer life with this book as a guide.
The cover of the book is beautiful as it reminds of God being the Creator of all things good. He gives His children good gifts, and I consider Praying through Hard Times to be one of His excellent gifts communicated through the talents of Linda Evans Shepherd. I have already thought of several people who are in the middle of waiting for prayers to be answered who could benefit greatly from the wisdom and prayers in this book.

I began marking places within the book that I found especially good and ended up marking three quarters of the entire book! Each chapter offered lessons on how to handle tough areas of life. One of the best parts of the book, is that Ms. Shepherd teaches practical ways of not only surviving difficult areas but how to breakthrough and overcome those hindrances which prevent believers from moving to the next level.
In sharing her own life stories and the challenges she has faced with her daughter’s disabilities, Ms. Shepherd shows that prayer does matter even when the prayers aren’t answered in the way we thought they should be. She shows how accepting God on His terms and seeing the beautiful things He brings from the ashes of disappointment and sorrow build a deeper faith.
One of my favorite stories is about a bat that gets caught in the building where the women are worshipping and how God shows Ms. Shepherd a lesson in spiritual warfare in the crazy unexpected event. She says, “Here’s what I learned from this experience: just because you walk with God doesn’t mean circumstances will never drive you batty. But the key is to focus more deeply on God.” She goes on to talk about the consequences of not focusing on God.
Praying Through the Hard Times is a great read and one that I would recommend. The book and its teaching are helpful in showing how to handle the hard times when they come and how to prevent additional heartache before they come.

Throughout each chapter, we are given sound biblical principles’ and prayers to help us to walk through our own painful hard times to help us to draw closer to God than we have ever been. And in those times… we rest in His promises.

I highly recommend this devotional to anyone, whether in a valley or freshly on a mountain top. It directs us to God’s promises and our knowledge of who He is and whose we are rather than limiting us to the way we are feeling. When we are faced with debilitating sorrow or worry, it takes a clear, confident message to get through the fog of emotion, and the author makes it known that she has walked on this path herself. The whole package makes the reader feel that a Christian friend is sharing what she has learned in her own struggles. During times of crisis, Christians all turn to God. Sometimes we even question God’s reasons for allowing bad things to happen. When we really need comfort, we need to know how to pray. This book gives the reader a kind of “road map” with directions on reaching out to God during difficult times.
In this book, you will find prayers for many different circumstances. There is also a Bible Study at the end of the book which reviews each chapter and asks the reader to answer questions about what they have read. Some of the chapters include help with praying for hope and healing, turning over your troubles to God, and finding peace through prayer. Throughout the book, there are prayers and Bible verses which are very helpful. If you are seeking peace and understanding in your life, “Praying Through Hard Times” will be a very valuable addition to your bookshelf.
I highly recommend this book. It helped me to learn how to pray when I’m not exactly sure what to pray or how to do it. It will lead you through trying times and will give you hope when you feel hopeless.

It was great to see how she drew me in with her own personal struggles, pointed me toward God’s Word and what He says, all while encouraging, inspiring, and coming alongside me as the reader through my own difficulties. She doesn’t sugarcoat things but talks about how everyone who lives in this world will eventually face difficulties. This is a book that is great to read alone or with a group of friends, one friend, or a whole Bible study. I have already pointed another friend toward this book as she is facing uncertainty in her life as well. So many people are hurting – this is a great book to recommend to help them keep focused on the One who truly can help and heal.

Great for a group or personal study.
Two of my favorite take-aways:”The more you focus on your circumstances, the greater the chance your circumstances can and will hurt you.” And,”You’re going to get a miracle whether He changes your circumstances or He changes you. The key is to seek God’s face with your whole heart.”

Another great study guide by Linda Evans Shepherd. During the hard times is when we see where we most hand things over to God give him all our burdens and worries. Easy to say but not so easy to do. Through this book Linda shows us how we can do this. Even when we are in our deepest valley we can draw closer to God. Prayer is the big key. Our prayers may not even be answered the way we think they should. God does know what is best for our lives.
I love how Linda has written the book. Discussion, Prayer experience, their are also video sites to go too. In the back of the book is a Bible study and Discussion Guide. Bible verses to help out through out.
I would recommend it as a group study. I really enjoyed the study.
