I carried an abundant supply of nerves and excitement with me as I walked cautiously out past the shore, avoiding stepping on any seashells. I held Catherine’s hand tight as we made our way to the spot where she would baptize me. I looked back at the shore and saw many people watching, some I didn’t even know. I turned to Catherine, and she reminded me why God sent Jesus and why He loves me. She asked me why I love Him, too. I told her He had changed my life, and I wanted to share it with the world. She dipped me down into the salty ocean, and I came up out of the water with an overwhelming feeling of love. Love from God and love for God. Cheers filled my ears as I walked back to the shoreline, but I thought, What now? What do I do after baptism?
So maybe you weren’t baptized in the ocean like I was. Maybe it was in a blow-up pool inside your local church. Or maybe you haven’t taken that next step just yet. That’s okay! Just because our stories are different doesn’t mean that our purpose is. The Bible clearly tells us that our next step after choosing to follow God is to get baptized. But what about after baptism? The Bible is filled with “next steps,” commandments, Scriptures, advice, and so many other life-giving words. It can be really hard—and really overwhelming—to try to figure it out on your own. So, I’ve created a list of things to do after baptism to help you out.
Three Things to Do After Baptism
- Seek God daily. The most important commandment God gives us is to love Him above anything else. When you love someone, you seek a relationship with them. Right? Whether that means a scheduled, daily quiet time before work, a new Bible Plan, or even constant prayers throughout the day just acknowledging Him. Seek God and a relationship with Him.
- Find community. Nothing is harder than trying to do life alone. Finding people to walk alongside you in life is key to staying on the right path. God created us as social people, no matter how introverted you are (trust me!). Your tribe is there to help you, sharpen you, and support you.
- Start serving. Whether it’s working with kids, being creative, or just being ridiculously good at making someone smile, God’s given you specific talents. And He wants to work through you. Serving changed my life so much that it put me on a different career path! Take your gift and get plugged in at your local church. God wants to use you! Serving has taught me so much about how uniquely God has created me.
See? It doesn’t seem as overwhelming when you break it down. After baptism, I began praying daily and reading the Bible all the time to nourish my relationship with God. It’s not perfect, and I’m not perfect, but God is. The more time I spend with Him, the more like Him I become. And sometimes I still begin to stray, which is why I’ve surrounded myself with amazing community. My friends are there to help redirect me and guide me when things get hard. Seek God, find community, start serving, and you’ll find new life.
