Thank you God for the food we eat,
Thank you, God for the birds that sing,
Thank you, God, for everything!

I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
May God guard me through the night,
And wake me with the morning light.
Prayer #3
Hi, it’s me, just come to pray
And thank you for a fun-filled day!
You’ve been with me, so I know you’ve seen
All the great exciting things.

I know you love me, no matter what!
So help me rest and go to sleep
And feel the peace of your love for me.
Prayer #4
Dear God,
I’ve felt a bit sad today.
Sometimes people say things that upset me.
Sometimes I feel lonely at school.
Sometimes I feel misunderstood by my mum and dad.
Sometimes my feelings are all mixed up inside.
Please make me feel better.
Please make me sleep with good dreams.
Please make a happier day tomorrow.
Prayer #5
Father, We thank thee for the night,
And for the pleasant morning light;
For rest and food and loving care,
And all that makes the day so fair.
Help us to do the things we should,
To be to others kind and good;
In all we do, in work or play,
To grow more loving every day.
Prayer #6
Angels bless, and angels keep
Angels guard me while I sleep
Bless my heart and bless my home
Bless my spirit as I roam
Guide and guard me through the night
and wake me with the morning’s light.
Prayer #7
Lord in heaven, hear my prayer,
Keep me in your loving care.
Be my guide in all I do.
Bless all those who love me, too.

I speak my evening prayer;
Praise be to the being of life,
For his kindness and his goodness.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.
Prayer #10
God,
thank You for this day!
Thank You for the birds and the animals,
the flowers and the trees,
the lakes and the streams,
and the sun that rises and sets over them each day.
Thank You for creating everything we see!
Thank You for the life we live,
and for making each person different.
Thank You for Jesus,
who died for us so that we can go to heaven one day just for believing in Him.
What an amazing God You are! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Prayer #11
God, Thank You for my friend.
You tell us that it is not good to be alone,
God, and bless us with family and friends all around us.
Thank You for giving us people to talk to and laugh with.
I pray for my friend today,
that they have a good day and a blessed life.
They are a blessing to me, God,
when I need them the most.
Just like Jesus is to me.
Help me to be kind like Jesus.
To be a good friend to others and spread His love.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen
Prayer #12
God, Thank You for my Mom.
She helps me grow into the person You made me to be.
Even though I don’t always listen,
I love her everyday… all of the time.
Just like You love us.
She loves me even when I have good days,
and when I’m bad.
Help me to be obedient,
even when she tells me to do something I don’t want to do.
Thank You for my mom.
Bless her to know how much I love her.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Prayer #13
God, Thank You for my Dad.
He guides me in life by his example and his helping hand.
He teaches me how to do things and helps me with my homework.
He works hard at his job for our family, and makes me laugh.
Thank You so much for my dad.
Please bless him, God and let him know how much I love him.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Being a parent can drive you to pray often, for yourself and your child.
You know your precious toddler is a gift from God and you only want the best for him. You know he will make mistakes along the way and face challenges in his life, so you feel a strong desire to pray for him. You find that need especially strong when he gets on your last nerve or when he’s sick. The time you spend on your knees for him is worth every minute as you place him in God’s loving hands.

- Take time to get still before God. Quiet your heart and release the problems of the day. Don’t be surprised of your darling toddler interrupts your prayer time, unless you pray while he’s asleep. If he does come to you, invite him to stay and pray with you. There is nothing wrong with him knowing that you pray for him on a regular basis.
- Address God with an attitude of gratitude. Acknowledge this child as a blessing in your life and thank God for the privilege of being his parent. Ask for God’s wisdom and guidance to be the best parent you can be so he can grow up to meet his full potential.
- List the specific concerns you have for your toddler. Ask God to help him grow strong and wise in the ways of the Lord. Pray that God will guard his mind and heart against the evil in the world and the things that tempt him to do what he knows is wrong. Petition God to protect him from those who would hurt him or lead him down the wrong paths.
- Pray for his teachers and others who touch his life. Ask that they also be led by God so they offer healthy examples and capable leadership in his life. Thank God for each of these individuals and ask God to bless them so they can bless your toddler.
- Ask for any needs your family has that will impact your child. For example, you might pray for more patience with him or the provisions you need to meet all of his needs. Thank God for all of the blessings you already have and for the wisdom to be good stewards with those blessings.
- Close your prayer with a heart-felt “Amen” and the knowledge that God hears you when you pray. If your toddler joined you during your prayer time, ask him if wants to talk to God, too, and let him offer any prayers he wants, no matter how silly or simple. Don’t rush him. He needs to know that God listens to his prayers just like he listens to yours.
- Tell your toddler to fold her hands together and bow her head. Have her repeat after you, “Dear God, thank you for this day.”
- Tell her to say, “God, I’m thankful for...” She should list the things and people she is thankful for, such as “Mommy and Daddy, my dog, my teacher…” This may take a while, as she will likely not want to forget anyone or anything important.
- Suggest that she tell God anything that she wants or needs. If her needs are small and minor compared to yours, let her continue with her list without laughing, even if she asks God for things you find amusing. God doesn’t mind.
- Prompt her to finish by saying, “Thank you, God, for taking care of me. Amen.” Praise her efforts and repeat frequently until she doesn’t need your prompting to pray.

These five words can help teach your toddler what the Catholic faith is all about. Plus, a five-word prayer for bedtime.
Toddler Prayer
Teaching a toddler to pray can be difficult when we are so used to using words for prayer. By one year old, they may have the ability to imitate a few words and understand what they mean. By two, some can string along a simple sentence. This can also make it hard to teach our young children the beauty of the Catholic faith.
The five words that follow can help teach your child the fundamentals of the faith and form the basis of a simple prayer your child can say before bed every night.
Five Simple Words
Jesus: Jesus is the person at the center of our faith, and to whom your child may find it easiest to pray. When your child knows the word Jesus, they can learn all that he stands for—redemption, forgiveness, love, sacrifice, heaven—without being able to say the words. It also gives them someone tangible to pray to.
God: Not only is God relatively easy for most toddlers to say, but it’s the second piece of the puzzle in understanding who God is. Perhaps the most valuable reason for your child to learn the word God is because he is Jesus’ father—a relationship that most children readily understand. Knowing the relationship between God and Jesus opens up a whole new dynamic of our faith.
Love: Love is the most important theme of our faith. It is the motivation for Christ’s sacrifice, the basis for our morality, and why God created us. Love permeates every moment of our existence. By learning the word love, your toddler will not only be able to communicate their love for you, but can start to understand the great love that God has for them.
Sorry: Forgiveness and repentance are necessary for a world in which we continually hurt God and hurt each other. Learning sorry will not only help your child apologize to others, but will help them have a right attitude toward sin—rather than ignoring it or justifying it, your child can learn from an early age that they should apologize for their transgressions. This can also help even a toddler say a simple act of contrition: “Jesus, I’m sorry.”
Amen: Amen is a versatile word and fun to say. Have your kids shout it excitedly! It means many things, but is always a passionate affirmation of belief. When your child can say Amen, you have a way get them excited about praying, and since it ends nearly every prayer, its a way they can participate without knowing a lot of words.
Bedtime Prayer
Getting in a routine of saying bedtime prayers can help sustain your child’s prayer life as they grow older. When they’re young, you may have them kneel next to you and follow along as you pray. Once they can say a few words, though, try saying this simple prayer:
“Jesus, I love you. Amen.”
It is simple, but it says all a little one needs to say. With just these five words, your toddler can start cultivating a life of prayer and a relationship with Jesus.
What words does your toddler know to help her pray? What prayers do you say before bed?
