Whether heading out on your daily commute, a business trip, vacation, or a visit with loved ones, it’s important to always pray before traveling to ask for God’s blessing and for spiritual protection—especially through the intercession of our Guardian Angels and St. Christopher, patron saint of travelers—against anything that may harm us. Below is a collection of prayers for safety while traveling, for ourselves and for those dear to us.
Grant me, O Lord, a steady hand and watchful eye, that no one shall be hurt as I pass by. Thou gavest life, I pray no act of mine may take away or mar that gift of Thine. Shelter those, dear Lord, who bear my company from the evils of fire and all calamity. Teach me to use my car for other’s need; nor miss through love of undue speed the beauty of the world; that thus I may with joy and courtesy go on my way. St. Christopher, holy patron of travelers, protect me, and lead me safely to my destiny. Amen.
O Almighty and merciful God, who hast commissioned Thy angels to guide and protect us, command them to be our assiduous companions from our setting out until our return; to clothe us with their invisible protection; to keep from us all danger of collision, of fire, of explosion, of fall and bruises, and finally, having preserved us from all evil, and especially from sin, to guide us to our heavenly home. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Each time I drive Lord, may I feel, Your hands on mine upon the wheel. Give me a careful, watchful eye, for young and old, when I drive by. Keep me from speeding needlessly, passing earth’s beauties heedlessly. I want to use this car for You, to drive my friends with safety too. But all these things can never be, unless O Lord, you drive with me. Amen.
In the name of God I go on this journey. May God the Father be with me, God the Son protect me, and God the Holy Ghost be by my side. Amen.
Lord, be our guide and our protector on the journey we are about to take. Watch over us. Protect us from accidents. Keep us free from harm to body and soul. Lord, support us with Your grace when we are tired. Help us be patient in any trouble which may come our way. Keep us always mindful of Your presence and love. Amen.
Dear Saint, you have inherited a beautiful name—Christopher—as a result of a wonderful legend that while carrying people across a raging stream you carried the Child Jesus. Teach us to be true Christbearers to those who do not know Him. Protect all drivers who often transport those who bear Christ within them. Amen.
ROMAN RITUAL BLESSING OF TRAVELERS
L: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
R: Who made heaven and earth.
Tobit 4:19a: At all times bless the Lord God, and ask him to make all your paths straight and to grant success to all your endeavors and plans.
John 14:6: Jesus said: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
L: All-powerful and ever-living God, when Abraham left his own land and departed from his own people, you kept him safe all through his journey. Protect us, who also are your servants: walk by our side to help us; be our companion and our strength on the road and our refuge in every adversity. Lead us, O Lord, so that we will reach our destination in safety and happily return to our homes. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
L: May God bless you with every heavenly blessing and give you a safe journey; wherever life leads you, may you may find him there to protect you. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
I often wondered if there’s a prayer suitable for setting off for a journey or adventure. As I am not English native speaker, I pray in my mother tongue, but people from all over the world travel for ages and it seems that our fears remain the same.
What you can find below is a compilation of a few prayers I found online. You can pray by saying one (or more) of them, or combine favorite parts of different prayers into your own, personal one, as I do. Everything is up to you 🙂

Prayer addressed to guardian angel
„My holy angel guardian, ask the Lord to bless the journey which I undertake, that it may profit the health of my soul and body; that I may reach its end; and that, returning safe and sound, I may find all at home in good health. Do thou guard, guide, and preserve us. Amen.„
Roman Catholic Prayer+
„O Almighty and merciful God, who has commissioned your angels to guide and protect us, may they be our companions from our setting out until our return. Clothe us with their invisible protection; keep from us all danger of collision, of fire, of explosion, of falling; and finally, having preserved us from all evil, and especially from sin, guide us to our heavenly home. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.„
Orthodox Christian Prayer+
„Be mindful, O Lord, of those who travel by land, by sea, and by air; of the old and young, the sick, the suffering, the sorrowing, the afflicted, the captives, the needy and the poor; and upon them all send forth Thy mercies, for Thou art the Giver of all good things. Amen.„
„O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: preserve those who travel; surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.„
Jewish Wayfarer’s Prayer
„May it be Your will, o Lord, our God and the God of our ancestors, that You lead us toward peace, guide our footsteps toward peace, and make us reach our desired destination for life, gladness, and peace. May You rescue us from the hand of every foe, ambush along the way, and from all manner of punishments that assemble to come to earth. May You send blessing in our handiwork, and grant us grace, kindness, and mercy in Your eyes and in the eyes of all who see us. May You hear the sound of our humble request because You are God Who hears prayer requests.
Blessed are You, our Lord, Who hears prayer. Amen.„

And may all the wishes you wish come true!”

Protection while traveling has long been one of the most popular types of spells to cast. With everything from St. Christopher’s charms hanging from our rear view mirrors to protective crystals in our pockets, witches might come across as awfully paranoid! But really, when you think about it, there are two kinds of physical protection spells one needs: protection of your home and personal space and protection while you are outside of the home.
We spend much of our modern lives in cars and planes, moving from one place to another. Whether traveling to the grocery store or across the continent, things don’t always go our way. Cars run out of gas, rolling luggage wheels break, purses and wallets get stolen and, now and again, cruise ships topple over in the Mediterranean. No, some burning herbs and charged crystals aren’t going to keep cruise ships from sinking, but a blessing spell certainly never hurts!
This spell is specifically intended for your luggage but you could also cast it on your vehicle.
Luggage Blessing Spell for Travel Protection
- One smoky quartz crystal, preferably charged at the full moon
- Dried comfrey
- Dried mint
- Place a heatproof bowl on the ground beside your open luggage. Sprinkle the dried herbs into it, or bind them into a smudge stick and place in the bowl. Light the herbs.
- Holding the smoky quartz in the palm of one hand, wave the smoke over the luggage and the crystal.
- If you wish, say a few words such as: May safe travels accompany this case wherever it may go.
- Zip the smoky quartz into a compartment of the luggage and enjoy safe travels!
I’m pretty excited because I’ll be taking a little trip of my own this coming weekend: a full moon retreat to the coast! Two and a half days of solitude, crashing waves, yoga and magick. I’ll be sharing how you can plan your own full moon retreat soon – stay tuned!
