Prayer for awakening

We live in a world that needs awakening. What is awakening? It is a powerful movement of the Spirit of God to convert many people to Christ and to renew in His church a zeal for His truth, for spiritual growth, and for missions. This was R.C. Sproul’s passion, and in the final years of his life, he was constantly in prayer for awakening. He prayed and labored to see nonbelievers and the church itself awakened to the true character of God. So vital is this concern to Ligonier Ministries, we made awakening the theme of our 2018 National Conference and dedicated the entire year to pray for awakening.

When just two men–Paul and Silas–prayed, the earth itself shook (Acts 16:25–26). To help as many people as possible, we produced this free prayer guide. Download it today at, find it in the PrayerMate app, or order the prayer booklet in packs of ten to share with your friends, family, and church community.

To use the guide, find the prayer that corresponds to the current week. Each week of the month focuses on a different group to pray for, starting with you and your family and expanding to larger communities. Please share your desire to #PrayForAwakening on social media.

  • Week 1: Pray that you and your family would offer yourselves to God as living sacrifices, wholly committed to His will. “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.” (Rom. 12:1)
  • Week 2: Pray that you would be willing to speak God’s Word to the people in your life and that God would supply opportunities to do so. “You shall teach diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (Deut. 6:7)
  • Week 3: Pray that God would bring the leaders of your city and your nation to faith in Christ. “The king’s heart is a stream of water in the hand of the Lord; he turns it wherever he will.” (Prov. 21:1)
  • Week 4: Pray that the church around the world, especially in countries where it is severely persecuted, would faithfully declare the glory and works of God. “Sing to the Lord, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples!” (1 Chron. 16:23–24)

We hope this prayer guide encourages you this year and in future years. Join us in praying fervently for a mighty movement of God’s Spirit today, thankful that He has graciously promised to hear us, and confident that He will answer our prayers according to His will.

Prayer for an Awakening unto God

in the Church and in America by Pastor Terri Copeland Pearsons

This is a call for believers in the Lord Jesus to come together to pray for an awakening unto God in America.

For corporate prayer to operate at its optimum, we must be focused on the same objectives, the same scriptures. We are already led by the same Holy Spirit! This is where the prayer of agreement shines its brightest. “If two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:19-20). More than once in our nation’s history, we have seen the move of the Holy Spirit sweep across the land. The first Great Awakening produced the Revolution that won America’s independence. We need another Awakening that will free our nation from the tyranny of sin and godlessness.

An awakening in the Church will result in an awakening in the nations. America belongs to the Church. She was set aside for the purpose of bringing the Gospel to the world. We are at the helm of this great ship. If the church is barely saved, how could the nation be anything different? As the Church goes, so goes the nation. Too many ministers have one or both feet in the world. As long as Christians will vote their own pocket book before voting to stop the killing of the unborn, there is idolatry in the camp. Nothing trumps righteousness. Not economics, not race, not gender, and certainly not any pleasure of the flesh that goes against the Word of God. What about those that are walking upright before Him already? His mercies are new every morning, so there is always something more to awaken to! He loves His Body and will be quick to move as we lift her to Him in faith.

Lord, we lift all the saints before You and intercede on their behalf. They are Your little ones whom You love so much. We pray for them, Lord, that they once again hear Your voice and obey. We pray that they would come into oneness in the faith and reach the full stature of Christ, Himself, edified and built up in love. We pray for a manifestation of the sons of God in the earth! We pray that the Bride of Christ be washed with the water of the Word and be ready for the coming of the Lord!

Now, Lord, we speak to The Church, the precious Body of Christ in the earth, and say “Wake, O Sleeper!” Get away from the dead, and Christ – the Anointed One – will make day dawn upon you and give you light. We believe you once again look carefully how you walk! Live purposefully, worthily and wise in the Lord! Awake to righteousness! Awake to holiness! Awake to Him Who died for you! Awake to Him Who ever lives for you! Awaken to the will of the Lord and no longer be drunk with wine; but be filled with the Holy Spirit! Be filled with the Word of God! Be filled with the Glory of the Lord! Saints, turn from all wicked ways, humble yourselves before the Lord, pray and return fully to your first Love. In Jesus’ Name!

As we pray in the Spirit today, Lord, may there a supply of the Spirit that strengthens every believer in their inner man by the Holy Spirit.

Everyone needs prayer, but there are many, maybe millions, who are without anyone to personally pray for them. Without our prayers, satan has too much freedom to drag their lives into darkness. While we have a few scriptures listed here, give the Holy Spirit time to work through you in a greater way by also yielding to Him and praying in other tongues. He knows exactly what words to supply your spirit that will give the Father an open door to move in many lives.

In the Name of Jesus, Father, we lift to You all of America. Our hearts are united with Yours on behalf of each and every one. Lord, while we lift them all, You see each one individually. We pray for an awakening in each life. We pray that the eyes of their understanding be enlightened to know You and the hope to which You have called them. Anyone who does not know You has been blinded but You are light. You said you would lead the blind in a way that they don’t know and make darkness into light before them. You said you will not leave them forsaken. We pray that as that light shines brightly in their lives, they won’t turn away from it. Like the early morning sun, shining through the window, Lord, awaken them to Your mercies! Stir them! Shake them! We pray they will have eyes to see and ears to hear. Send laborers across their path – people they will hear and who are anointed to speak into their lives. Let there be such a move of Your Spirit across this nation that even the most stubborn and hardest of hearts will melt in the presence of Your love. Awaken them to the reality of Your coming Lord Jesus! Use me now Lord as I pray in the Spirit for an awakening unto You . . .

A Prayer for Awakening Love
By Dr. James MacDonald

I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that you do not stir up or awaken love until it pleases (Song of Solomon 8:4).

Why does God insist on our being married before we can pursue intimate, sexual experiences with someone we love? Does marriage magically flip a switch that causes eros to go from being forbidden and wrong, to being encouraged and celebrated? (Eros is my preferred term for sex. It’s the Greek word describing the physical, affectionate, intimate relationship between a man and a woman.)

prayer for awakening

Most people’s plan for how to make their sexual decisions in life is . . . not to have a plan. When the opportunity arises, when the conditions are right, when the person seems special enough, it’ll just happen. Natural as breathing. But that’s not God’s plan. Eros has a right time and a righteous place.

So why does the context of eros matter so much?

1) Because God says so. Again and again in the Bible, we’re told this in words similar to these, “Sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints” (Ephesians 5:3). “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry” (Colossians 3:5). The only way for us to live in clear-conscience relationship with God is to let the authority of His Word be able to take us down. May He forgive us “every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God” (2 Corinthians 10:5). Simply let Him be Lord.

2) Because when God says, “Don’t,” He means, “Don’t hurt yourself.” I’ve made this statement countless times, but the expiration date on its truth never runs out. Choose to sin; choose to suffer. Stop thinking you’ll be the first person in human history to find an exception to this rule.

3) Because relationships built upside-down don’t last. Physical attraction can never support a lifetime of marriage. So when that’s where marriage starts—even before it starts—the structure will need to be torn down and rebuilt if it hopes to survive. The proper way to construct a marriage is by beginning with love for Christ, committing to live under the authority of His Word, and deciding to obey Him. Eros is the topping on the sundae of an awesome marriage, not the first layer that’s sure to melt away.

That’s why the Song of Solomon says not to “stir up or awaken love” until the time when eros can settle into its appropriate place, where it can function as a generator of pure love and blessing in marriage. To awaken it too soon will only cause it to get ahead of itself and to impose undue control and influence over you.

Lord, thank You for the precious, powerful gift of eros that You’ve given us to experience as married partners for life. What an incredible joy and blessing. Thank You, too, for helping make its benefits so beautiful by teaching us how to protect it. I ask You to place all my wants and desires under the authority of Your Word, and even where I struggle to desire Your way, help me to wantto want it. Please forgive me and grant healing for the ways I’ve defiled Your gifts. Thank You for being Healer and Redeemer. Make me an example of someone whose life testifies to the surpassing value of Your truth. I surrender to You afresh today, in the matchless name of Jesus. Amen.
