Prayer for hopeless feeling

What do your eyes see today? Are you unable to see anything but problems, troubles, chaos, messiness? Are you finding it difficult to pray for comfort, perspective, hope and order? We all encounter seemingly hopeless situations at times, but that is why Christ came and why he gave us the Holy Spirit – because we need hope in the deepest parts of us! If you’re having trouble getting your words to rise above the clutter, pray along with these words now!

Jesus, some days my world seems to be spinning out of control. Everywhere I look, I see chaos—even in my own life. There are days where I long to just throw in the towel and say, “Enough.” Where can I turn? Who can I talk to?

You’re the only one I know who will truly listen, Lord. And I know you have the answers. But I can’t seem to find them. I long to see a little clearing in this tunnel. I need a little hope, Jesus. Your Word tells me I can come to you for that hope and that you won’t disappoint, that your load is easy and your burden light.

Give me a new perspective, Lord, and blow away the cobwebs that keep cluttering my mind and my vision. Every time I’m tempted to become discouraged or depressed because of negative events or situations, help me turn my eyes on you. Help me to remember all the times you’ve been there for me, and all the ways you have brought me through difficult times. I forget to thank you sometimes, but I am so grateful for your faithfulness.

When things look hopeless, I will hope in you. You died to give us hope, not only eternally, so we could live forever with you, forgiven and free. But you also provide a way daily for us to live above the cares of this world. Thank you for reminding me of that in your Word. Your spirit lives in us—in me—as your child and follower. Sometimes I forget that!

Thank you for understanding me and loving me, just as I am. And thank you for accepting me even when I was a hopeless case—just as we all were at one time. Perfect people in a perfect world would have no need of your gift of hope. With my eyes on you, I want to see life as you see it. I don’t want to waste time being negative or withdrawn from others, focusing only on what can’t be or what might never change. Teach me how to find contentment even if my circumstances remain the same. With your perspective, I can push past the impossible and find the strength and courage to believe that no matter what happens, your hope will lift me to a higher plane—where joy and purpose reign again.

In Your precious name that is above all names and all this mess, Amen.

prayer for hopeless feeling

A Prayer for When You Feel Hopeless
By Beth Ann Baus

Editor’s Note: If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid of terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6)

It’s often hard to pray when you’re consumed with hopelessness or even suicidal thoughts. In fact, while praying is the most important thing you can do, it’s often the very last thing you want to do. It will require self-discipline and self-control. It will require a strength that can only come from God. For this reason, it’s a good idea to plan ahead. Write a prayer when you’re able to express your pain and thought process, then you’ll have it ready to read the next time the hopeless thoughts come. Perhaps the following prayer can be of some help.

Father God, the darkness has taken hold of me and I can’t find my way back to the light. In this moment, ending it all seems like the best option, the only option, the only way to escape. Yet, there is something in me that wants your light to snuff out the darkness. So I ask, Lord, that you would do just that. You are the only light that can shine in the darkness.

I know when I’m consumed with thoughts of death I’m believing lies from the enemy. I ask Lord that you would remind me of these truths: when I feel alone, you are with me; when I feel invisible, you see me; when I feel worthless, my value is knowing you and being known by you.

I often feel out of place in this world. I don’t fit in and I’m not sure I want to. Remind me that this world is not my home and while, as your child, I will never fit in here, my time here isn’t over. Not yet. Please, give me the desire to live.

When I feel like I don’t matter, remind me that I was created with purpose. When I don’t know or understand why I feel the way I feel – remind me that you know the depth of pain in my heart, in my body and in my being. You know me better than I know myself… and yet you still love me.

Remind me that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and I am worth more than I know. Remind me that this life is not mine to take. Remind me that suicide is not the only option. Remind me to love you and to love myself.

Remind me that Jesus did not come to earth and die for me so that I could live a defeated life. Help me to desire life and to live fully in you. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13, NIV)

Forrest Gump is filled with memorable quotes, but for me two stand out among all the rest. “Run, Forrest! Run!” plays in my head when I work to reach a goal. But the one that becomes my prayer when I’m feeling hopeless is the one I want to talk about today.

“Dear God, make me a bird. So I could fly far. Far far away from here.” Jenny, Forrest Gump

Far too many feel hopeless in their marriages. One wife feeling hopeless is too many.

I’ve sat alone in the church balcony with tears streaming down my face. I’ve received flowers when all I desired was to feel like he wanted to come home to me. I’ve looked at my marriage and wondered if there was any reason to hope.

Maybe your husband is backslidden. Maybe he doesn’t love you in your language. Or you can’t agree on a parenting strategy. Maybe he’s walked out the door.

For all the reasons you may feel hopeless, I want to offer you hope. Hope in the only One who will never disappoint.

A Prayer for the Wife Feeling Hopeless:

Thank you for filling me with hope by the power of Your Holy Spirit. A hope that’s rooted in the truth of who You are.

Help me to keep my eyes focused on You and to reach for Your hand.

You will never leave me. And in You, Jesus, I have all I need.

In Jesus’ precious Name, Amen.
