Catgroove is an Electroswing song that has been used as background music in many YouTube videos and GIF Sound Mashups. It is most known for being a catchy dance beat, and for its use in a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic video fad involving looping animations of characters’ eyes rolling. The video fad spread to other whimsical looping animations as well.
Origin
Catgroove was written by Austrian musician/DJ Parov Stelar, real name Marcus Füreder, regarded as the founder of the Electroswing genre. It first appeared on his Coco EP, published in 2009. At that time, it only received attention from his fans. On February 7, 2010, a simple video of Catgroove was uploaded to YouTube by user RobertJest1. It has since received over 1.6 million views as of March 4th, 2012, and became the primary reason for the song’s rise from relative obscurity.
Spread
On February 20, 2010, 13 days after RobertJest1’s upload, YouTube user takeSomeCrime uploaded a video of himself dancing to the song while wearing a suit and bowler hat. The video has since received over 7 million views.
On January 6, 2012, a Youtuber named “TwilightStocking” posted a video named “TwilightSparkle.mp4”. The video consisted of Twilight Sparkle, one of the characters of the popular show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic rolling her eyes while bobbing, the clip being used taken from the episode “Sonic Rainboom”. It didn’t spread until January 8, when another Youtuber by the name “NostalgiaSchmaltz” posted “Applejack.mp4” which featured Applejack instead of Twilight.
The video quickly gained hits after being posted to Equestria Daily, and now has 135 response videos. It started a fad of similar videos, initially of similar animations from other My Little Pony characters. Eventually it spread to other memes and subcultures.

As Catgroove’s notability as a dance beat grew, it started to see other forms of memetic usage. It is frequently used in Reddit’s GIF Sound Mashups, a form of mashup similar to YouTube Doubler in which an animated GIF is paired with the audio of a YouTube video. The song is mostly paired with GIFs of people dancing.
Search Interest
Searches for “catgroove” initially grew in mid-May 2010, a few months after the upload of the first two YouTube videos. The largest spike in searches was during late September to early October 2010.
