Christian Prayer: A Scriptural Model
A model for Christian prayer is found in the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus Christ himself gave all of us a pattern for prayer:
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen” (Matthew 6:9-13, KJV).
Christian Prayer: An Interpretation For All Of Us
The model for Christian prayer in Matthew 6 is known as the Lord’s Prayer. Many of us have recited this prayer for years, but have never truly meditated on its meaning. The following are spiritual snippets based on the Lord’s Prayer that can help deepen your prayer life with God:
“Our Father” – God wants us to approach Him as “Daddy” (Aramaic: Abba). He wants to take care of us and protect us. God desires intimacy. Remember, He has infinite love and grace. God wants us to be secure in His family as adopted children and heirs.
“Which Art in Heaven” — Look up to God. Fear Him and revere Him. He is all-powerful and can deal with all our problems, even the big ones. But He loves us so much that He doesn’t stay up there.
“Hallowed be Thy Name” — Holy, holy, holy. Approach God with awe and wonder. Save the word “awesome” for God. Live a life that honors Him.
“Thy Kingdom Come” – “Take this job and love it!” Working on behalf of God’s kingdom is the ultimate joy. Bloom where you’re planted. Do everything as unto the Lord. Find your gifts and use them. Be open to God’s leading each day.
“Thy Will Be Done” – God is the potter; we are the clay. God keeps us spinning on His potter’s wheel, shaping and reshaping us as He bathes our lives in tears to make us more Christ-like so He can use us for His will. Surrender daily. Keep your clay moist through daily prayer.
“On Earth as it is in Heaven” — Thy will be done – not my will be done!
“Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread” – Trust! God will provide for our needs. His eye is on the sparrow and I know He cares for me.
“Forgive Us Our Debts as We Forgive Our Debtors” — Forgiveness = Surrender. Don’t carry your own backpack – surrender it to Him. Revealing the feeling is the beginning of healing. Act as if you have forgiven and the feeling will follow. In our weakness, God sends His strength and peace.
“Lead Us Not Into Temptation” – Watch for unrecognized temptation. Pray, so you won’t fall. We are tempted every day. It deepens our walk and strengthens our faith – but be careful of spiritual blindness. Open my eyes, Lord, to my blind spots – use honest friends and family.
“Deliver Us From Evil” — The Evil One, Satan. We are saved from death to life. Jesus is more powerful than Satan – God is greater!
“For Thine Is the Kingdom (obedience), and the Power (confidence) and the Glory (joy), Forever” — This is our Father’s world. Everything we have is His. He is the ruler!

Catholic Prayers of Confession are very different from Christian Prayers. This particular Prayer of Confession is geared towards one of the Christian ways to pray.
God is close to those whose hearts are willing to turn back from sin and run to Him. He never gets tired forgiving His beloved and giving them another chance — a clean slate to begin once more. A Prayer of Confession is an essential part of getting your prayer answered.
If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
But God did listen!
He paid attention to my prayer.
Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer
or withdraw his unfailing love from me.
Many times, our hearts become calloused because of repetitive sins and we are deeply inundated by negative mindsets, attitudes, habits, addictions, and bondages. But, in our heart of hearts we long to break free from them permanently but fail to know how. God has engraved the natural law, His commandments, in our spirits and hearts and no matter how depraved or sinful we become, there is this inner prompting within telling us this is not the right way, traverse this other road.
God will relentlessly call us back to Him, no matter how far we have gone. If God is already prodding your heart right now, reminding you of any secret or hidden sin or disobedience, open your heart now to His voice saying, “My child, come back to me now. My arms are open to you. Repent and leave this sin and choose Me.”
You may now confess with your mouth whichever area God is bringing to your remembrance. Is there any thought, emotion, speech, action that violates God’s instructions in His Word? Is there any disobedience, or sin of omission (failing to do what should have been done) or any meditation of the heart that could have displeased God? Is there anyone or anything that displaced God in your life or took precedence over Him?
Here is how to pray to God. Let me pray for you now –
Our Abba Father, I pray for anyone reading this that you meet him or her at their deepest need. May Your Holy Spirit continue to minister to him and convict him of things that have been holding him back and drew him away from You. Go deeper, our God and search his mind, heart, spirit and his entire being for all traces of sin. Do a mighty cleansing over him right now. You said in Your Word, that if we confess our sins, You are faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9) Uproot those things that are unlike you God and do an overhaul—spirit, soul, and body. Cleanse his mind and eyes from any images and his ears from any ungodly sounds. May the Living Water wash away all the filth, uncleanness, and any perturbations in his soul. Affirm him of his identity in Christ and who You are in his life. Make him open to the work of the Cross, of Jesus’ sacrifice to save him from sin, sickness, and hell. Nourish him with the Word of God and give him a hunger for You, Your presence and Your Word. Cancel all the effects of his sins upon his life and his destiny. Thank You, Father God for this opportunity to pray with and for him. Seal everything that You have done today in his life. This we pray, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
If you have prayed this prayer, be assured that God has already begun His wonderful work in your life and He will bring it into completion. (Phil. 1:6) Our prayers to God are being heard in heaven. Do not be afraid of coming to God in prayer, He listens to you and will always be there for you. Meditate on Scriptures and declare them out loud daily, believe and act on them. When you are fully saturated on His Word, He will put His laws in your heart so that you might not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11). But if you fail, always seek Him and ask for forgiveness again and invite the Holy Spirit to empower you to say NO to sin and say YES to God. Remember that even as a saved individual we still sin as long as we are in this sinful fleshly body and therefore we do need to confess our sins. You can always return to this Prayer of Confession at anytime that you feel you need it.

Oh Wonderful and Heavenly Father, I come before you, asking that you heal me of all hatred against others. Fill me with Your love. Help me to learn how to love others as I would love myself and as you have loved me unconditionally.
You clearly demonstrated the love you have for me by sending your son to suffer an unimaginable death on that wooden cross. Lord, you love me more than I could ever understand. And, though mere sinners like me don’t deserve it, your undying love never fails. Oh the blood of the lamb that was shed, how it washes white as snow.
Psalm 136:26 Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever.
1 John 3:1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
Being a blessing to others
Lord give me peace, compassion and love in my heart so that I can be a blessing to others. Help me to be kindhearted, even when I don’t want to be. Teach me to show compassion, even when I think it’s not deserved.
Help me to demonstrate to others (my peers, families, friends, and especially my enemies), the kind of love you show me everyday. Dear God, let me find forgiveness for those who have wronged me. You are Alpha and Omega, the God of Love, and those that do not know you, do not know what love really is. I pray that they find their way back to you.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8 God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Prayer for the broken and depressed
Those who are hurting, lonely, depressed, broken-hearted, suffering from low self esteem and crying out, Father I ask that you be their comforter in this difficult time. Wrap your tender arms around them and let them feel your warmth and embrace .
I ask that you walk beside them. Guide them and show them your love. Help them to realize that they are never alone for you said you will never leave us or forsake us. Give them strength oh God, heal, touch and deliver them in Jesus name, Amen!
1 John 4:7-8 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
